Golly gee … just when he writes a nice tennis story about Missy Malool's engaging experiences at the Olympics, they kick him upstairs. We had realized we forgot to say "nice story" at the time it ran and were about to do so when The Island Packet elevated Sports Editor Jeff Kidd to editor of the Beaufort Gazette. The Packet and the Gazette are no-so-slowly heading to becoming one newspaper, what with merging of staffs and coverage areas and press runs and stuff.

Adult Team Tennis Setting Up for Fall Season; 7.5 Added to This Year's Format

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (from Chaplin Chatter) -- USA Adult Team Tennis is organizing for its fall season that will begin in late October and run through middle January and again will culminate in a season-ending District Championship and player's party. New this year in the mixed doubles team play will be a fifth court to include play at the 7.5 combo level as well an increase to a 12-game pro set format.

Public Tennis Inc., with Ray Hardy as coordinator, has set each team match with mixed doubles in 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0 and 7.5. All games will count toward the match, for a total of 60 points up for grabs. The team with the most games won at the end of the season will be #1 seed at the South Carolina District Championships.

Cost for an individual to register for a team will be $34 plus a $3.05 TennisLink fee. That includes all court fees and balls. Proceeds from the league will benefit the PTI program fund, as well as the new court funds at Bluffton and HHI's Chaplin Public Tennis Center.

Anyone interested in captaining a team at one of the clubs should contact Hardy at rayhardy36@aol.com. Last season Spanish Wells won the District Championship. If you are interested in being added to the roster for a Chaplin team, contact Tim Ryan at chaplinroundrobin@hotmail.com.

CCTA Gets Under Way Wetly

Fall Super Senior Results Will Count in '08 Year-End Ratings

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- All of this fall's matches played in the Super Senior Leagues (except the 75s) will be included in the 2008 year-end ratings which will be published sometime in late November or early December. Local coordinators report that there will be no disqualifications during the course of the season for any player possessing a computer rating. Players who have just self-rated could be disqualified if a grievance is filed. Originally the fall results had been carried over to the next year because of amount of time necessary in compiling records. Technology advances; so reporting time is reduced, thus allowing for the complete year's matches to be included in year-end ratings.

New this year is the ruling that any benchmark player (played in advanced championships like States) who is bumped up will have to wait a year before being allowed to appeal the "promotion".

MEANWHILE IN RAIN CITY, the new Coastal Carolina Tennis Association got its historic first matches played last week -- mostly. The Men's and Women's 3.5 matches scheduled for Sun City courts were rained out. Matches on Dataw and Callawassie Islands the same afternoon were played. Figures.

Thanks to Ernie Clark, senior coordinator of CCTA, here is a shorter step form in the "How To … " series presented by TENNIS E-News. This is how to get to results of your team matches and other:

1.Go to http://usta.com, then

2. Look to the right and select TennisLink, then

3. Select Leagues, then

4. Enter your USTA number and click on Go, then
5. Click on the team name you want, then

6. You can select Match Schedule, then

7. Select the Match ID # for the one you want.

TennisLink Decides Who Goes to States

You Just Can't Cut It Much Closer: Adult Mxd Teams Finish Win Same Won-Loss Records

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- 'Tis the way it's s'posed to be … right down to the wire and then some. The USTA League 7.0 and 8.0 Mixed Doubles finished the schedule with two teams tied atop each standings. TennisLink records determined teams going to South Carolina State Championships.

In Adult 7.0, Chaplin Heat and Wexford Serves & Curves were in a dead heat at 5-1. Both teams stood at 13-5 in courts won/lost and in sets lost at 13. The Heat, however, became the first Chaplin Park Mixed team to advance to States by losing only 156 games, compared to the Wexford 163.

In Adult 8.0, the Bluffton Bangers came up with a three-court win in the final match to not only tie Port Royal Mixed Sundevils at 7-1, but to take the category first place with a 19-5 courts won/lost record, compared to the Sundevils' 17-7.

That completes the summer mixed doubles season, setting up teams heading to States Sept. 13-15 in Charleston.

Here are the league standings as of Sunday the 24th:

Adult Mixed Doubles

5.0 -- 2 teams -- 6/29 to 7/27 -- Wexford Dream Team in lead at 3-1; championship clinched

6.0 -- 8 teams -- 6/14 to 8/23 -- Wexford Ball and Chain in lead at 8-0; championship clinched

7.0 -- 7 teams -- 6/21 to 8/16 -- Chaplin Heat in lead at 5-1; Heat clinch title on fewer games lost

8.0 -- 5 teams -- 6/15 to 8/24 -- Bluffton Bangers, Port Royal Mixed Sundevils tied at 7-1; Bangers clinch title on courts won

9.0 -- 1 team -- South Beach Slammers

Senior Mixed Doubles

Now we can appreciate George Bush's problem: how to cope with two war zones. Like, do we cover HHI tennis only and ignore Coastal Carolina? Should we cover both? If we try that, do we have the resources (energy) to do so? To cover both, should we cut back on playing tennis (and golf)? As Yul Brynner sang: "Is a puzzlement."

And nothing like rain bands from an impending hurricane to welcome today's start of the fall tennis season and inauguration (baptism?!?) of the Coastal Carolina TA. Stay tuned.

Entry Deadline Sept. 5
