Net Cords, Dirt Ballers To Meet in 3.0 Final; Interclub To Split in '08-'09 Season

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Palmetto Dunes Net Cords are the winners of 3.0 Senior Men's Interclub Flight A and Sun City Dirt Ballers are winners of Flight B and the two will meet TBA for the championship next week.

With Interclub schedule-knocking against the start of the USTA League spring season, I-club coordinator Dick Sonberg has certified the flight champs and canceled the remainder of the regular schedule. "Captains of teams with remaining matches may play the matches if both desire," Sonberg said, but results will not change the league standings.

Looking to the 2008-09 season, Sonberg announced that he will be coordinating matches only for teams on Hilton Head Island (including Moss Creek) to coincide with the changes in the USTA format beginning in late summer. "Teams from off-Island must organize their own Interclub league next fall," he said. Will the respective champions meet at The Bridge for a face-off in January '09? Stay tuned.

Wayne Local League Coordinator

Moss Creek Zips Onto HHI; Split's Name Is "Coastal Carolina Tennis Association"

HARDEEVILLE SC (TENNIS E-News) -- In prompting the first Hardeeville placename in E-News history, Coastal Carolina Tennis Association was chosen the name of the new USTA League playing area, Moss Creek was dropped from the area coverage and Jerry Wayne was elected Local League Coordinator.

Meeting in Palmetto Electric's New River Community Room, Hardeeville, some 20 representatives from That Side Of The Bridge began by accepting TSOTB's Moss Creek pleas not to be part of that area as had been decided in the inaugural Jan. 12 organizational session. HHI Local League Coordinator Jackie Reynecke conducted the session.

Moss Creek reps argued that it was part of HHI before the new area was even developed, adding its proximity to the island and "our kids go to Hilton Head Island schools". Final motion was that if it has a Hilton Head Island zipcode, it belongs in HHI leagues.

The assembled turned to the task of choosing a name, going with the most popular of those emailed prior to the meeting: Coastal Carolina Tennis Association (CCTA).

That done, reps considered candidates to become the CCTA's "Jackie Reynecke" -- Local League Coordinator of the new area: Terry Logan of Beaufort, Ernie Clark of Sun City, Jerry Wayne of St. Helena/Dataw and Bunny Wardlaw of Hilton Head Island were presented. By secret ballot, the winner was Wayne, who served more than 20 years with the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association including several terms as its president.

The CCTA now settles into choosing level coordinators for the 2008 Combo and Super Senior seasons that will be the first under the split from Hilton Head Island (and Moss Creek).

On a related issue, Reynecke reported that, although some Walterboro players compete in CCTA and HHI leagues, Walterboro teams have chosen to remain in the Lowcountry (Charleston) playing district.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News via Bob Brown) -- The Wexford Warriors clinched the 12-and-Under Beginner race and the Racquet Club Villains won the 18s and 14s Intermediate divisions as Junior Team Tennis finished its regular league season.

Plea Put to Council Forum

Goal of More Courts Will Need Significant Work and Support from Players

BLUFFTON SC (TENNIS E-News) -- A delegation of Bluffton area tennis players made it clear to the mayor and Town Council and the mayor and Town Council made it clear to the delegation of Bluffton area tennis players: Building a significant batch of tennis courts at the new Buckwalter Tract would be a good thing, but it will only happen if lots of support is shown by the tennis community.

The projection of 13 courts at the site was backed Saturday morning by players and organizers at a council workshop. Bluffton High School Coach Bob Brown and a half dozen or so others pointed to the lack of and overcrowding of the existing public courts and cited the area's growth increasing demand.

Mayor Frank Johnston said the group should go to Beaufort County and state rec boards with the campaign. One of the council members suggested an electronic campaign or petition drive among tennis players. The ball appears to be in the court of the tennis community. Volunteers wanting to help with the campaign should contact Brown at 290-2833 or by email at randdbrown@hargray.com.
