(*60s Men’s 2.5 to be played this week with two HHI teams competing)

ISLE OF PALMS SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) – What more needs to be said?! The South Carolina Super Senior State Championships turned into a bash by Hilton Head Island and Coastal Carolina players, as they combined to win nine of 11 contested divisions that wrapped up finals today at Wild Dunes Racquet Club. In one of the two categories that went elsewhere, an HHI team was runnerup and another HHI team placed second to an HHI team champion.

No time yet to check the record books. We’ll leave that to Guinness and the accountants compiling overall won-loss totals.

After sweeping the women’s and men’s 70s categories Saturday, the Sea Pines Country Club 75s got up early today and took three courts for the first-ever state championship in that age division. Captained by Bill Zervoulis, SPCC clinched the two-team division over Lexington’s Topspin Ancients.

Bill Cale’s Long Cove Super Retreads won an early semifinal today, then stepped aside while Barbara Steiger’s Port Royal Senior Moments and Allan Zak’s Port Royal won their finals. The PR Moments took one of those pesky third-set tiebreaks to clinch the 60s Women’s 4.0 championship over the Lowcountry Super Women 2-1. The PR guys, competing as HHI #2, won the 60s Men’s 4.0 final with a pair of straight-setters over Upper Piedmont/Spindle Tree.

The Long Cove ‘treads came back out at high noon and won the 60s Men’s 3.5 final over Grand Strand/Riverfront of Conway 2-1, doing it on straight-set decisions.

Surely a future Trivial Pursuit question will deal with which team was the first Coastal Carolina state champion – the 60s Men’s 3.0 Sun City Court Jesters, captained by Bill Flack. And the tiebreaker question will be which doubles team won two third-set match tiebreaks that clinched the semifinal and final: Alex Tan and Paul Naef. (Some day USTA will report third sets by something other than the idiotic “1-0” result.)

With 28 Hilton Head Island and Coastal Carolina teams are competing and completing play today, the Men’s 2.5s will play this week, with only two teams – Moss Creek and Country Club of Hilton Head.

Here are today’s team results (+ individual results in Saturday championship clinchers) involving HHI and CCTA teams. There are some funky names/spellings/etc. and we’ve tried to follow what’s posted:

HHI Teams Sweep Super Senior 70s State Championships at Wild Dunes

ISLE OF PALMS SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) – Hilton Head Island league teams completed a clean sweep of the 70s division today at the South Carolina Super Senior State Championships at Wild Dunes, Isle of Palms. The HHI teams today won top titles in the Men’s and Women’s 3.0s and Men’s 3.5s, having already won the Women’s 3.5 Friday.

The 60s championships will be on the line Sunday morning and afternoon, with HHI and Coastal Carolina teams in the hunt. The Men’s 4.0 Port Royal and Women’s 4.0 Port Royal Senior Moments are in the early finals. 60s semifinalists include Men’s 3.5 Long Cove Super Retreads, Women’s 3.0 SC Yacht Hot Flashes and Moss Creek Powershots, Women’s 3.5 Dataw Dixies. In addition, the 3.0 Men’s 75 Sea Pines Country Club need just one team win Sunday for that championship in the first year of that division at States.

A Hilton Head Island champion was a certainty in the 70s Men’s 3.0 as HHI #1/Sea Pines Imposters and HHI #1/Spring Lake Cruisers reached the final. The Imposters lived up to the ranking by winning the final 2-1. The 70s Women’s 3.0 Sun City Golden Girls ran the table of their round robin, clinching it with a 2-1 final win over Mid-Carolina’s Ladies of the Lake Plus. In the Men’s 3.5, Indigo Run took that championship in a 2-1 final over Lowcountry’s #1 Seabrook Greys. The Port Royal Killer Bees won the 70s Women’s 3.5 title Friday.

All told, 28 Hilton Head Island and Coastal Carolina teams are competing, including the Men’s 2.5s who will play early next week. In 2003, when the first Super Senior States was held, 48 total teams competed. This year’s championships has 92 (including the 2.5s).

HHI, CCTA Teams 11-0 in Day One of Men’s, Women’s 70s at Super Senior State Championships

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Hilton Head Island and Coastal Carolina team are unbeaten in the first day of the South Carolina Super Senior State Championships at Wild Dunes, Isle of Palms. Match play begins Friday in Super Senior 60s. The 70s will complete in-group play Friday and play finals Saturday; SS60s will run Friday-Sunday.

The SS 60s 2.5 division will not be played until next week. As it turned out, only two local teams entered for States – Moss Creek and Country Club of Hilton Head -- and, since both are from our area, they will face off against each other here in a best-of-three playoff.

Hardeeville Takes a Step Forward With Tennis Carnival

HARDEEVILLE SC (TENNIS E-News) – Thirty kids and adults got a special initiation into the “sport for a lifetime” at a recent tennis festival at the school courts.

Bluffton tennis coordinator and high school coach Bob Brown was joined by Assistant Coach Kristen Kelly and two boys' team players earning Community Service credit - Chris Davis and Brantley Groshan – in conducting the carnival. Volunteers Linda Evans and Jackie Houck were also participated.

If kids and adults signed up, visited a lesson court and a skill court, they were given a free racquet donated by Julie Jilly and the Professional Tennis Registry. USTA South Carolina’s Graham Cox donated prizes. “Hardeeville has four nice hard courts which are not being used much,” Brown said. “We are sure that a follow-up would yield at least a Saturday morning beginner program to start. I challenged

About 10 ninth and tenth graders to ask athletic director/principal to start a high school team tennis program.

The event was sponsored by Public Tennis Inc. and funded by a grant from the Sun City Tennis Club.

Yet to be decided: Whose jurisdiction Hardeeville/Ridgeland comes under for developing tennis programs, leagues and such.
