HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Tonya Tobe of Bluffton was voted onto the USTA South Carolina Board of Directors Sunday, assuming the South Area seat that covers the HHI-to-Bluffton-to-Beaufort-to
Tobe's elevation took place during the USTA SC Annual Meeting Weekend at The Westin Resort. That session, held on HHI for several years, will move to Myrtle Beach next year -- Dec. 12–14 at the Marina Inn. Also on the move for 2008 will be the SC Super Senior State Championships that have been held on Seabrook Island. Beginning in '08, that action will be on Isle of Palms (Wild Dunes).
In addition to the back-to-back committee sessions and a business meeting keynote talk by Dr. Jim Loehr of the Human Performance Institute, the weekend included the Hall of Fame and SC Awards Banquet. HHIslanders receiving awards were Judy Levering, adult female player of the year; Hayley Carter, junior girl player of the year, and Zach Sprouse, Wilton McKinney Award.
One of the major USTA SC project for 2008, Tobe said, will be the Rising Stars Program that gives juniors with less than 200 ranking points the opportunity to play tournaments at the Novice level. More of these tournaments will be added in 2008. In addition, the Challenger Circuit will be changed in 2008. In 2007, juniors were not able to play Challengers if they were within the top 25 in their state and also could not play up. In 2008, juniors will be able to play up as long as they are not in the Top 25 of the age that they wish to play. For example, if a junior is in the top 25 of the 14s but are ranked lower in the 16s, they will be allowed to play 16s of the Challenger Circuit.

USTA Teams Set Up; Team Numbers Coming Next Week So Rosters Can Be Filled
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- USTA League team pre-registrations are in and level coordinators are processing them for the next step toward the 2008 spring season: Assignment of team numbers so players can register on their team rosters. Team numbers should be out by the end of next week.
With a team number in hand, the online roster should have a minimum of six (6) players by Jan. 6. That's two days before the Jan. 8 Captains Meeting that will be set up in afternoon and evening sessions aimed at, but not restricted to, new captains. When teams have the required number registered, level coordinators can begin scheduling for the season that will begin as early as the last week in January for some levels.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- A comment included in the last TE-News "Teams Need Players" section was incorrect. The comment dealt with the number of lower-level players that are allowed on a USTA League team.
"(The) rule has not been waived for any team in our leagues for the year 2008," Local League Coordinator Jackie Reynecke said, adding: "We have had some requests already, but they are all being reviewed."
"We (the coordinators) feel that it is too early to make a decision on those individual cases. There are many players looking for teams, and we strongly feel that a team should utilize players whose ratings are exact for that division instead of bringing in lower rated players."
Concerning the requested waivers, Reynecke added: "We also feel that if players of lower ratings are playing up that they should make the commitment to that team and first make an effort to appeal for the higher rating." The rule pertaining to such local team waivers can be found in the 2007 league rules on www.tahhi.org. For 2008, a Rule 3.01B will read (paraphrased here) like this:
Adults 3.0-4.5 – Rosters of 15-16 players can only have 4 lower rated players registered.
Rosters of 10-14 players can only have 3 lower rated players registered.
9 or less – 2
Adults 2.5 and 5.0 – Rosters of 10-14 players can only have 3 lower rated players registered.
9 or less – 2
Seniors -- all levels – Rosters of 10-14 players can only have 3 lower rated players registered.
9 or less – 2

About Separating the USTA League
You read the responses from the "prosecution"; Now for the "defense" view
(TENNIS E-News) -- Those comments following our simplistic, unscientific poll on whether/how the USTA leagues should be divided geographically produced lots of comments. The "poll" had not much to do with reality as to upcoming action -- just a testing of the waters … and The Bridge. Stay tuned.
Three more comments:
" … As for sandbaggers … Dataw requires all its tennis members to live on the island and maintain a sport membership or pay for an off-island membership - no exceptions. We often play teams where few if any live at the place they play - in other words - recruit, recruit! We drive to HH about one out of every two matches."
"That comment about the "sandbaggers on the southend of the Island" amuses me. It has to refer in strong measure to
our teams out of Sea Pines Country Club, since we have consistently led the HHI teams, especially at the 3.0 level. Why "amuse"? Because Sea Pines CC is one of the few "clubs" on the Island that relies solely on its members to field its teams. Our club bylaws prohibit (anyone else). In the super seniors (states), 75% of our players were over 75 in age. The only sandbag we know about are the ones around our 75-year old feet that keep us from chasing down all the balls like we used to."

How To Find Ratings -- Individual, Team, Everyone's -- Start with http://www.sctennis.com and, at left on the Home Page, select TennisLink, then select Leagues, then (on the right) scroll down to Find a Rating. You can key in an individual name or scroll to the Drilldown Search which will get you to a series of dropdown windows to select Championship Year (2007), Section (Southern), District (South Carolina) and Area (SC-Hilton Head Island). From there, select whether you want all players, only Women's 3.5s, etc. The "Ratings Appeals" tab is on the sctennis.com.

How To Become a Hilton Head Islander …
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- If you live on Hilton Head Island, you are a Hilton Head Islander. Maybe. If you live on the Island, but identify yourself as from Hilton Head, then you are not an Islander.
For a Hilton Header to become an Islander, one must update USTA membership information to show "Hilton Head Island" and not "Hilton Head". Go to http://www.usta.com and, in upper right corner, select "Membership". Then, again at the right, scroll down to "Update My Information" and select that. You may have to go through a get-a-password procedure. Just follow the directions and key in "Hilton Head Island" for your home town. So simple.
