National 12s Champion Hayley Carter Wins 14s in BullFrog Southern at Van der Meer

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – The boys went true to seeding. Not so the girls. The Bullfrog Southern Section Designated 12s and 14s wrapped up Monday at Van der Meer Tennis Center as #4 seed Hayley Carter of Hilton Head Island won the 14s and #2 Whitney Williams of Alexandria LA took the 12s.

Carter, just off winning the National 12s in Florida, eliminated #1 seed Reeree Li of Waxhaw NC 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the Monday morning semifinals, then came back in the afternoon to defeat #5 Hannah King of Dunwoody GA 7-6(3), 6-4 in the final.

Williams defeated #4 Jamie Rogers of Cary NC 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-4 for the 12s championship. In Boys’ 14s, #1 Becker O'Shaughnessey of Macon GA downed #2 Kassim Alani of Chapel Hill NC 6-2, 6-3 and the Boys’ 12s #1 Brent Lett of Elgin SC defeated #2 Wood Benton of Spartanburg SC 6-2, 6-1.

Two HHI juniors lost in early main draw rounds but rolled up wins in consolation matches to advance to that final. In the semifinals, unseeded Jack O'Koniewski defeated (5) Jayanth Chintham of Cumming GA 6-2, 6-1 and #9 Jared Woodson defeated #5 Adam Elliget of Summerville SC 6-2, 6-1. No consolation finals were played.

Meanwhile in Greenville, the Boys' and Girls' 16s and 18s were being played. Best results of HHI players there were by Michelle Green who got to the 18s quarterfinals and Jeri Reichel, who lost in that Round of 16.

Results Flopped in Women’s 120s

Downpour Prompts BillyBob Final To Give It Up Until October

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- "Well, not two minutes before the scheduled start” to the 120s Mixed final of the 24th annual BillyBob Century Cup Doubles Monday the skies released the rain that was threatening all day, thus postponing the match until … October. Eh?

The rest of the tournament ended Sunday, despite late Saturday afternoon rain that pushed back the 120s and other draws. Tournament Director Michael O’Keefe consulted with finalists Marilyn Yates/Tony Shinto and Anne O'Brien/John Brummitt, discovered that both guys would be off-island for some time and all involved decided to play the final in October.

Also, a flipflopping (not involving politicians) led to an incorrect result posted in the Women’s 120s. That championship was won by Carolyn Shipka and Phyllis Spehlmann 6-1, 6-0.

Then too, in the Men’s 120, Ralph Huff and Jeff Wilson have been declared champions by default. It was discovered Monday that a finals opponent was rating-ineligible to play that division.

Okay. Ready to roll into the BillyBob Silver Anniversary in April 2009.
