PAWLEYS ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- HHIslanders Keith Whitlow in singles and Hank Iannuzzi/Bryce Young in doubles made comebacks Sunday to battle through high temps and humidity for third-set final victories in the South Carolina Senior State Closed Tennis Championships. Bluffton's Bob Wiederhorn won a straight-setter singles title. HHI's Eddie Goodson and Fred Carrillo lost in singles finals.

After losing the first day and a half to rain, players played back-to-back no-ad and third-set match tiebreaks until the finals. The mid-July weather on autumn equinox weekend took out more than a couple players, including one who collapsed after a match and required EMS treatment.

Whitlow, the #2 seed in Men's 60s, came back from a set down to defeat #1 Mike Sprengelmeyer 6-7, 6-1, 6-4. Top seeds Iannuzzi and Young won their 60s doubles championship in a third set 9-7 tiebreak over Bud Goodrich/Doyle Loftis. (Score posted was 6-2, 7-6, 7-6(7), but we know that's not quite correct.) #2 Wiederhorn took the measure of #1 Joe Roberts 7-5, 6-1 for the Men's 75s championship.

Goodson upset top seed Larry Rizzo 3-6, 6-3, 1-0(5) in the Men's 55s semifinals Saturday but went down to #2 seed Henry Dowd 6-0, 6-0 in the Sunday final. Carrillo took out 70s #1 seed Johnnie Williams, who retired at 7-5, 4-1 in the semis. The HHIslander lost in the final 6-0, 6-1 to #3 Neil Vroegop.

HHI's #1-seeded Tom Jilly won his Men's 45s semifinal, but defaulted the finals for heat exhaustion. Islander Pat Child took an injury retirement down 6-4, 1-0 in the Men's 50s semifinals. He and Whitlow, #1 in the 50s doubles, won their Sunday semifinals, but defaulted the final.

Deadline Extended to Tuesday for Entry into Banana Open Challenge

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The deadline has been extended for winners and finalists of the local Banana Open tournaments to enter the Banana Open Challenge. The new deadline is Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., Tournament Director Jackie Reynecke announced. That deadline also applies for the lottery by non-winners to get into the draws. The tournament will be Oct. 5-7 at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center.

Entry forms may be picked up at PDTC for HHI area players. All other participants are welcome to put in a lottery entry. Eligibility is based upon participation in a local banana during 2007 in any of the tournament sites: Montgomery County MD; Asheville and Charlotte NC; Savannah, Warner Robbins, Martinez, Columbus and Jekyll Island GA; Virginia Beach VA and HHIsland.

Spring Lake Odd Couples Will Be Headed to Southern Mixed Doubles Championships

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- SL The Odd Couples came within a match tiebreak of the South Carolina 6.0 Mixed Doubles State Championship. Now, the Spring Lake team, captained by Pat Kenworthy, will be representing the state at the Southern Sectionals in New Orleans.

The Lexington Old Racquets, winner of the SC title, can't get it together for Southerns, so the spot was open and The Odd Couples will fill it Oct. 20-22 in Cary NC.

Adult Team Tennis Gets Ready for Fall Season; Combo Rating Levels 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The Adult USA Team Tennis (or is it now USTA?) is setting up plans for its fall season that will begin in late October, playing a mixed doubles format, report coordinators Ray Hardy and Tim Ryan on HHI and Bob Brown in Bluffton. The league, which emphasizes fun and health benefits, is adopting a new format this year.

Last year there were five teams competing -- four at Chaplin Park and one in Bluffton. A turnout at least that large is anticipated. The new team format will be combined mixed doubles levels of 5.5, 6.0, 6-5 and 7.0, aiming to adapt to the fewer numbers of 2.5 and 4.0 players compared to 3.0 and 3.5.

Cost for player registration at Chaplin will be $36, which includes TennisLink fee. The $32 fee portion will go to the respective Public Tennis, Inc. branch -- HHI or Bluffton. A format of 10-game pro sets with ad scoring is planned. Mid-week after work practices are planned for Bluffton players on the high school courts. A $39 fee covers league and court fees for Blufftonians.

Matches will be scheduled on Saturdays with the possibility of Sunday afternoon matches because of holidays and tournaments. Each team will play each other twice -- one home, one away. The planned season is Oct. 27 through Jan. 13., with bye weekends 11/17-11/18 (Turkey Tourney), 11/24-11/25 (Thanksgiving), 12/22-12/23 (Christmas), 12/29-12/30 (New Year's).

The 75s is an unofficial official USTA League format organized by Men's coordinator Don Grider. Results, though recorded in TennisLink, will not be calculated in this year's rating determination.

Super Seniors 75s Get Rolling, Along with 60s and 70s; Combo in Midseason Form

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- It's official. They're on the courts and playing. Another Hilton Head Island first: Super Senior 75s. Men's 3.0 and 3.5 teams are competing in a pilot program that surely, like the 60s and 70s that began here, will end up in national championships in a couple years.

With the start of the 75s, the whole of the Super Senior season now engaged -- the 60s and 70s aiming toward late October finishes to qualify for South Carolina State Championships Nov. 8-11 on Seabrook Island.

Meanwhile, Combo is rolling through its midseason. Here are the standings as we find them from TennisLink to date:

Men's Interclub Gets First Call To Register Teams; Season Starts in Late October

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- With Super Seniors into their season starts, the first call is out for the followup Senior Men's Interclub Tennis League that will follow in late October and early November.

League coordinator Dick Sonberg reports that there will NOT be a formal organization meeting; everything will be done by email. Teams that want to enroll must email Sonberg at rtsiws@aol.com. The league will play through January, 2008.

The registration email deadline is Oct. 1 and must include: Name of team, site of matches, time matches commence, name of captain with email address and telephone, name of assistant captain with email address and telephone, level of play for which team is registering (2.5, 3.0, 3.5 or 4.0)

After the enrollment deadline, Sonberg will prepare schedules and email to all. Then team rosters must be submitted. No limit on number of players on the roster; all players must reach 50 years of age by Dec. 31, 2008 (not 2007). All players are bound by their USTA-designated rating. If anyone is bumped up in the new ratings issued in December, it will not affect their right to play at the old rating through this season.

Sonberg asks that all team captains notify their pros of intention to play. Any individual players wanting to get on a team also should contact the coordinator.

Junior Team Tennis Gets Ready for Fall Season

BLUFFTON SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Registration for the fall Junior Team Tennis season will open Oct. 1 for its seventh season, designed to allow competition between boys and girls ages 8-18 in Beginner (must be able to serve and keep score), Intermediate and Advanced classifications.

This fall, local juniors of all ages and levels are welcome to join teams in hope that levels other than the 18 and Under Intermediate will be filled, league coordinator Bob Brown said. Currently five teams (Bluffton Badkatz, Wexford, Beaufort, Racquet Club Villains and the Chaplin Park Landsharks) are scheduled to compete in a format that features; Boys and Girls Singles, Boys and Girls Doubles, and Mixed Doubles in an eight-game pro-set with all winning games contributing to the team total. Highest number of team games won during an eight-match season will determine the teams to advance to the State Championship.

Teams are professionally coached during practice sessions by area pros Scott Nichols, Patrick Mason and Brown, among others. USTA Membership required and an on-line team registration fee which covers practices/matches, balls, and tee shirt. The season will be mid-November through mid-January with matches played on weekends. No player needs to be available for all matches. "This is a perfect way to keep kids playing year-round, particularly JV and varsity kids looking forward to or just completing a high school season," Brown said. Spring Lake The Odd Couples Lose by TSMT in State Mixed Doubles Finals

CHARLESTON SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- It almost always comes down to a third-set match tiebreak, doesn't it? And some day USTA will use part of member dues increase to hire someone smart enough to provide a score for those TSMTs other than "1-0".

In any case, SL The Odd Couples lost a 10-pointer that cost them the Senior 6.0 title in the USTA League South Carolina State Mixed Doubles Championships. A similar fate came to the Senior 7.0 Wexford Topspinners in today's semifinals.

The Spring Lake 6.0s, captained by Charles Costabell, had lost their first match Saturday morning, but came back with two wins Sunday and picked up a wildcard into the semifinals. There, the Odd Couples handled the Columbia Summer Slices, taking two TSMTs plus one court in straight sets. In the championship match to earn a trip to Southerns, Spring Lake split Courts 1 and 2 with the Lexington Old Racquets in straight sets. On Court 3, Lexington won the first set; the Lakers came back to take the second, then the Old Racquets won the match tiebreak, ah, 1-0. Sure. Like they played one point. Damn, dumb score reporting!

The Wexford 'Spinners, captained by Janet Goldin, were 3-0 going into the semifinals. That string ended in a 1-0 TSMT on Court 1, sending the Lexington Tennis Complex team to Southerns in Cary NC Oct. 20-22. The chance of a wildcard is always open at Southerns. With nine states sending champion teams, a 10th is added to create two even groupings for the opening two days of round robin play.

In a couple of also-rans running, Columbia #3 Caughman Road won the Adult 6.0s, not losing a team match throughout the tournament. In 8.0 Adult bracket, wildcard Columbia/Southeast Park Mixed Mayhem lived up to its name by winning the semifinals, but losing in the finals.

Children's Center Tennis & Golf Benefit Set for Saturday; Deadline Wednesday

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The 2007 Weichert Charity Golf & Tennis Challenge will be held Saturday to benefit The Children's Center of Hilton Head Island & Bluffton. The event will be held at the Melrose Tennis Center & Golf Course on Daufuskie Island. Entry deadline is Wednesday.

The center helps Hilton Head Island area low income families with quality day care and early childhood development.
Golf shotgun start will be at 10 a.m. A World Team Tennis format will be followed in a round robin that will be played from 10 a.m. to noon. Golf fee is $155 per person; tennis is $65 per player. Fees include ferry transportation and lunch for tennis and lunch and dinner for golf.

Senior 7.0 Topspinners, Senior 6.0 Odd Couples in State Mixed Doubles Semifinals Monday

CHARLESTON SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- Wexford Topspinners swept all three courts to win their group, while Spring Lake The Odd Couples placed second in group but advanced as a wild card to Monday semifinals in the USTA League South Carolina State Mixed Doubles Championships.

The Senior 7.0 Wexford Topspinners, captained by Janet Goldin, lost only one court in three team matches during the preliminary group round robin. The Senior 6.0 Spring Lakers, captained by Charles Costabell, lost a close first round match Saturday, but came back with a 2-1 win this morning. The HHI #1 team at States then took a 3-0 victory in midafternoon.

The Senior 6.0 HHI #2 Wexford Seniors, captained by Catherine Forlenza, went 2-0 with a win this morning, but fell this afternoon 3-0 to Spartanburg, the group winner.

The Monday morning semifinals will be followed by championship finals to determine which teams will advance to the Southern Sectionals in Oct. 20-22 in Cary NC.
