Teams in Men’s 70 Final

HHI’s Killer Bees Win Women’s 3.5 Super Senior 70 State Championship at Wild Dunes

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – The Port Royal Killer Bees put the final touches on their championship run today, capturing the 70s Women’s 3.5 title at the South Carolina Super Senior State Championships at Wild Dunes, Isle of Palms. In the second day of 70s play, the Indigo Run Men’s 3.5s won their third straight team match and lost one but advanced to the Saturday final. Match play began today in Super Senior 60s and will complete in-group play Saturday, leading into Sunday finals.

The Killer Bees won their first teams matches Thursday, then encountered the also unbeaten Seabrook Grandes Dames. The split two courts, but then Captain Catherine Haight and Janet Palmer pulled out a 7-5, 6-7, 1-0 match on Court One for the championship. The clincher went this way:

HHI, CCTA Teams 11-0 in Day One of Men’s, Women’s 70s at Super Senior State Championships

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Hilton Head Island and Coastal Carolina team are unbeaten in the first day of the South Carolina Super Senior State Championships at Wild Dunes, Isle of Palms. Match play begins Friday in Super Senior 60s. The 70s will complete in-group play Friday and play finals Saturday; SS60s will run Friday-Sunday.

The SS 60s 2.5 division will not be played until next week. As it turned out, only two local teams entered for States – Moss Creek and Country Club of Hilton Head -- and, since both are from our area, they will face off against each other here in a best-of-three playoff.

Hardeeville Takes a Step Forward With Tennis Carnival

HARDEEVILLE SC (TENNIS E-News) – Thirty kids and adults got a special initiation into the “sport for a lifetime” at a recent tennis festival at the school courts.

Bluffton tennis coordinator and high school coach Bob Brown was joined by Assistant Coach Kristen Kelly and two boys' team players earning Community Service credit - Chris Davis and Brantley Groshan – in conducting the carnival. Volunteers Linda Evans and Jackie Houck were also participated.

If kids and adults signed up, visited a lesson court and a skill court, they were given a free racquet donated by Julie Jilly and the Professional Tennis Registry. USTA South Carolina’s Graham Cox donated prizes. “Hardeeville has four nice hard courts which are not being used much,” Brown said. “We are sure that a follow-up would yield at least a Saturday morning beginner program to start. I challenged

About 10 ninth and tenth graders to ask athletic director/principal to start a high school team tennis program.

The event was sponsored by Public Tennis Inc. and funded by a grant from the Sun City Tennis Club.

Yet to be decided: Whose jurisdiction Hardeeville/Ridgeland comes under for developing tennis programs, leagues and such.

The Island Championship Finals Set for Sunday at Palmetto Dunes

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – The Island Championship ended today at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center.

HHI, CCTA Teams Set for Super Senior State Championships Starting Thursday

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Split of the local USTA League into Hilton Head Island and Coastal Carolina divisions will take the next step in its manifestation next weekend as champions from each program head for South Carolina Super Senior State Championships at Wild Dunes, Isle of Palms. Match play begins Thursday in Super Senior 70s and will run through Saturday; SS60s will run Friday-Sunday.

Up until now, teams from both sides of The Bridge battled out during the season, with the top one or two going to States. Now, with HHI and CCTA, more teams are tripping to the championships. And, yes, TENNIS E-News will make an attempt at covering all of them. Being a transitional stage, not all divisions were split for the fall season, particularly on the top and bottom rating rungs. The SS 60s 2.5 division, for instance, played under the CCTA wing. As it turned out, only two local teams entered for States – Moss Creek and Country Club of Hilton Head -- and, since both are from our area, they will face off against each other here in a best-of-three playoff.

QuickStart Kids Tournament Set for Saturday the 22^nd at Hampton Hall

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – A one-day-only QuickStart Tennis Tournament for youngsters will be held Saturday, Nov. 22 at Hampton Hall, presented by Lowcountry Sports Network.

Youngsters will play in two divisions: 8 and younger and 10 and younger. Short court and special balls will be used. A compass draw format will be used to give players multiple matches.

Entry fee is $20 per player with a T-shirt and prizes included. The entry form is an attachment to this issue.

SC League Coordinators To Decide on Out-of-Area Rules Affecting TAHHI, CCTA

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – A Nov. 15 meeting of South Carolina local league coordinators will work on rules and formats for the 2009 season, including those affecting players living in one area and playing in another, such as living in Bluffton and playing on a Hilton Head Island team and vice versa. This is a meeting held each year at this time by state and local coordinators.

According to information received by TAHHI Local League Coordinator Jackie Reynecke, State Coordinators Mary Goins and Jimmy Sain will conduct the closed meeting, with only the local league coordinators from all the state’s league programs attending.

“It’s a working meeting where the Spring 2009 rules for SC in the Adult and Senior leagues are written,” Reynecke said. “Mary and Jimmy will inform us of any changes in the National and Southern rules that will impact our state and may also then impact our local leagues. We will receive our 2009 LLC manual which is tool for not only rules changes, but 2009 championship information, 2009 league calendar, any new forms that need to be used for next year, etc.”

After the Nov. 15 meeting, the SC rules will go to Southern Section for approval. “After that happens,” Reynecke said, “we will be directed to write our local league rules for our playing areas.”

One of the areas that probably will be addressed at this meeting, Reynecke said, is out-of-state and out-of-area approvals. “Those two topics are actually addressed every year. There may be some changes in the process which may or may not impact our local level, but again TAHHI and CCTA will be directed on how to handle those approvals by state if needed.”

She added: “I know that many players are worried about whether they will be allowed to play on former teams or just need to go through a formal process in order to do so. It is my intent at our state workshop to communicate the wishes of those players who want to continue with their original teams and are willing to go through a formal process, if needed, and that we would like a blanket approval directive in our local league rules to cover that.”

9 HHI, Bluffton Special Olympics Athletes Win Medals at SC Fall Games in Anderson

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Nine Special Olympics athletes from Hilton Head Island and Bluffton had their best showing yet at the 2008 annual South Carolina Fall Games last weekend in Anderson. Of the more than 1,000 athletes participating, 85 were there for tennis and competed in individual skills as well as singles and doubles matches.

In individual skills, gold medals went to Taylor Taber, Tanzania Polite, John Baker and Michelle Myers. Aimee Grayson won a silver in her skills event. Wallace Gamble and Meghan Witherly each won a gold for singles and Rashawn Young and Steve Cole won silver. Additional medals were won by Young and Gamble for finishing first in doubles and Witherly and Cole for placing second in doubles.

Annual TAHHI Tournament

54 Players Competing in 15 Divisions in The Island Championship

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – With a membership of 1,600 to 1,700, the Tennis Association of Hilton Head Island has 54 players competing this weekend in its annual tournament that this year is traveling under the name The Island Championship.

The tournament reports that play will begin Friday at noon at Palmetto Dunes and resume Saturday at 9 a.m. at Port Royal. Final rounds will begin Sunday morning at 9 at Palmetto Dunes.

Round Robins will be played in Men’s 3.5 singles, Men’s 4.0 doubles, Men’s 55+ doubles 4.0, Men’s Open doubles, Men’s Open singles, Mixed 4.0 doubles and Women’s 3.5 singles. Best two out of three matches will be played in Men’s 4.5 doubles, Mixed 2.5 doubles, Mixed 3.0 doubles, Mixed 3.5 doubles, Mixed 4.5 doubles and Women’s 4.0 singles. A straight draw will be played in Men’s 4.0 singles and Women’s 3.5 doubles.
