Notice to TAHHI USTA Spring League Captains:

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REGISTER ON TENNISLINK BEFORE DEC. 28.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – With many team numbers out for the USTA League spring season, that’s the blunt message for Tennis Association of HHI teams … unless the team/player would like to be in a league, say, in Charleston or Columbia.

The latter is a definite possibility if a local captain or player attempts to register for a roster before TennisLink opens for our local leagues on Dec. 28. Before that date, TennisLink’s software will search for any league whose registration already is open, like, say, Greenville. The commute to matches will be a challenge.

Specifics and instructions on how to register will be in the next issue of TENNIS E-News. You have better things to putz with between now and then anyhow. Enjoy the holidays.

It’s must be That Time of Year. With 1,200 of our closest tennis friends on our own plaxoreunionbook, we need someone to explain (23 words of less) what value any of those things would add to our life … or not.

To B or not to B

You owe it to your local and state coordinators to at least … (see below)

TENNIS E-News

Dec. 06, 2008 Vol. VII, No. 134
South Carolina Tennis 2006 Media Award Winner
Hilton Head Island SC

Most players that have a ‘B’ try to appeal anyway and find out that they can't. So tell them to try first. TennisLink lets them know immediately if they can appeal. -- Mary Goins, USTA SC director of leagues

Benchmarks and Benchmarks

The Ratings – After a Week of Sinking In, the Roster Shuffling Begins

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Despite a year of warnings, it still came as quite a shock for the number of “benchmarked” USTA League players who have been booted up a rating level. Likewise, the point that a benchmark player cannot appeal a rating upgrade for one year.

After a couple days of dust settling, here are a few points to highlight:

-- ’08 year-end ratings came from a player’s rating at the start of the year, plus results in the ’08 spring senior and adult local league, district (state) and section championships, the summer mixed doubles local season and fall’s super senior local season. Not counted in the ratings: ’07 super senior local, district, section, national championships; combo local and advanced seasons; mixed doubles and super senior district (state) playoffs.

-- Any player advancing beyond the local season schedule is designated a benchmark “B”. That player cannot appeal for a year. A benchmark is not allowed to appeal to have a rating lowered or raised.

-- A player whose team was involved in a local playoff to determine which teams went to Districts (States) is designated a “BF”, although only “B” appears after the name on TennisLink. A “BF” player is able to appeal. The “BF” is something only TennisLink uses, explains Mary Goins, USTA SC director of leagues.

-- Matches played at district (state), section and national level carry more weight than local league results.

-- Any player who thinks he/she has been designated a benchmark incorrectly should notify Goins A.S.A.P. at mggoins@charter.net.

HOW TO APPEAL YOUR RATING Go to http://www.sctennis.com. At the top of the webpage, select “Ratings/Appeals” and follow directions. Entering your USTA membership number is the quickest way. If using any other method, be sure to insert your USTA number. If going to “Find a Rating” on the TennisLink main page; enter your USTA number in the top box; your name and rating comes up and beside it are clickable blue words that say “appeal rating”. This does not come up when you are looking up ratings by name; only by individual USTA #. If you can’t work by either method, email us and we’ll try to help.

An appealing email from Senior Men’s Coordinator Don Grider to State and Section officials:

“From the Hilton Head (Island) Senior and Super Senior Men's teams I have 49 benchmark players who were upgraded to the next level. Of these, 18 are players over the age of 70 who were upgraded from 3.0 to 3.5. Of this number, four are 75-78; three are 79 and one is 80. They cannot appeal this rating for one year.

“By the time some of them can get back to a 3.0 (where most should be), they could be on Cloud Nine carrying St. Peter (heaven only knows if he is a 3.5!!) in a doubles match!!”

You owe it to your local and state coordinators to at least go to http://www.usta.com and select TennisLink, then Leagues, then (top right) NTRP Rating Help and then “Understanding Your Year End Rating”. It’s a bit “soupy” but listen closely.

Finding the Ratings

TENNIS E-News

Dec. 02, 2008 Vol. VII, No. 133
South Carolina Tennis 2006 Media Award Winner
Hilton Head Island SC

Be Sure To Check ‘Rating Type’

Okay. The Ratings Are Posted. Here’s How You Find ‘Em

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – The 2008 year-end ratings are posted for all to see on TennisLink, and what you’ll discover is that quite a few ’08 USTA League teams will be unrecognizable in ’09 if in existence at all. Some had most of their roster uprated.

First off, here is information as handed down by league officials as to what results went into the year-end rating. Applicable results to determine the ratings came from the following:

2008 Senior and Adult local season

2008 Senior and Adult District (State) and Sectional (Southern) Championships

2008 Mixed Doubles local season

2008 Super Senior Fall local season

Not included in the calculations, as you may have observed: Combo local season and advanced championships in Combo, Mixed Doubles and Super Seniors.

Most important, though, is YOU. Here’s how you find your rating … or anyone else’s:

Go to http://www.usta.com. Select “TennisLink” at the top right and then “Leagues” and, on the next main page at the right, “Find a Rating”. On the page that comes up, you have several options. Type in your name and select “GO” and you get your gender (in case you didn’t know), your city and state, your year-end rating, your year-end rating date (should be 12/31/2008) and, most important, your rating type.

The key describes the various rating types. If yours says “B” for “benchmark”, you cannot appeal for one year. If you think the “benchmark” designation is incorrect, you should notify state coordinator Mary Goins A.S.A.P. at mggoins@charter.net.

To find ratings for an entire team, enter the team number from the appropriate ’08 season. It will list the team’s complete roster with all player information as above. Also, you can go to “Drilldown Search” to find, for example, all HHI 3.5 Women. After clicking “Go”, select “2008”, then Southern, then South Carolina, then Hilton Head (Will they ever make it Hilton Head Island?), then Female, then 3.5 and Search.

HOW TO APPEAL YOUR RATING – Again, if you are a “benchmark” player, you can’t appeal for a year. If not a “B”, it’s about as easy and quick as you can expect. Go to http://www.sctennis.com. At the top of the webpage, select “Ratings/Appeals” and simply follow directions. Note that we used the words “easy” and “simply” advisedly. If you can’t work it, email us and we’ll try to help. Let the fun begin.

In answer to our earlier plea to officialdom, here is the response. Those marked with an “X” are the results that figure into the year-end 2008 ratings:

[ ] Super Senior Fall 2007 Local Season

[ ] Super Senior Fall 2007 District (State) Championships

[ ] Super Senior Fall 2007 Southern Championships (played in March ’08)

[ ] Super Senior Fall 2007 National Championships (played in April ’08)

[ X ] Spring League Adult & Senior Local Season

[ X ] Spring League Adult & Senior District (State) Championships

[ ] Super Senior Combo Local Season

[ X ] Adult & Senior Mixed Doubles Local Season

[ ] Adult & Senior Combo Local Season

[ ] Adult & Senior District (State) Mixed Doubles Championships

[ ] Adult, Senior & Super Senior District (State) Combo Championships

[ X ] Super Senior Fall 2008 Local Season

[ ] Super Senior Fall 2008 District (State) Championships

Multiple Team Play at Same Level OK

It's Official: Out-of-Area Rule Deleted; You Can Play Where You Want With No District Approval

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – The USTA League "out-of-area" rule is history. The regulation that could have restricted players living in one district from playing in another was voted out two weeks ago by South Carolina coordinators, pending final approval from the Southern Section level which came Monday. Also approved was the rule that any South Carolina player can play on any other SC team even on the same level in the same season.

HHI Local League Coordinator Jackie Reynecke explained that the rule change means a player may play at the same NTRP level in the same division (adult or senior) on teams in separate local leagues in SC during the same season. However, she added, that player progressing past local league to State Championships could play on only one team. Players could still play on more than one adult or one senior team at different levels.
