Singles Titles Go to HHIslanders in Daufuskie Island Adult Championships

DAUFUSKIE ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) –Daufuskie Island Adult Championships dodged raindrops and yucky weather Saturday and today at Haig Point Club. Hilton Head Islanders Vic Carlsen and Ron Garrow won championships in their singles divisions. The USTA-sanctioned tournament had 35 entrants.

Agee, Whitlow in Finals, Other Locals Advance in $25,000 PTR Championships

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – HHI area tennis teaching pros advanced through the draws today in the $25,000 PTR Championships at Van Der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club. Denise Agee and Keith Whitlow are in the finals of their divisions and top seeds Tom Jilly and Pat Child have advanced to semifinals in their age categories. Matches are open free to spectators.

The PTR International Symposium sessions will continue daily through Friday morning. The Tennis Trade Show Wednesday and Thursday will be open free to general spectators. To access the schedule, go to http://www.ptrtennis.com. For additional information, call 785-7244.

HHI Players Top Seeds In $25,000 PTR Championships at Shipyard

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Tennis teaching pros from around the world have been arriving the last few days for the annual the Professional Tennis Registry International Symposium and $25,000 PTR Championships at Van Der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club. Tournament play is set to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday. Admission is free to spectators.

Hilton Head Island pros Tom Jilly and Pat Child are #1 seeds in the Men’s 45 and 55 Singles, respectively. Child and fellow local pro Keith Whitlow, #2 in 60 singles, are top seeds in the Men’s 55 Doubles. Denise Agee and Jolene Watanabe-Giltz are #1 seeds in Women’s 35 Doubles. Steve Brady of Bluffton is #2 seed in Men’s 50 Singles.

The International Symposium sessions got under way this evening and will run daily through next Friday morning. To access the schedule, go to http://www.ptrtennis.com. For information on activity open to the public, call 785-7244. A tennis trade show will be included in the events.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – The 4.0 Women’s Doubles final was reported incorrectly in the Palmetto Dunes Resort Classic. Donna Bierschenk and Sue Carpenter of Bluffton defeated Shannon Lurkin and Ann O’Brien of HHI 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 in that exciting final Sunday.

Counting points played in good faith: All points played in good faith stand. For example, if after losing a point, a player discovers that the net is four inches too high, the point stands. Very Busy Days as PD Resort Classic Cuts a Break From the Weather

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – With 143 players from 10 states in the draws, the Palmetto Dunes Resort Classic got the weather it needed to get going Saturday and continue today. Matches went to no ad scoring for the first two sets and then a 10-point tiebreak for the third if needed. Today, the format went back to regular scoring for semis and finals except for round robins which stayed at the earlier format.

Tournament Director Jackie Reynecke has a message for you:

“There were 74 matches played Saturday to get caught up and back on a semi-final/final (today). I would like to let all the players know who much we appreciated their understanding and cooperation in re-doing the entire draw on Friday afternoon/evening, then facing reduced formats on Saturday through the semifinal/final rounds and dealing with some court issues from the not so great weather this week.

USTA COMMENT 18.6: In a non-officiated match, the receiver or the receiver’s partner may call foot faults after all efforts (warning the server and attempting to locate an official) have failed and the foot faulting is so flagrant as to be clearly perceptible from the receiver’s side.
