Round Robin Continues Sunday

Topspinners Brightest HHI Light at 2-0 in SC State Mixed Doubles Championships in Charleston

CHARLESTON SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- Mixed doubles always is a tough road for Hilton Head Island league teams and today was no exception at the USTA League South Carolina State Championships.

A 3-0 win this morning by the Senior 7.0 Wexford Topspinners was the best performance of the HHIs in preliminary round robin group play that continues Sunday. The Spinners came back in the afternoon, taking two third-set match tiebreaks for a 2-1 team victory. They need to win their one Sunday match to advance to Monday's semifinals.

The 5.0 Adult Wexford Wildcats are 1-1 at day's end and must win Sunday to have a chance of advancing to Monday finals. Likewise for the Wexford 6.0 Adult, winner 2-1 in a morning match but on the short end of a 3.0 midday encounter. The 8.0 Adult SCYacht Anglers dropped a 2-1 match in the morning, then recouped with a strong 3-0 sweep in the afternoon.

The HHI #2 Wexford Seniors took their morning match 2-1 in 6.0 and face two matches Sunday. The Bluffton 7.0 Adult won 2-1 on a deciding third-set match tiebreak late this afternoon and go for two more wins Sunday.

Group leaders, plus a few wildcards, will advance to Monday semifinals and finals. Champions will advance to Southern Sectionals later this fall.
