189 Matches … and That’s Just for the Opening Rounds at SC Combo States

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) – Hilton Head Island league teams will hit the courts at 8 a.m. Friday, with matches scheduled in group round robins through Monday at 11 a.m. at the South Carolina Combo State Championships in Charleston.

Eighteen HHI league teams will be competing in Adult, Senior and Super Senior divisions with most engaged in preliminary group play that will determine teams to advance to semifinals and finals on Sunday and Monday. Some divisions with smaller team numbers will consist of a round robin with each team facing each other teams once and best record on TennisLink determining the champions.

The 18 local teams in the fray, Local Combo Coordinator Kathy Foulke reports, is a significant increase from the 10 teams that went to Combo States last year, thanks to several wild cards. The HHI league teams have 189 individual matches on tap, not counting any teams that advance to semifinal and/or final rounds. Stay tuned.

Players Set for USTA-Sanctioned Vacation Co. Adult Championships

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) -- About 125 players from throughout the East Coast will be here this weekend for the annual Vacation Company Adult Championships at Van Der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club. The Open Division will serve as the third of three prize-money championships that Van Der Meer has conducted this year. Spectator admission to all matches is free.

Although some matches may being Thursday, the majority of action will start on Friday, with a full schedule Saturday and finals in all divisions on Sunday. Senior divisions will run in age divisions of 35 through the 70s.

National Eastern Championships Next for Southern Winners Wexford Dream Team

NEW ORLEANS LA (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) – Hilton Head Island’s Wexford Dream Team proved once again that every court counts in sweeping to the Adult 5.0 title of the Southern Sectional Mixed Doubles Championships that ended Sunday. The Dreamers finished on top of their category by virtue of a better courts win/loss record than the team that placed second.

Next stop for the Cal Navis-captained team will be Nationals – interestingly called the National Eastern Mixed Doubles Championships. Yes, there is a National Western Championships, but no playoff (to our knowledge) between the winners of those.

A further note on the PDTC Senior 8.0s, captained by Tim Arr: They won the South Carolina championship on a string of wins in third-set match tiebreaks, losing only one. Over the Southerns weekend, they lost one … the wrong one … that cost them the group #1 spot. They did finish off the weekend, however, with a 3-0 win over Savannah’s Southbridge, taking all three courts in third-set match tiebreaks.

HHI’s Laskutova Wins Girls’ 12s Singles in Sea Pines/Rosie Gwynn Junior Championships

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) – The HHI corps of juniors came up with one singles championship and three finalist spots in the Sea Pines/Rosie Gwynn Junior Championships that ended today at Sea Pines Racquet Club. What started as a very wet opening morning Saturday turned into a long weekend of beautiful sunshine for the 250 boys and girls competing for the singles-only titles.

In Girls’ 12s, Ksenia Laskutova took her #5 seeding to best effect in the finals, defeating #4 Chloe Ouellet-Pizer 6-0, 6-1.

In Boys’ 14s, Islander Jared Woodson, seeded #5, lost in the finals to #3 Brent Lett 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

In Girls’ 18s, #2 seed Michelle Green of HHI lost to top-seeded Whitney Kay 6-1, 6-1.

In Girls’ 16s, #5 Ashley Kitchen of HHI lost to #1 Samantha Light 6-3, 6-3.

18 HHI League Teams Set for Combo State Championships This Weekend in Charleston

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) – You shouldn’t have much trouble finding an empty tennis court on HHI this weekend. Well, except at Van Der Meer Shipyard where the Vacation Company Adult Championships will be played. Otherwise, lots of courts will open up as 18 Hilton Head Island league teams head for Charleston for the South Carolina Combo State Championships.

Adult, Senior and Super Senior divisions will face off in the first-ever States to include the latter group. The schedule is up online at www.sctennis.com. We’ll catch up with that a bit later. Local Combo Coordinator Kathy Foulke received several wildcard opportunities from States and had local teams very willing to pick up the chance to compete on that level. A 19^th team – Senior Men’s 6.5 Spring Lake – was also eligible, but turned down the spot because the team is going in the Super Senior Division. Only 10 teams from the HHI leagues went to Combo States in 2007.

Wexford Dream Team Wins Southern Section Championship

NEW ORLEANS LA (TENNIS E-NEWS via TennisLink) – The Wexford Dream Team of Hilton Head Island won the Adult 5.0 Southern Mixed Doubles Championship, defeating teams from Louisiana and Mississippi today. The title was decided in a third-set super tiebreak won by team captain Cal Navis and partner Carrie Vormohr.

The afternoon victory kept the Dream Team in a 5-1 tie with the South Carolina ‘b’ Spartanburg that beat them yesterday. The HHI team took the championship by virtue of winning 14 courts, while losing 4. Spartanburg had a 12-6 courts won/loss record.

Hilton Head Island’s Senior 8.0 PDTC team, captained by Tim Arr, defeated Savannah Southbridge today, but the one loss yesterday kept them out of the category finals late today.

A more complete report on the HHI teams’ performances and further coverage of the Sea Pines/Rosie Gwynn Junior Championships will have to wait until we can find a working monitor and some place more customer-relations friendly than Staples (couldn’t-be-bothered-even-though-we-bought-our-monitor-there) HHI.

Wexford Dream Team Tied for First Place Going Into Final Day at Southern Mixed Doubles Sectionals

NEW ORLEANS LA (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) – Hilton Head Island’s Wexford Dream Team lost one of those third-set match tiebreaks that resulted in a team loss this morning, but won its second match to finish the day in a first-place tie heading into Sunday’s final round at the Southern Section Mixed Doubles Championships.

The Adult 5.0 Dream Team, the South Carolina “A” champions captained by Cal Navis, dropped a morning match to the SC “B” team that finished second in the state playoffs last month. Both teams have two matches Sunday in the round robin of seven teams.

Meanwhile, the Senior PDTC 8.0s of Captain Tim Arr won their South Carolina championship last month through success in third-set match tiebreaks. Today they lost just one, but it was the deciding court in a 2-1 loss in the morning. They came back with a 3-0 sweep in the afternoon, but now must win in the morning and get some help from another team in order to reach the afternoon finals.

Sea Pines/Rosie Gwynn Junior Championships Get Late Start, But Set for Full Day of Matches Sunday

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – The rain was a nasty wakeup call for the crews at Sea Pines Racquet Club and its satellite sites, delaying the start of the Sea Pines/Rosie Gwynn Junior Championships that has 250 top Southeast players in its draws. Matches will resume early Sunday and continue through the day at Harbour Town and Sea Pines Country Club, South Beach and Palmetto Dunes. Admission to the matches is free to spectators (except for the Sea Pines pass).

Eight area juniors are seeded in the all-singles USTA-sanctioned tournament, led by Michelle Green of HHI as the #2 seed in Girls’ 18s. Also seeded are Lindsey Burke, #4 in Girls’ 16s and these with #5 seeding: Jared Woodson, Boys’ 14s; Ksenia Laskutova, Girls’ 12s; Brooke Busby, Girls’ 14s; Ansley Kitchen, Girls’ 16s, and Leyla Erkan and Hayley Carter in Girls’ 18s.

Playoffs in New Orleans

Dream Team 2-0, PDTC 1-0, Topspinners 1-1 After Day One at Southern Mixed Doubles Sectionals

NEW ORLEANS LA (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) – Three Hilton Head Island league teams finished today with an overall 4-1 match record at the Southern Section Mixed Doubles Championships, as the Wexford Dream Team led the way with two victories. Each of the three teams, carrying their South Carolina state titles earned last month, will play two matches Saturday.

The Adult 5.0 Dream Team, captained by Cal Navis, is in a seven-team round robin. The Senior PDTC 8.0s of Captain Tim Arr won their only match today and will be going for the Group II first place lead Saturday. The Senior 7.0 Port Royal Topspinners, captained by Janet Goldin, are 1-1 going into Saturday’s quest for top spot in their group. All category finals will be played Sunday afternoon.

‘Nutty Buddy’ Will Include Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Doubles Nov. 7-9 at PDTC

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – The 14^th annual Wild Wing Café ‘Nutty Buddy’ Tennis Classic will be played Nov. 7-9 at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center, with categories for men’s, women’s and mixed doubles in rated divisions of 2.5 through 5.0 and Open. Entry deadline is Sunday, Nov. 2.

Players are limited to two events, with entry fees of $40 per player for one event and $50 per player if playing in two events. Continental breakfast will be provided Saturday and Sunday and fruit and beverages will included each day with the entry fee.

Wild Wing Café will host a players party on Saturday the 8^th and also is sponsor of the tournament prizes. Ya-gotta-be-there-to-win door prizes will be drawn during the party.

Match will begin Friday morning as needed and run into the evening, with play all day Saturday and finals Sunday. For information, call PD at 785-1152. Look for entry forms at area clubs or reply to this email and we’ll send one to you.

South Carolina’s Rex Maynard To Head Southern Tennis Association

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – South Carolina already has a USTA national presidency in its pocket for 2009 with the elevation of Lucy Garvin of Greenville to that office. Also stepping up the tennis political ladder in ’09 will be Rex Maynard of Belton, who will assume the presidency of the Southern Tennis Association that includes nine Southeastern states.

Maynard has served in a variety of South Carolina tennis offices, including USTA SC presidency and head of the SC Tennis Patrons Foundation. He was an early (and often) promoter of the South Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame in Belton and tournament director of the Wachovia Palmetto Championships, the state’s leading junior tournament there.

Bull, Grubbs To Be Inducted into South Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame

Former tour pro Will Bull of Myrtle Beach and the late Max Wilton Grubbs of Anderson will be inducted into the South Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame at the USTA SC annual banquet Dec. 13 in Myrtle Beach.

Bull was a top-ranked player in South Carolina and competed on the pro tour before settling as a teaching pro in Myrtle Beach. Grubbs was coach of Anderson College tennis and directed the teams to national titles.

The induction ceremony will be the same night as presentation of the state’s individual, event and club awards, including three to Hilton Head Island area tennis activists, at the Marina Inn at Grande Dunes. Here is that list of award honorees:
