Hilton Head Island SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) – The semifinals and finals of the Luck of the Irish Tournament will begin early Sunday at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center and continue until, well, don’t expect them to finish in time to make it to the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Sunday Morning at 10 for Van Der Meer Men’s & Women’s Open Championships—Singles Then Doubles

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) – Ricardo Gonzalez will face Christophe Bonadona and Nicola Slater will go against Victoria Laskutova in the 10 a.m. finals Sunday of the Van Der Meer Tennis Open Championships at the VDMTCenter on DeAllyon Road. Doubles semifinals and finals will follow in this first of three 2009 VDM Men’s and Women’s Open tournaments.

Admission is free for the matches that will run through much of the afternoon, ending with women’s and men’s doubles finals set for 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. Here is what happened today and what’s scheduled Sunday by Tournament Director Justyn Schelver:

5th Annual DMC Tennis Championships April 3-5 at Chaplin, HHIHS, Shipyard

Hilton Head Island SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) -- The David M. Carmines Memorial Foundation and Coligny Plaza will host the 5th annual DMC Tennis Championships Apr. 3-5. The tournament will take place at Chaplin Public Tennis Center, Hilton Head Island High School and Van Der Meer/Shipyard Racquet Club.

This USTA-sanctioned tournament and will feature adult and junior divisions including: Junior 10s-18s singles and doubles, adult men’s and women’s open doubles, open mixed doubles, rated doubles and singles 3.0-4.5 and combo mixed 6.0-9.0. Prizes will be awarded to all champions and finalists.

The entry fee is $40 for a singles and $25 per doubles player. Entry fee includes a players’ party, raffle, continental breakfast, snacks, beverages, a tournament gift and T-shirt. The players’ party will be catered by Hudson’s Seafood and will take place Friday, Apr. 3 from 6-8 p.m. at Chaplin Park.

Tournament entry can be online or at the Island Recreation Center or Players World of Sports. For online, go to http://www.usta.com, select ‘Tournaments’ and use ID# 704107009 for adults and 704122809 for juniors. Entry deadline is Mar. 29 and draw times will be posted Mar. 31.

Torch Lighting Ceremony Starts Event

Free Pro Exhibition Monday Marks Special Olympics Championships at VDM Shipyard

Hilton Head Island SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) – A free exhibition Monday starring HHI pros Tom Coulton, Scott Nichols, Tommy Shimada and Matt Wuller will be featured at the opening ceremonies of next week’s Special Olympics Tennis Championships. A junior exhibition also will be played by Michelle Green of HHI and Alrissa Tobe of Bluffton. The exhibition will begin at 6:15 and will set in motion several days of SO competition.

What happens when a ball from an adjacent court rolls on your court between first and second serves? The time it takes to clear an intruding ball between the first and second serves is not considered sufficient time to warrant the server receiving two serves unless this time is so prolonged as to constitute an interruption. The receiver is the judge of whether the delay is sufficiently prolonged to justify giving the server two serves.

Luck of the Irish Opens With Full Afternoon and Evening of Matches

Hilton Head Island SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) – With 204 players hoping to get lucky this weekend, the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center was overflowing with action this afternoon and tonight for the 26^th annual Luck of the Irish Tournament. Matches will resume very early Saturday morning and run through the day in men’s, women’s and mixed doubles levels of 2.5 through open. Admission is free to spectators.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) – The first of three 2009 Van Der Meer Tennis’ Men’s and Women’s Open tournaments opened play today and will continue through the weekend. Admission is free to spectators.

Saturday matches will begin at 9:30 a.m. and run throughout the day. Men’s quarterfinals will start at 10 with semis taking place at 1 p.m.

Hilton Head Island SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) – The Tennis Association of Hilton Head Island’s first social round robin of the year will be Sunday, Mar. 29 at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center. Registration is open at the association’s website – http://www.tahhi.org.

The members-only Spring Social will feature two round robins, starting with 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and following from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Registration deadline is Mar. 25.

Deadline Today for This Weekend’s Van Der Meer Men’s & Women’s Open Championships

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) – The first of three Van Der Meer Tennis’ Men’s and Women’s Open tournaments will begin play Friday. Entry deadline is TODAY, by contacting Tournament Director Justyn Schelver at 785-8388, ext. 119.

The non-sanctioned Men’s and Women’s singles and doubles will include rating levels 4.0, 4.5, 5.0 and 5.5. Teaching professionals, college players and competitive juniors will make up the bulk of the Open draws that are limited to 32 entries in singles and 16 teams in doubles. Matches will be played on the hard courts of Van Der Meer DeAllyon Road center.

Play will begin Friday afternoon the 6^th, with pro set format to the quarterfinals of each division. A cash prize of $500 to the singles champion will be dependant on full draw.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – The annual festival of college tennis on Hilton Head Island will begin Sunday with seven dual matches, setting the pace for Spring Break Tennis 2009 that will run with a similarly busy daily schedule until the end of March. Admission is free to spectators for all the matches.

More than 210 college teams from throughout the eastern half of the country will be competing this year. That’s about 2,500 players and coaches, many accompanied by parents and friends who will infuse one helluva chunk of change into Hilton Head Island and area lodging, restaurants, souvenir shops and the like.

Hilton Head Island Beach & Tennis Resort again will be SBT headquarters for owner/operator Ray Yost, who also is head coach for Mercyhurst College of Erie PA. Matches will be played morning, afternoon and night there throughout the month. Many satellite sites will be in play, including Chaplin Public Tennis Center, Hilton Head Island High School and Middle School, Bluffton High, Beaufort Academy and some at Bacon Park in Savannah.

Entry Still Open for Monday Big Night for Kids -- Free Clinics, Food, HBO Tennis & Signups

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Monday will be a big chance for HHI and area youngsters and their parents to tie into tennis programs for the rest of the year, with HHI Beach & Tennis Resort and Shoreline Ballroom host of the first annual Tennis Night in America.

Theme of the night of free clinics, food and top women’s tennis on HBO will be registration of juniors for spring and summer programs offered and supported by area tennis organizations: Tennis Association of HHI, Public Tennis, Inc., Coastal Carolina Tennis Association and Beaufort Tennis Association. Information and registration will be provided for Quick Start, Junior Team Tennis, summer camps, lessons, academies and more.

A raffle, Tennis Night in America Hats, discounted USTA Memberships, a commemorative program the same as given out at the Madison Square Garden match – all part of the evening that will have about 150 participants. Clinics start at 5:30 p.m. Youngsters will be served dinner in the Shoreline Ballroom at 6:30 p.m. The HBO telecast of the BNP Paribus Billie Jean King Cup will begin at 7:30 and feature Venus and Serena Williams, Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic.

HHI’s Ashley Kitchen Straight-Sets Her Way to SMASH Jr. Clay Court Championship

CHARLESTON SC (TENNIS E-News) – Unseeded Hilton Head Islander Ashley Kitchen completed her march through the SMASH Junior Clay Court Championships Girls’ 16s Monday with a 6-2, 6-2 final over Islander Kendal Drake.

The final was Kitchen’s fifth straight two-set win in the tournament that drew 330 players from throughout the East Coast. With Kitchen taking first place and Drake second, Islander Zeynep Mafa stepped into the #3 finish of the 16s by winning the playoff for third and fourth place over #2 seed Hannah Ecleberry of Mathews NC 5-7, 6-3, 6-0.

Other HHI juniors emerged with some successes. Erik Halaj lost to the Boys’ 18s #1 seed, then won four backdraw matches before losing in the consolation final to Islander Jan Surovic, who had made it to the main draw quarterfinals before rolling through to the consi final win.

Bethany Dyar lost in the Girls’ 14 Round of 16 to eventual champion Allison Riske of MacMurray PA, who has trained on HHI. Dyar then progressed through the consolations before losing in the semifinals. HHI’s Isabelle Boulais lost in the main draw first round, but won three times in consolation before losing in the semifinals.
