Double Down for Senior 3.5 Golden Bear Claws, Adult 5.0 Islanders in Mobile

MOBILE AL (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- It must have been the heat. Or the humidity. Or those damn third-set match super tiebreaks. Or that they played better than we did. Whatever. Hilton Head Island's three entries in the USTA League Southern Section Championships went 2 for 10 in team matches, getting nowhere near advancing to level finals.

Senior Men's 3.5 Indigo Run Golden Bear Claws dropped a 2-1 decision today to finish 1-3 in group, while the Adult 5.0 Men's Hilton Head Islanders lost 3-0 today, ending up at 0-3 for the championships. The Islanders went as South Carolina "B". Charleston's SC "A" team in the 5.0s also went 0-3. Earlier in the week the Adult 2.5 Women's Bluffton HS Alley Cats went 1-2.

COLUMBIA SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- Lindsey Burke of Hilton Head Island won the Girls' 16s doubles championship and lost in the finals of singles in last week's South Carolina State Closed Junior Hard Courts.

#2 seed Burke lost to top-seeded Katie Fosnacht of Blythewood 6-3, 6-1 in the singles final, but teamed with Lindsay Lyles of Manning to win the doubles title in a 6-4, 6-2 final over Kelly Cameron of Hartsville and Anne Marie McClintock of Irmo.

How To Register for a Team -- Six Players Are Needed To Qualify for Scheduling

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Super Seniors, start your engines. Wait a minute. Captain already has done that part. The team is pre-registered. Now it's time for players to individually enter names in the TennisLink roster. Six players must be entered before a team can be eligible for scheduling for the fall season.

So, get your credit card number and expiration date in hand (or head). You must have your team number. Your captain should have that. Entering incorrectly could get you on the wrong team and, as you might guess, USTA does not like to refund money for player error.

Go to http://tennislink.usta.com/leagues

When that comes up, look at the right of the screen and select "Register for a team"

When the next page comes up, enter your USTA number* and team number your captain gave you.

Scroll down and select "Next Step"

When that comes up, follow payment directions. That's it.

* If you are not a USTA member or need to renew, you have to do that in order to get on your team roster. On that same page as above, scroll down on the right below "Register for a team" and select "Join the USTA" or "Renew membership".

USTA League Players Needed

3.0 Women's 70s -- "Aces and Aches" USTA team out of Spring Lake needs players. Season is from Sept. 3 through Nov. 9 -- six matches. The state finals are on Isle of Palm Nov. 7-9 and that date is part of the team commitment. Call Barbara Kiebler 682 3375 or email is Bakiebler@hargray.com.

3.0 Men's 70s -- Moss Creek Men's Super Seniors 70s 3.0 team needs some additional players. Play will begin late August through October. Contact Captain Lou Zeller at 836-3554 or email lougzeller@yahoo.com.

5.5 Women's Combo -- Out of Bluffton High School courts looking for 3.0 women for our team! Anyone interested can email Captain Dianne Austin at dianneaustin@hargray.com.

6.5 Women's Combo -- Team needs 3.5 women players that will be practicing at Chaplin Public Tennis Center Wednesday nights with matches probably on Saturday afternoons. Contact Heather Rath at 301-1122 or heatherrath@yahoo.com.

3.0 Super Senior Men's 60s -- Chaplin Park's first ever 3.0 Super Senior 60s team needs some more players. Season begins early September. Contact Ray Hardy at rayhardy36@aol.com.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Here's a new date to add to your futures book that was not on the original 2008 HHI Tournament Calendar: the Beaufort County Senior Games Nov. 3-7 that includes tennis. The grabber is that it has a Sept. 22 entry deadline.

Entry forms have been distributed to HHI and Beaufort County tennis facilities. Men's and women's singles and doubles plus mixed doubles are scheduled. Also on the schedule: Pickle ball, croquet, swimming, racquetball, horseshoes, bocce, softball, track & field, bridge, putting, bowling, coed volleyball, basketball, golf, cycling.

PTR Pro in Costa Rica High Bidder on USTA President's Box Tickets at US Open: $600

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The silent auction top bidder on Public Tennis Inc.'s USTA President's Box tickets was Jose Naranjo, a Professional Tennis Registry professional who serves as the PTR National Coordinator of Costa Rica. The winning bid was $600, with proceeds going to PTI's court-building fund.

Meanwhile, on another fund-raising effort, PTI is soliciting votes on Marke's Heating and Air Conditioning's giveaway of $500 every month this year to the charity that gets the most votes on its website. As part of its 40th anniversary celebration, Marke's is donating $500 to a local charity nominated by Beaufort County/Lowcountry residents.
