PLAY OF THE DAY – It’s the VacaCo finals at Shipyard. Men’s 60 Doubles 3rd set. A smash from team Iannuzzi/Young bounces the ball over opposing team Filligim/Harwell, clearing the fence toward the Pro Shop. Out races a spectator – Doug Luba’s 6-year-old Golden Retriever Cimber … uninstructed pouncing on the ball in the grass, picking it up, trotting purposefully around the fence and across the court and “handing” it to Young. PLAY OF THE DAY.

Play Ends Monday

PD Sr. Net Jets, Port Royal Win Combo State Championships

CHARLESTON SC (TENNIS E-NEWS via TennisLink) – Hilton Head Island league teams showed once again that if they are going to win championships, it probably will be in senior categories, as the PD Senior Net Jets took the Senior Women’s 6.5 final and Port Royal captured the Super Senior Men’s 7.5s at the South Carolina Combo State Championships in Charleston.

After the total rainout Friday and scramble to catch up Saturday, today went pretty much as originally scheduled, with rating divisions that were to start Friday finishing semifinals and finals. Divisions that started Saturday will have finals day Monday, concentrated at tournament headquarters site -- Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island.

The PD Senior Net Jets, captained by Patty Diggs, lost a match early but finished in their group #1 spot. The Net Jets proceeded to win semifinals and finals 2-1, with all four court wins coming in third-set match tiebreaks. Diggs and partner Judy Larkin won two of them; Pat Leinberger and Beth Fishburne won a third and Stephanie Rathan and Kay Kern won the clincher in today’s final.

Port Royal’s Super Senior 7.5s, captained by Dave Partington, were in a straight round robin format. They went 3-0, as each team match was won 2-1, with Joe Daniel and Fred Meli teaming for straight-set victories in all three matches.

Of the 18 HHI league teams competing in the championships, only in the Senior Men’s 7.5s did any more finish close to a championship so far. The HHI #2 Long Cove, captained by Ralph Huff, finished its group at 3-0, but lost in the semifinals. HHI #1 Port Royal, captained by Dave Partington, lost an in-group match but got a wild card into the semifinals. Winning ended there, however, as the PRs lost in the final to the Gatewood Misfits 2-1. And, yes, Partington was captain of two teams in the competition.

Because so many of Saturday’s results were not posted until way past our deadline time, here are the complete results of Friday/Saturday (listed at originally scheduled times) and today, plus the Monday schedule:

We’re Not of Much Help Here

Playing and Playing and Playing at Combo State Championships, But ………….

CHARLESTON SC (TENNIS E-NEWS via TennisLink) – They’ve been playing from early morning and into the evening today at the South Carolina Combo State Championships in Charleston. But they just don’t seem to be telling us about it.

With headquarters at Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island, the schedule was washed out all day Friday. It was redone and some of it posted late last night on TennisLink, our source of scores. Teams rained out Friday were sent into three team matches today using the pro-set format. The goal appears to be to get everyone caught up by the end of tonight, so that all will be on the original pre-rain schedule Sunday and Monday.

We guess.

Eighteen Hilton Head Island area league teams are competing in the championships.

Here is the complete schedule involving HHI league teams - keeping in mind that these are the original times and TENNIS E-NEWS has no hint to what was played when. The few scores posted on TennisLink are shown. It’s simply all we have. (Besides, we spent all day subbing for players who went to Charleston for States.) Stay tuned.

Super Senior Teams Lined Up for State Championships Nov. 6-9

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) -- The cast is set, with exception of one match, for HHI and Coastal Carolina league teams that will be heading for the South Carolina State Super Senior Championships Nov. 6-9 at Wild Dunes on Isle of Palms. The one match – to be played Sunday at Port Royal -- holds in the balance the #1 spot in Women's 60s 3.5s.

Men's and Women's 60s, 70s and Men's 75s will be going for state titles and, beyond that, the chance to advance to Southern Sectionals in April 2009. It is the first year of The Split, meaning TAHHI and CCTA leagues each will be sending champions in the respective Men's and Women's 60s 3.0 and 3.5 and Men's 70s. Both area’s Men's 60s 2.5s are bunched under the CCTA flag. Men's and Women's 4.0s from both areas are going under TAHHI's banner. All Men's 75s are likewise under the TAHHI wing.

The SS70s state playoffs will begin Thursday, Nov. 6, with the 60s getting under way on Friday the 7th. The 70s are to finish Saturday the 8th and the 60s on Sunday the 9th.

It's the first year for the 75s going to States. Much like the 60s and 70s, the 75s started with the HHI leagues and are spreading statewide and likely sectionwide. The "younger" brackets now play to national championships, thanks in great part to the start and continued success here.

The number of teams from the HHI leagues eligible to go to States:

Super Senior 60s:

Two Men’s 3.0 One Women’s 3.0

Two Men’s 3.5 Two Women’s 3.5

One Men’s 4.0 One Women’s 4.0

Super Senior 70s

One Men’s 3.0 One Women’s 3.0

One Men’s 3.5 One Women’s 3.5

Super Senior 75s

Three Men’s 3.0

In addition, wild card slots have been allotted for One Women’s 60s 3.0 team and two 4.0 teams, as well as one Men’s 70s 3.0 and one 3.5 team.

From the CCTA leagues:

TENNIS E-NEWS has not received the compete report of the men’s and women’s teams set for States. Stay tuned.

The SS 60s 2.5 division has only two teams for States – Moss Creek and Country Club of Hilton Head -- and, since both are from our area, the teams will face off against each other here in a best-of-three playoff.

Meanwhile, here are the final standings – excepting that one Saturday women’s match:
