Napsters vs. Terminators in PTI Adult Team District Championship Sunday

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Top-seed Long Cove Napsters and Tim’s Terminators will clash Sunday for the PTI Adult Team Tennis District Championships. Matchtime is 1 p.m. at Long Cove for the all-mixed-doubles format play.

60 & Older Team Play

CCTA Planning Super Senior Mixed Doubles League During Spring Season

BEAUFORT SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Prior to now, most Super Seniors local league play has been during the Fall season, but that will change this Spring. Coastal Carolina Tennis Association is adding Super Seniors Mixed Doubles that will coincide with the USTA League Spring season.

CCTA’s Sally Harvey (sharv@islc.net.) is accepting reservations for teams for the league that is being coordinated statewide by USTA South Carolina. Deadline for registering a team is Feb. 10. All players must be 60 or older by the end of this year.

Goal: Ready for League Season

Court Resurfacing To Begin at Cordillo, Chaplin Tennis Centers

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Chaplin Public Tennis Center is set for its first court resurfacing and the public court complex on Cordillo Park also is getting retopped. The project is hoped to be completed in time for the Spring league season.

Beginning Monday, Court Surfaces Inc. of Jacksonville FL will start repairing and resurfacing the Cordillo courts, Frank Soule of Island Recreation Association reports. It should take about a week to complete. On Monday the 26th, work will begin on Chaplin’s four older courts – also to take three to five days to complete.

Weather will be a major factor, Soule said, in the completion schedule. “I apologize for any convenience this may cause. This is all part of a routine maintenance. We appreciate all the help and support the tennis community provides the Association.”

Information is available by calling Island Rec at 681-7273.

3 HHI Teams Set for Southern Section Combo Championships in Mobile

TENNIS E-News & the X#@%& AOL

The TENNIS E-News/AOL WarsThe 2-year truce has broken down.

Please excuse us if, on the mention of AOL, we break into profanity.

(Not on AOL? Well, you are receiving this in case you know someone on AOL who gets E-News or but doesn’t anymore for no apparent reason of theirs.)

AOLers and interested parties:

Your indulgence is requested in another effort to uncover the reason TENNIS E-News is not getting to readers who are on AOL.

Or at least not getting to many who are on AOL.

Like the email we received last weekend: “We haven’t gotten your E-News since the first of the year.”

Or the couple who greeted us in the Healthy Days parking lot: “We don’t get your emails anymore. We haven’t gotten them for quite a while.”

So this is an experimental email aimed at those on AOL.

ANYONE NOT ON AOL NEED NOT REPLY. We hope you will, however, read and offer any appropriate helpful information.

If you are on AOL and got this, we hope you will let us know that. If you don’t, we can only assume you didn’t receive it. If you are on AOL and are receiving a couple TENNIS E-News issues a week, we know you have something different from those AOLers who aren’t receiving it.

You may assume we are groping at straws here. You also may assume that’s the editorial “we” and “we” really mean me.

“We” appreciate your help.

Dennis.

But No Mulligans Allowed During the Spring USTA Season

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – What are you to do with a guy like Dick Boyce? How lazy can one get? Golf is bad enough. But finishing a couple holes in only one stroke is the height of unexerciseness.

Yeh, he did two holes-in-one in the same 18-hole round at Sea Pines Country Club.

Next thing he’ll be coming up with two aces in the same match while playing for the Sea Pines (CC) Senior Men in the Senior 3.5 league. Doc Hoffman, who was in the two holes-in-one foursome, is his Seniors team captain and would expect that.

Audible or visible calls. No matter how obvious it is to a player that the opponent's ball is out, the opponent is entitled to a prompt audible or visible out call.

Opponent's calls questioned. When a player genuinely doubts an opponent's call, the player may ask: "Are you sure of your call?" If the opponent reaffirms that the ball was out, the call shall be accepted. If the Opponent acknowledges uncertainty, the opponent loses the point. There shall be no further delay or discussion.

Spectators never to make calls. A player shall not enlist the aid of a spectator in making a call. No spectator has a part in the match.

Reaffirming Spring League Rule

Third Set Will Be Played Out. Period! No Match Tiebreaks or Captains Could Face Grievance

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Spring season USTA Leagues on HHI will play out all third sets. And that is that!

Local League Coordinator Jackie Reynecke expanded on her directions from last week’s team captain meetings.

“I just want to … make sure that we are all on the same page about our playing format for 2009,” she emailed. “I know that we said at the meetings that the format is to play out the third set and a super tiebreak is not an option.

“If at any point in this league season you find out that in your division something different was played, inform me immediately and I will myself grieve against both captains. Of course, since that process goes through a committee, then the penalty, if the grievance is considered valid, will be determined by that committee.”

The third-set match tiebreak will continue to be used at state, section and national championships.

NEW AGAIN IN 2009: Two years ago TENNIS E-News ran a well-received series of excerpts from "The Code, The Players' Guide for Unofficiated Matches". Think we need a repeat? Lest we forget, it begins right now.

Courtesy. Tennis is a game that requires cooperation and courtesy from all participants. Make tennis a fun game by praising your opponents' good shots and by not:

> conducting loud postmortems after points

> complaining about shots like lobs and drop shots

> embarrassing a weak opponent by being overly gracious or condescending

> losing your temper, using vile language, throwing your racket or slamming a ball in anger or

> sulking when you are losing.

If you have a question or situation you would like to have addressed, email banana@hargray.com separately and we will try to help.
