Luck of the Irish Gets Lucky, Finishes in Fine Fashion … and Weather at PDunes

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) -- The rain went away. The wind settled down. Now so can everyone else and then enjoy the St. Patrick's Day parades in Savannah and here. A kit full of three-setters highlighted today's semifinals and finals of the 25^th annual Luck of the Irish Doubles at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center.

The finalists earned their "luck" with hard playing on court. Moss Creek Head Pro and tournament competitor Scott Christensen took his luck on the sideline, winning the top door prize donated by one of the sponsors – Adventure Radio Group -- a trip to either Gatlinburg TN or Panama City FL. Have a ball, Scott and Nancy.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) -- There are only two kinds of tennis courts, Tournament Director Jackie Reynecke can tell you. There is wet; then there is dry. Take dry any day. And take it they did, the remnants of 191 players who traded the Friday night drippings for early today bluster ... but dry … as the Luck of the Irish Doubles headed toward semifinals and finals Sunday at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center.

Schedule backup necessitated going to the beloved 10-point super tiebreaks for third sets. Courts were full from early morning until well into the night.

Game over. Carolina wins. No other results reported. Goodbye Eastern Standard Time. Good riddance.

From Texas to Minnesota to New England: Spring Break College Teams Here This Week

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Six singles and three doubles per team match means 1,179 individual matches this week as Spring Break Tennis 2008 swings into its third week. With all matches open free to spectators, SBT also will play a doubles exhibition Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center.

Considering the number of matches schedule, you'll find college action on most any hard court complex around the island and nearby. The men's and women's teams represent schools from NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA and Junior College.

'Luck of the Irish' Blue Over Weather; Rescheduled Matches for Saturday & Sunday

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) -- The only luck showing for the Luck of the Irish Doubles today was bad, as Tournament Director Jackie Reynecke, Tennis Director John Kerr and crew scrambled schedules to cope with wet weather that was welcomed in some aspects but not by this weekend's organizers or players.

This is the 4 p.m. whether advisory from TD Reynecke:

"Got one 3 pm match out and have some of the original scheduled 5:00’s and later scheduled matches going on if the weather holds. I have my fingers crossed. All other matches have been rescheduled to tomorrow with new times and players should call into the tennis center by 6 pm tonight. Pro shop opens at 7:30 am Saturday with matches starting at 8 am."

TENNIS E-News is going with this edition now and will be catching up with any results in Saturday's issue.

State Recruiting Other Areas

Super Senior 75s in the Headlines Again … This Time Beyond TAHHI & CCTA Areas

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The Super Senior 75s & Older league program, begun on HHIsland like other Super Senior formats, got a boost to spread statewide, at least, in a weekend USTA South Carolina league coordinators workshop in Columbia.

The 75s pilot program had a very successful start here last fall with Men's 3.0 and 3.5 teams. Expansion of that program to include a Women's 75 league is on track for this fall. Coordinators Don Grider and Mary Ellen Arboe already are spreading the word for the late '08 season that will include HHI league teams and those from the new Coastal Carolina Tennis Association in one league. I.E., not a split. A 75s division is likely to be included in the November Super Senior Championships on Isle of Palms.

Junior Team Tennis Spring/Summer Planning Gets Under Way

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) --Junior Team Tennis '08, administered by Public Tennis Inc., will open registration May 1 (through June 1) for the Spring/Summer League with matches to begin in late May. JTT is a USTA program in which kids ages 6-18 can compete in a team format featuring boys/girls singles and doubles as well as mixed doubles.

The Fall '07 season had a record number of teams, rostering 145 Beaufort County kids by opening up new play divisions such as 12-and-Under Beginner and 14-and-Under Intermediate. Two local teams from this past season as well as the winners of this coming season, assuming they are different teams, will represent our area at the State Championships in July in Sumter. Winning there leads to a Regional and National Championship.

The Spring season is timed between the boys high school season, school end and before the high school girls season, offering a chance to prepare for tournament play as well as high school JV/varsity even college playing. If the response level is high for 6- to 10-year-old beginners, the USTA Quick Start (modified equipment and court size) will be incorporated in JTT.

USTA Membership is required (special junior rate) and a team fee of about $50 includes matches, practice session, balls, refreshments, a year-ending party and a team tee shirt. JTT has featured teams from Hilton Head Island, Beaufort and Bluffton and with coaches including Dan Santorum, Scott Nichols, Patrick Mason, several pros from Palmetto Dunes and Local League Coordinator Robert Brown. ”We hope to see our numbers even higher by adding new teams plus a new division 14-and-Under Beginners," Brown said. "We don’t want to turn any child away”.

Van der Meer Open -- Stokke Takes Men's; Wong Battles to Women's Title

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) -- Top seed Jonathan Stokke won in straight sets, but #1 Keri Wong had to fight through a marathon three-setter in today's finals of the Van der Meer Open. The tournament drew 60 players representing more than 15 countries at VdM Tennis Center

Stokke defeated #3 Christophe Bonadona 6-4, 6-2 in the men's final. Wong took on #2 Maria Brito and the two battled through a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(8) final.

The tournament players ranged from age 14 through 50s and included local academy level juniors, teaching professionals, local adults and players currently playing the professional satellite tours in the United States and internationally. It was the first of three Open events to be held by Van der Meer in 2008 and was highlighted by singles and doubles finals featuring teaching professionals for Van der Meer Tennis Center and Sea Pines Racquet Club.

Van der Meer will next host top 12-14-year-olds from around the Southeast in the Bullfrog USTA Sectional Designated Event Apr. 26-28. For more Information, contact VdM Director of Events Justyn Schelver at 785-8388 ext 119.

Crosby Wins Singles & Doubles in Fripp Spring Clay Courts

FRIPP ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) -- Greg Crosby of Beaufort won Men's 4.0 singles and, teamed with William Dalton, took the 4.0 doubles in today's finals of the Spring Clay Court Championships at Fripp Island Racquet Club. The USTA-sanctioned event with 132 players was littered throughout with high-scoring third-set super tiebreaks -- especially in doubles.

Fripp, under Tournament Director Troy McMullen, also will host a Fall Clay Court Championships Sept. 26-28.

HHI Junior Heading to Russia as U.S. Federation Cup Practice Partner

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Alison Riske, a 17-year-old from Pittsburgh PA and currently residing on Hilton Head Island, was selected as a practice partner of the U.S. Federation Cup team against Russia Apr. 26-27 in Moscow. Riske will join the team with Lindsey Davenport and the others to be announced.

Riske has been ranked #1 in the Girls' 18s USTA national rankings this past year and reached the finals of the USTA Girls' 18s National Hard Court Championships. She has wins over players in the top #150 WTA and reached the second round of the US Open qualifying in 2007.

Standings in USTA League Senior Divisions

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Losing all three first sets then coming back to win all three second and third sets pretty much appears to be the best tale of the week in USTA League Seniors. That's especially so when it was the unbeaten Palmetto Dunes Wannabees who did the return from the nearly departed.

The Wannabees remain in a tie with Sun City Nationals for Men's 3.5 Flight II top spot. Those two teams won't meet until the last week in the season.
