It's Indigo Run vs. Port Royal for Adult Women's 3.5 Championship

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Indigo Run Volley Girls won three straight-setters in their schedule-ending match to edge Long Cove Longcovettes in the USTA League Adult Women's 3.5 Flight II standings. The Volley Girls will play Flight I #1 Port Royal Tough Cookies Saturday the 17^th to determine champion to advance to South Carolina Adult State Championships in Greenville.

Senior States Set for Early Start This Weekend; 27 HHI League Teams in the Draws

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Spring Break for college tennis on HHI has been gone a month. This weekend is SENIOR Spring Break when some 1,000 players roll in for the USTA League South Carolina State Championships that this year will start a day early.

We counted 27 HHI league teams in the draws ranging from Men's and Women's 2.5 through 4.5. Normally a Saturday- Sunday-Monday event, the 2008 edition will begin with some matches Friday, and HHI teams will be competing then.

For the most part, teams will play round robins within groups in each category Saturday and Sunday. Group winners will advance to semifinals and finals Monday. Champions will advance to Southern Championships in July.

"For the most part" does not include the Men's 2.5s. Again, no Men's 2.5s have appeared from outside the HHI league area. Only two Women's 2.5 teams are entered and, guess what, those are from the HHI league. The dust is still settling on the Men's playoffs, so we'll save that for the next issue.

HHI Area Players Finalists in Southern Senior Hardcourt Open Championships in Augusta

AUGUSTA GA (TENNIS E-News) -- Championship is best, but finalist ain't chopped liver, especially when it’s the Southern Senior Hardcourt Open. Playing last weekend, two Hilton Head Island area players lost in the finals and two doubles teams did likewise.

In Men's 50 Singles, #4 seed Steve Brady of Bluffton defeated #2 James Woody of Powder Springs GA 6-1, 7-5, but then lost in the final to #1 Jonathan Hart of Atlanta 6-4; 6-2. HHI's Hank Iannuzzi placed third in the Men's 65s, losing to topseed Jim Lazenby of Birmingham AL in the semifinals 6-3, 7-6 (2) and getting the 3^rd place by virtue of a walkover.

In Men's 75 Singles, #2 Bob Wiederhorn of Bluffton defeated #4 Herman Thrash of Birmingham 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, but seedings held in the final as #1 Richard Lawson of Trussville AL defeated Wiederhorn 7-6(2), 6-0. In the consolation final, Richard Stennett of Fletcher NC defeated Bob Koenig of Bluffton 6-4; 6-3.

The #2-seeded Iannuzzi and Bryce Young of HHI took the top seeds Jerry McEwen of Memphis TN and Hugh Thomson of Alpharetta GA to the limit, losing in the final 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Thomson has held the world's #1 ranking in his age division.

In Men's 75 Doubles, second-seeded Koenig and Joe Roberts of Greenville SC lost to #1 Marvin Buchanan of Birmingham/Lawson 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.

(TENNIS E-News) -- The 9^th annual tennisresortsonline.com worldwide listings based solely on vacationer opinions is out and HHI's Palmetto Dunes Resort is #9 and Port Royal Racquet Club is #22 among the Top 25 classified as Gold Medal resorts. Kiawah Island Resort is #3 on the listing and Wild Dunes Resort is #24.

Vacationer reviews determine the ratings and are based on lodging, restaurants, kids' programs, dollar value, among other things.

Silver Medal resorts -- those ranked 26 to 50 -- are listed alphabetically and include Inn at Palmetto Bluff, Sea Pines Resort, South Beach Racquet Club and Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort. Shipyard Plantation is a Bronze Medalist, among those ranked 51-75.

Among worldwide tennis camps, Litchfield at #16 and Van der Meer Tennis at #19 are the only South Carolina listings.

Champions Galore at the Junior Banana Challenge; Friends of the Children Big Winner

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Thomas Clement of France and Trey Hale of USA battled through three long sets today in the 1^st annual Junior Banana International Davis Cup before the Paris junior came out on top in a third-set tiebreak 6-3; 4-6; 7-6 (12-10) for the Boys' 18s championship.

Okay, so we embellished the title a bit. And we're more likely to have a player from Paris KY than France. But it was pretty exciting nonetheless at the 2^nd annual Junior Banana Challenge finals at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center. Hale can't feel all that badly in that he won the Boys' 16s championship of the Tournament Division.

Sam Trimble should be a pretty happy dude too, having won the Boys' 12s and 14s. His 12s win came today over Merritt Wilburn 6-3, 6-3. Yesterday, the two met in the 14s round robin and Trimble won 6-4, 5-7, 10-0.

Under the tournament format set up by Director Jackie Reynecke, novice juniors played 8-game pro sets with a 7-point tie-break if tied at 7-all; tournament level play two sets with a 10-point super tiebreak if split.

The second annual event was presented by Dr. James Gigante and Friends of the Children to support research at the Charles Darby Research Center in Charleston. Proceeds from entry fees, drawings and a silent auction all go to the center.

Bluffton Today Open Ready To Go May 16-18; Junior and Adult Divisions, Special Events

BLUFFTON SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Except for a speed bump called the SC Senior State Championships, next up on the local tournament scene is the 3^rd annual Bluffton Today Open Tennis Tournament May 16-18 with Bluffton High School courts as its base site.

Men's, women's and mixed doubles will be played in combined ratings of 5.0, 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0 levels. Junior singles will go on in boys’ and girls’ 12 and under and 16 and under. Tournament Director Bob Brown will have a number of side events all weekend, including a silent auction and new Beat-the-Pro competition. For information, call Brown at 290-2833. Junior Banana Challenge All Set for Finals Sunday at Palmetto Dunes

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Stoked by Friday night's pastafest by Carrabba's Italian Grill, young players from the HHI area and a few visitors rolled through the first two days of the Junior Banana Challenge at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center. Finals are set for Sunday morning.

The second annual event is presented by Dr. James Gigante and Friends of the Children to support research at the Charles Darby Research Center in Charleston. Proceeds from entry fees, drawings and a silent auction all go to the center.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The Super Senior Combo League deadline is closing fast, with coordinator Kathy Foulke looking for a few good captains and some definite word on teams. Play is for 60 & older.

"I have one 6.5 men's team and two 7.5 men's teams," she said, including "nibbles" from a few others in 6.5s. Five 6.5 teams are set, together with three 7.5 women's teams. Play begins May 13.
