PTR Prize-Money Championships Chased Indoors by the Weather

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Life was a tad damp today in the $25,000 Professional Tennis Registry Championships at Van der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club. The few semifinals and finals that were scheduled today were scrubbed in order for larger draws to catch up … given the chance of late-afternoon drying of courts and some matches played indoors. Matches are open free to spectators. Also open to the public is the Tennis Trade Show Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon.

PTR pros are continuing daylong seminars, workshops and on-court demonstrations through Friday. Evenings are devoted to cookouts, special dinners and an annual awards banquet.

HHI Players Seeds in PTR Prize-Money Championships Under Way Today

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The annual Professional Tennis Registry Championships got started today at Van der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club, with teaching pros from throughout the world competing. Some Hilton Head Island pros are among those seeded in the $25,000 tournament that will run through the middle of next week.

Matches are open free to spectators. Also open to the public is the Tennis Trade Show Thursday (21^st) from 9 a.m. to noon.

PTR pros will be engaged in daylong seminars, workshops and on-court demonstrations Sunday through Friday. Evenings are devoted to cookouts, special dinners and an annual awards banquet.

‘Luck of the Irish' Doubles Ready for its Silver Anniversary at Palmetto Dunes

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – It’s silver anniversary time for the “Luck of the Irish” Doubles Tournament, set for Mar. 7-9 at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center. The 25th annual will be played in rated men’s, women’s and mixed doubles from 2.5 through open.

Sponsored by Giuseppi’s Pizza & Pasta, Hilton Head Mortgage and Adventure Radio, the tournament will begin Friday morning the 7th with the possibility of some Thursday evening matches in large draws. Play will continue all Saturday and start early Sunday so players can make it to the Island's St. Patrick’s Parade.

Entry fee is $40 per person for one event and $50 if playing in two ($10 late fee). Entry deadline is Sunday, Mar. 2. (An entry form is an attachment to this issue.)

Women's Pro Tour

Defending, Former Champions Line Up for Bausch & Lomb, Family Circle in April

(TENNIS E-News) -- Champions Tatiana Golovin and Jelena Jankovic have signed on to defend their respective titles at the Bausch & Lomb Championships and Family Circle Cup women's pro tour events coming up in April at Amelia Island FL and Daniel Island, Charleston. Hilton Head Islanders will be heading for the events by the busload and carload.

Former champion Venus Williams and comeback "kid" Lindsay Davenport are scheduled to challenge 2007 winner Golovin at Amelia Island's Bausch & Lomb Apr. 7-13. For tickets and information, go to http://www.bauschandlombchampionships.com.

A busload of spectators from HHI's Spring Lake Racquet Club will be in the stands Tuesday, Apr. 8. To check if seats are available for the bus trip, call the club at 681-3626.

Daniel Island (Charleston) will be celebrating the 35th anniversary Family Circle Cup Apr. 12-20 with a lineup that includes '07 champion Jankovic, as well as WTA #1 Justine Henin, Venus and Serena Williams, Anna Chakvetadze, Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli and Nadia Petrova, among others.

Finishing the Job at Chaplin Public Tennis Center

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (from The Chaplin Chatter) -- Work by the Town of Hilton Head Island will soon begin to complete the two new courts at Chaplin Public Tennis Center. The courts were opened for play last February.

Improvements to the courts will include completion of the concrete walking paths as well as a concrete pad that will house a covered awning and two new sets of bleachers. New benches for the courts are on the center's wish list. There is currently no seating available during changeovers.

A message from USTA Southern: HELP US MAINTAIN THE INTEGRITY OF LEAGUE TENNIS!

(Excerpted from the USTA Southern's NTRP rating information.)

The USTA Southern Section asks all players, captains, coordinators, tennis professionals and volunteers to join the campaign to keep the NTRP levels intact and maintain the integrity of league tennis!

Current Concerns:

In many cases, captains have instigated self-rating abuses by players.

Players and captains mistakenly believe that self-rating one level too low is somehow “okay.”

All players who are self-rating to enter a USTA Southern Section league program are instructed to consider their on-court performance, tennis background, age, physical condition and comparisons to current league players when determining their self-ratings. They should choose the higher level when unsure of where they will be most compatible and competitive.

The great majority of league players would NEVER intentionally or knowingly self-rate too low, “tank” matches or try to gain an unfair advantage. The small number of players and captains who will resort to these tactics seem to believe they “are getting away” with this form of cheating. Our existing league players need to help us create a culture where this is not encouraged but truly seen as a detriment to league tennis.

Grider Named TAHHI's Volunteer of the Year; Schwarz, Sprouse Best in Sportsmanship

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The Tennis Association of HHI named Don Grider its Volunteer of the Year in recognition of his senior league organization that, among other things, has led to a USTA Super Seniors national championship competition.

Grider received the Dick Stitt Award and its accompanying $500 check at TAHHI's annual meeting and banquet Wednesday at Hilton Head Island Beach & Tennis Resort. TAHHI also honored the HHI Tennis Professionals Association with a volunteers' award and $500 check for the pros' overall work in developing the sport here.

TAHHI's two sportsmanship awards went to Amanda Schwarz and Zach Sprouse. The Kerry Melville Reid and Stan Smith awards also included a $500 check each and were presented by their namesakes. Schwarz was SCISA player of the year at HH Christian Academy and will be playing at College of Charleston. Sprouse, top USTA South Carolina award winner, was a standout at the Heritage Academy and will play at Presbyterian College. Both train at Smith-Stearns Tennis Academy.

Grider was co-founder locally of Senior Seniors now in its 13^th year that has been adopted by USTA into the nationwide championships. The leagues have developed into SS60s, SS70s and, last fall, the SS75s that this year may be part of the South Carolina Super Senior Championships.

In the TAHHI business meeting preceding the dinner and dancing, four new board of directors members were selected: Becky Davis, David Camma, Bunny Wardlaw and Joe Kopf.

Davis is sales and marketing manager for The Cypress of Hilton Head Island. Camma is a web marketing designer with Anderson Interactive. Wardlaw served in many capacities with the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association including director of wheelchair clinics and level and overall coordinator for mixed doubles and has worked with the PTR Wheelchair Tournament here. Kopf is retired from IBM and is vice chairman of the Town of HHI's Parks & Rec Commission.

Returning as board member are Jim Purcell, president; Doug Nabholz, Scott Hart, Mike O'Regan and Ray Pfeiffer, who has assumed duties of treasurer.

PD Net Cords Win 3.0 Senior Men's Interclub Championship

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- On a beautiful tennis day Tuesday afternoon, the Palmetto Dunes

Net Cords defeated the Sun City Dirt Balls by two courts to one and captured the 2007/2008 Senior Men's Interclub 3.0 championship. It was a close, hard-fought match throughout.

PD's Court #2 team Mike Kilpatrick/George Loomans won handily in two sets, as did the Sun City #3 Paul Naef/Alex Tax. It was a different story on Court #1. PD's Tom Walsh/Paul Weiss took the first set, but Sun City's Dennis Green/Bob Perrone battled back in the second set to send the match into a third set that would determine which team would be the overall champion. It went down to some serious final set points, but Palmetto Dunes prevailed.

This close match was expected since the Net Cords were undefeated in their regular season in Flight A, and in similar fashion the Dirt Balls were undefeated in Flight B. The match marked the conclusion of the 17th Interclub season and the last before the split of on-island, off-island leagues. In the fall, all HHI teams will be in one league. Status of the 'cross the bridge teams is to be determined.

PTI/Chaplin Logo T-shirts on Sale to Benefit Court-Building Fund

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Public Tennis Inc. has begun a T-shirt sale campaign to benefit $7,500-a-year court-building fund. For a $10 donation, proceeds will help towards the goal of $7,500 this year for the new court fund. The shirts are available to Chaplin Public Tennis Center USTA League teams as well as the general public. Sizes are S, M, L, XL, and XXL with a PTI "pocket logo" on the front and large Chaplin Tennis logo on the back. The shirts will be available at the Chaplin Sunday Round Robins and at team practices or by emailing chaplinroundrobin@hotmail.com. Checks should be payable to PTI.

Van der Meer Open Championships Coming Feb. 29; Draw Size Limited

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The Van der Meer prize-money Men's and Women's Open is set for Feb 29-March 1, with the men's draw approaching its singles and doubles limits, according to Tournament Director Justyn Schelver.

"I'll probably have to limit draws to 32 and 16 and will take entries in the order which they are received," Schelver said. Entries can be made by phone 422-4450 or by e-mail to justynschelver@hotmail.com. It is open to NTRP levels 4.5-5.5, teaching professionals, college players, and competitive juniors. Entry fee is $30 for singles and $50 per team for doubles.

The non-sanctioned open men's and women's event will be played on the hard courts at Van Der Meer Tennis Center. are encouraged to apply. Play will begin Friday afternoon the 29th. A first-match consolation will be held in Doubles, but not singles. Prizes will be awarded to the champion, runnerup, and consolation doubles champions. Cash prize of $500 to the singles and doubles champion is dependant on full draw.

In the TENNIS E-News story Thursday, the scholarship noted is the Toni Sarver (not Tony) scholarship and the Women's Tennis Organization (WTO) is under the SCTA-Sun City Tennis Association.

Also, the women's tennis teams were flattered, so one said, to be listed as leading a men's division, but 'tain't so. And we hope to get it correct next time around.
