Ratings Not Out Yet; Promised Monday

Hellooooooooooooooooo, USTA South Carolina ……………..

Helloooooooooooooooo, Southern Tennis ……………………..

Helloooooooooooooooooo, USTA National ……………………

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Okay. We know the USTA League 2008 year-end ratings will be posted Monday. We know because the posting was promised by then.

What we don’t know (and have many players asking) is exactly what league results go into the new ratings – the ones that will dictate on which levels we will be playing through the entire 2009.

Please. Here is a simple list. Someone of authority must be able to “X” the appropriate league seasons that apply so that we have it all in one place for reference. Please do so by return email because once those ratings hit the web the questions will be flying. Thank you.

Those marked with an “X” are the results that figure into the year-end 2008 ratings. Please add if any other results are included:

Not Out Yet, But …

Players Ready? Play … or At Least Get Ready To Appeal … Unless You’re a Benchmark

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – A lot of players and especially team captains are holding their collective breaths with one hand on a computer mouse and the other on a favorite good luck charm. Still hanging in netherspace is approval/denial of the South Carolina-voted out-of-area rule change, while the hourly wait goes on for posting online of the 2008 year-end player ratings.

What to do.

Well, nothing much if you are a benchmark player, i.e., someone who has advanced to USTA League state, section or national championships. If you aren’t bumped up to a higher rating, no sweat. If you are “promoted”, no sweat because you can’t appeal your rating for one year from date of the rating. That’s new this year and is likely to reconfigure bunches of teams everywhere.

If you are NOT a benchmark player, you might still be holding your breath, but if bumped up you will have the right to appeal … and it’s about as easy and quick as you can expect. If your name is on the bumped-up list, you follow the “Automatic Appeals” procedure found on http://www.sctennis.com. At the top of the webpage, select “Ratings/Appeals” and simply follow directions. (If you can follow directions, it is simple. If you can’t, ask your grandkid for help.)

Yes, you can appeal to raise your rating as well as to lower it. Good luck.

It’ll Be Here Before You Know It

League Pre-Registration Begins for Spring Season – TAHHI and CCTA

HILTON HEAD ISLAND (TENNIS E-News) – It’s the start of the holiday season but, for USTA League captains, it’s also start of Serious Season pre-registration for the Spring schedule that will begin in late January.

Pre-reg comes first -- submitting your intention to captain a team along with rating, site, etc., information. Next comes the issuing of team numbers that each captain uses to enter roster names (minimum of six names to start). Then comes scheduling.

Deadlines and team guidelines may vary from level to level. Here are two sets of information – one from a Tennis Association of Hilton Head Island level coordinator and one from a Coastal Carolina Tennis Association coordinator.

Tennis Association of Hilton Head Island -- Pre-Registration Form Attached to This Email

Excerpted from email to captains by Senior Men’s Coordinator Don Grider:

Submit attached form COMPLETELY and return to me (dmgrider@roadrunner.com) by Friday, Dec. 19. Ratings should be posted by Dec, 1. No appeals by any benchmark players; others will appeal by using online format. Nature of inter-district player eligibility (TAHHI-CCTA) should be known within two weeks.

Please keep on file a record of the below listed items.

1. Senior roster size maximum 14 players.

2. The third set will be played out at all senior men's levels

3. Dates and site of the state tournament – Hilton Head Island - May 9-11, 2009

4. Days of Play - same as last year (3.0 Monday, 4.0 Tuesday, 3.5 Wednesday. Rain Out Make up Day- Friday)

5. Probable Captain's Meeting - First Week in January.

6. Probable starting date of play - Week of January 26 or February 2 (this will be determined by the number of teams in each level.)

Coastal Carolina Tennis AssociationPre-Registration Form Attached to This Email

This is excerpted from Men’s Coordinator Ernie Clark’s email to captains: For the 2009 season, roster size will remain at maximum of 16 players for Adult teams and 14 players for Senior teams. If need be, contact me (tennisracquets@yahoo.com) regarding allowed "below-rated" players. Match day for Adult teams is Saturday and match day for Senior teams is Monday. If court or team availability is a problem for these days, please note this on the "Match Day & Time" line of your pre-registration form, so appropriate scheduling adjustments can be made prior to the season. Also be sure to verify court availability with your tennis pro or court director.

DATES: Dec. 1 -- ratings are expected to be on TennisLink ; Dec. 15 - Pre-Registration form deadline with team name with facility and captain info; Dec. 31 - Minimum registration of 6 players ; Early January - Captain's Meeting , time and place TBA

For further information, contact Jerry Wayne, CCTA Local League Coordinator, ccta10s@yahoo.com. Women contact Vivian Wayne at cctawomen@yahoo.com. For later in the season when mixed doubles comes up, contact Sally Harvey sharv@islc.net.

Moss Creek Wins Super Senior States 2.5 Championship; Sectionals Next??

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – With more cuts and slices than you’ll find in a Publix meat case, the Moss Creek Raging Bulls won the South Carolina Super Senior 60 Men’s 2.5 State Championship Friday afternoon at Sun City, ending the playoffs that saw Hilton Head Island and Coastal Carolina teams winning 10 of 12 contested state divisions.

Ironically, Moss Creek, lobbying early this year for inclusion in the HHI leagues, ended up in a combined division because numbers were lacking for separate leagues. All 2.5s played under CCTA. The Raging Bulls of HHI thus won their first championship under the CCTA wing. Moss Creek was the CCTA #2 team and won Friday to take the deciding match in a best-of-three from #1 Country Club of Hilton Head. While the rest of the state playoffs were last weekend at Wild Dunes, the 2.5s had only two entrants and the matches were played here.

The Raging Bulls will be South Carolina’s representative at the Southern Section Championships Mar. 20-22 in Pelham AL, providing some other of the eight states in Southern produces a 2.5 champion.

Champions and players in the Super Senior States should keep an eye on www.sctennis.com for the championship story and photos of winning teams as well as action shots of play. Yes, you and your forehand may be on the Internet. Scary!!!

Here are Friday’s final match results:
CCTA #2/Moss Creek Raging Bulls 3, CCTA #1/Country Club of Hilton Head Court Jesters 0

Ct. 1 -- Doug West/Charles Dattelbaum def. Imants Zeidlickis/Roger Rathbun 6-1, 6-3
Ct. 2 -- Wayne Effron/Bob Davis def. John Nowacek/Stuart Enscoe 6-1, 6-2
Ct. 3 -- David Teschner/Alan Calderon def. James Brissenden/Alan Bikson 4-6, 6-3, 1-0

The complete rundown of Super Senior State Champions from Wild Dunes and here looks like this:

The Lady Seahawks lost only one match at the state championship -- the #5 singles -- in pulling out their 6-1 win over JL Mann to clinch the 3AAA title. The High School Leagues end at State and there is no national or regional title. This year’s team had only three seniors and is looking to be back at the state championships again next year.

Deciding Best-of-three

2 Teams Go for Super Senior States 2.5 Championship Friday

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) –The Moss Creek Raging Bulls took two third-set tiebreaks on the way to a 3-0 win in match #1, but the Country Club of Hilton Head came back with a couple straight-setters to win match #2 in the 60 Men’s 2.5 South Carolina Super Senior State Championships. While the rest of the state playoffs were last weekend at Wild Dunes, the 2.5s had only two entrants – both from the Coastal Carolina league – so a best-of-three round was schedule here.

After splitting the first two matches on a home-and-home basis, the final match is set for Friday at 2:30 p.m. on neutral courts: Sun City Tennis Center. Like the 3.0 through 4.0 Super Seniors, the winner will be South Carolina’s representative at the Southern Section Championships Mar. 20-22 in Pelham AL.
