Opponents Set To Determine Seeding for Senior States in Men's 3.0, 3.5

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Somebody better check what the Sun City Court Jesters are doing for breakfast. Finishing #3 in the Senior Men's 3.0 Flight I, the Jesters won Monday and today in playoffs to determine teams and seeding for USTA League South Carolina State Senior Championships that will be played here May 10-12.

Now, check how they beat #2 Country Club of Hilton Head Monday and #1 Sea Pines Cardinals today: Two 2-1 team matches in which all four Jester court wins were three-setters. Like this one: Peter Dirugeris/Robert Perrone won 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 in Monday's deciding match. Or this today: Dirugeris/Alex Tan won 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 and Dale Dremann/Rogers Flanigan won 2-6, 6-4, 7-6. Not bad for a #3 regular-season finisher. What's in them Wheaties?

Meanwhile, the Long Cove Runners were just rolling through, knocking off #3 Sun City Challengers and #1 Shipyard Rockets, albeit in not so stunning a fashion. Runners vs. Jesters Monday for #1 and #2 seeding at States.

In Senior 3.5 Men's, things were going pretty much according to form. Respective flight undefeated #1 teams Palmetto Dunes Wannabees and Indigo Run Golden Bear Claws won today's playoff semifinals and will meet next Wednesday to determine which has #1 seeding at States. Dataw and Sea Pines Cardinals will play for #3 and #4.

Some 1,000 SC seniors will be competing in the state championships on 2.5 through 4.5 levels, with winners and a couple wildcards advancing to the Southern Championships July 19-27 in Mobile AL.

BillyBob Doubles Next Up on HHI Tournament ‘Tour’ -- Deadline Monday the 21st

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – It’s the 24^th annual BillyBob Century Cup Doubles Apr. 25-27 and it will have a slight tweeking of the 120s division this year at South Beach Racquet Club. Also, unlike recent years, tournament play will begin Friday unless there’s an exceptionally large draw in a category,

Men’s, women’s and mixed doubles will be in combined ages 80, 100, 120, 140 and 150, with age as of Dec. 31, 2008, in effect. Rating restrictions also apply. There are two 80s divisions – Open and 4.0 & below. It’s 4.5 & below for the 100s, 4.0 & below for 120s and 3.5s & below for 140s and 150s. The 120s rating level is a change from last year.

The $40 per player entry for one event and $50 for two includes an embroidered Salty Dog/BillyBob collared shirt, party/dinner at the Salty Dog Friday and a minimum two matches per event. Entry deadline is Monday the 21^st. Entry form with copy of entry check can be faxed to 363-2953.

Stephens, McAbee, Itkor Take Adult Singles Titles

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The guys wrapped it up in a hurry, but the gals, well, a third-set match tiebreak had to settle the final in today's action of the David M. Carmines Memorial Tennis Championships at Van der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club.

Islander's Anneliza Itkor and Cindy Knight split the first two sets in the Women's 3.5 final, with Itkor coming through in the match tiebreak 10-8. Harold Stephens lost just six games in two weekend matches, taking a 6-1, 6-2 win over Brian Casey in the Men's 3.5 final. Wiliam McAbee lost one game in the quarterfinals, got a walkover in the semis and ran the table 6-0, 6-0 in the Men's 4.0 title match over Bob Awrey.

The afternoon doubles finished the tournament that benefits the medical research in the name of the young HHIslander who lost his life to cancer. Island Rec Center also was a beneficiary. Tom Jilly was tournament director; Sandra Morrissette was tournament referee.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Brent Lett, Sam Trimble and Lindsey Burke each won singles and doubles titles in a very busy finals day in the Carmines Memorial Tennis Championships at Chaplin Public Tennis Center. It was a record draw with almost double the number of entries as last year.

Lett and Trimble won their respective singles divisions -- 14s and 12s -- then teamed to win the 14s doubles. Burke captured the 16s singles, then teamed with Kendal Drake for the doubles title in that division.

Main Draw Starts Monday

Wheelchair Tennis Exhibition, Clinic at Family Circle USTA Day Wednesday

DANIEL ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Family Circle Cup, with main draw matches beginning Monday, will have a wheelchair tennis exhibition and clinic on Wednesday, which also is USTA Member Appreciation Day.

Hilton Head Island’s Julie Jilly of the Professional Tennis Registry will emcee the event with PTR South Carolina’s Bob Masella and Dave Rogers as wheelchair players in a one-up, one-down exhibition at 3 p.m., followed by a drill clinic. The SC players are top-ranked nationally. During the clinic, anyone can try out the special tennis wheelchairs.

USTA members get a $10 discount on tickets that day and can attend a free reception from 1:30 to 3 p.m. by showing the USTA card. Kids’ Day court activities will run from 4 to 5 p.m.

Jelena Jankovic is #1 seed for the championships and Bausch & Lomb (Amelia Is.) champion Maria Sharapova is #2, with Anna Chakvetadze #3, Elena Dementieva #4, Serena Williams #5, Marion Bartoli #6, Patty Schnyder #7 and Dinara Safina #8. Williams is scheduled to play the first night match of the tournament on Tuesday.

3.0, 3.5 Senior Women's Playoffs Set To Decide Teams, Seeding for State Championships

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – USTA League Senior Women's 3.0s and 3.5s will play off Apr. 22 and 23 to determine the HHIsland lineup of teams and seeding in the South Carolina State Senior Championships that will be played here May 10-12.

On Tuesday the 22^nd, the 3.0s will have the Dataw Darlins hosting Beaufort Low Country Lobsters to determine HHI #1 and #2 seeds for States. Competing for HHI’s third team at States will be the SC Yacht Hotsie Yachtsies at PD Dynamic Duos. Both matches are at 2 p.m.

The 3.5 women will play Wednesday the 23^rd, with Spring Lake Roaring Rackets playing host to Port Royal Glory Girls for HHI’s first and second place and Sun City Swingers will meet SCYacht Nauti-Gals for third and fourth.

Carmines Memorial Championships:

ADULTS: 20-18 Tiebreak Highlight of the Day; Finals Set Sunday

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Well, it might not be the closest match of the tournament, but a 20-18 "10-point" match tiebreak has to be the Set of the Tournament at the David M. Carmines Memorial Tennis Championships. The USTA-sanctioned adult tournament has a couple semifinals and all the finals set up for Sunday, with 3.0 and 3.5s at Van der Meer Shipyard and 4.0s at Chaplin Public Tennis Center.

The Women's 3.5 top seed Anneliza Itkor/Cindy Knight lost a first set 6-2 to Angele Byrne/Gloria Carmines, but came back 6-2 in the second. It was the seesaw 20-18 tiebreak that gave the top seed the victory to advance to Sunday finals.

The tournament is a benefit for cancer research in memory of the young Hilton Head Islander who lost his life to that disease several years ago.

JUNIORS: Semifinals Early then Finals in Singles & Doubles at Chaplin

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The Carmines Memorial Junior Championship entries jumped from 63 last year to 116 this time around and quality of the tennis has taken a quantum leap as well. Boys and girls got the long quarterfinal rounds wrapped up today and start early morning on singles semifinals. Singles and doubles finals to follow in what will be another busy day for Tournament Director Tom Jilly, Referee Sandra Morrissette and their many volunteers.

Carmines Adult, Senior Championships Off & Hitting With Record Turnout

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – With a record 180 players in the combined draws, play got under way today in the David M. Carmines Memorial Tennis Championships at Chaplin Public Tennis Center. Junior and Adult divisions are being played in the event benefitting cancer research in memory of the young Hilton Head Islander who lost his life to that disease several years ago.

Juniors got action started this evening, while players of all age and rating divisions enjoyed a tournament party provided by Hudson's Seafood. A full day of tennis is set for Saturday, playing at Chaplin, Hilton Head Island High School and Van der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club. Finals are set for Sunday in adults and juniors.

HHI League Teams Get 3 Wildcard Spots for Senior State Championships

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Senior Men's 3.0 and 3.5 this week got their paths cleared somewhat to making it to the USTA League South Carolina State Senior Championships that will be played on Hilton Head Island May 10-12. Those divisions plus Women's 4.0 have been allotted wildcards, meaning that four HHI league teams will advance in Men's 3.0 and 3.5. Also, two will go in Women's 4.0.

The wildcard word arrived as four Men's 3.5 teams faced off Wednesday for what they thought was Step 1 in deciding which three teams would advance to States. Dataw Islanders and Sea Pines Cardinals were winners. Flight II, #3 Dataw leveled Flight I, #2 Sun City Spin Doctors 3-0; Flight II, #2 Cardinals won 2-1 over Flight I, #3 Spring Lake The Ultimates.

Dataw and Sea Pines and the flight #1 teams -- Palmetto Dunes Wannabees and Indigo Run Golden Bear Claws -- will spend the next two Wednesday playing for HHI team seeding at States. The Men's 3.0 playoffs begin Monday with two matches to decide the two teams that will join the divisions four-pack advancing to States.

Three teams are in the running for the two Women's 4.0 slots from HHI with one deciding remaining, and that's on Monday the 21^st. The Indigo Run Racquettes, currently in a first place tie at 7-2 with Sun City Sunsationals, will face #3 Colleton River Herricanes, who are sporting a 6-3 record. The first Indigo Run-Colleton match went 3-0 for the Racquettes. Sun City plays the 2-7 Spring Lake Racqueteers on the 21^st.

Some 1,000 SC seniors will be competing in the state championships on 2.5 through 4.5 levels, with winners and a couple wildcards advancing to the Southern Championships July 19-27 in Mobile AL.

USTA League 3.5 Men’s 1^st Round Set Wednesday; 3.0 Men Go at It on Monday

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Playdown will begin tomorrow for the three HHI 3.5 and 3.0 each spots in next month’s USTA League South Carolina State Senior Championships that will be played for the fourth straight year on Hilton Head Island. About 1,000 SC seniors will be competing on 2.5 through 4.5 levels.

The HHI Senior Men’s 3.0s and 3.5s each will follow the same playoff format. First off, the #2 team in Flight I hosts #3 team in Flight II and #2 of Flight II hosts #3 of Flight I. Teams that finished first in each category have byes the first round. The senior women are wrapping up their regularly scheduled season this week. Here is the men's playoff schedule:

Inaugural Beaufort Academy Event

Rising Stars Will Be Shining Next Month -- Sanctioned Tournament for Novice Juniors

BEAUFORT SC (TENNIS E-News) – Beaufort Academy is stepping out with its first novice junior tournament -- a USTA-sanctioned one -- the "Rising Stars at Beaufort Academy" to be played Saturday, May 17.

Entry is for boys' and girls' singles in age divisions of 8 through 16 with play in a round robin format to provide extra play. Players with higher point rankings are not eligible.

Entry fee is $20 plus a $3 TennisLink fee and includes a T-shirt and lunch. Entry deadline is May 11. To enter online, go to http://www.sctennis.com then select TennisLink, then Tournaments and use Tournament ID #704123008. USTA membership is required to play.

Adult & Junior Event for Cancer Benefit

Deadline Monday Midnight for Carmines Championships That Will Begin Friday

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- You have another day or so to enter the 4^th annual David M. Carmines Memorial Tennis Championships that will be played next weekend to benefit the American Cancer Society, M.D. Anderson Cancer Research Center and the Island Recreation Scholarship Fund.

Deadline is 'Monday at 11:59 p.m." as is noted in online entry information. Not to worry. You won't be punished if you got your registration in by today -- the inaccurate deadline noted in the printed tournament brochure.

The USTA-sanctioned tournament includes men's and women's singles and doubles, as well as mixed doubles, and junior boys' and girls' singles and doubles. Open and rated adult divisions include 3.0 and 3.5 on clay courts and 4.0, 4.5 and Open on hard. All junior age divisions – 10s through 18s – will be played on hard courts.

Hudson’s Seafood will host a pre-tournament party Friday the 11^th at 6 p.m. Door prizes will be awarded. In its first three years, the tournament has raised more than $5,000 for cancer research and Island Rec programs.

Entry fee is $40 for singles and $25 per player for doubles, with a limit of two events. Entry forms are available at HHI clubs. Brady Plants a Couple Seeds To Win SC Hard Court Singles Championship; Child Finalist

LEXINGTON SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- Steve Brady of Bluffton had a couple seeded players standing in his way. Not a problem. He knocked off the #2 seed in the semifinals this morning, then the #1 in the afternoon finals of the SC Sr. Hard Court Closed Championships in Lexington.

The championships established what we think is a record -- and an ominous one. It had 59 men entered and 0 women … as in zero … as in NO WOMEN. A state championships with no women. Someone is saying something. Is anyone listening?

After rain washed out all Saturday play, Brady defeated (2) Raymond Frazier of Greenville 6-3, 6-2 in the Men's 50s semifinal. He then took care of top-seeded Jim Hinson of Columbia 3-6, 6-4, 11-9 for the championships. (Isn't it great to know the actual tiebreak score rather than "1-0" in USTA League results?!?)

The bad-seed day didn't work so well for Hilton Head Islander and #1 seed Pat Child in the 55s. He defeated #4 Cliff Netzler of Rock Hill 6-4, 6-4 in the semis, but dropped the final to #2 Andrew Steingold of Mount Pleasant 7-6(5), 1-6, 10-3 (Isn't it great to know the actual tiebreak score rather than "1-0" in USTA League results?!?)

Not that that was all the action. Between singles semifinals and finals, top-seeded Brady and Child teamed to win a 50s doubles semifinal 6-4, 4-6, 13-11* over Clifton Parker (Lexington)/Will Warlick (Irmo) and finished the day with a 6-3, 6-0 championship win over #2 seed Doug Deaderick (Lexington)/Paul Owens (Irmo).

The Men's 75 singles had only two entrants and both from Sun City. Bob Koenig defeated Ernie Clark 6-2, 6-4 for that championship prize money.

Sharapova Added to draw at Bausch & Lomb

AMELIA ISLAND FL (TENNIS E-News) -- That screeching noise you heard today may have been Maria Sharapova on her way to the Bausch & Lomb Championships -- a late entry for the women's pro tour event that opens Monday with 17 main-draw singles matches. That puts Sharapova into consecutive weeks of play just off I-95, sort of. She earlier entered the 35^th annual Family Circle Cup set for next week on Daniel Island, Charleston.

Also in the draw with Sharapova as #1 seed are Anna Chakvetadze, Venus Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Marion Bartoli, Patty Schnyder, Amelie Mauresmo and Daniela Hantuchova, among others.
