Inaugural Season Closes

Shipyard, Sea Pines To Meet for 3.0 Super Senior 75s Championship Wednesday

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The inaugural season of the USTA League Super Senior 75s will conclude with the Men's 3.0 championship match Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Port Royal Racquet Club. Read that: Nation's first USTA League Super Senior 75s season -- to our knowledge.

On Monday, the Shipyard Beach Boys defeated the Sun City Spoilers 2-1 and Sea Pines CC took all three courts from the Wexford Juvenilities, with the winners advancing to Wednesday's championship match.

Spectators will be admitted free. Local League Senior Men's Coordinator Don Grider, a co-creator of the original Super Seniors back in the last century, is anticipating an expanded season next year, with advanced playoffs with other South Carolina local league teams.

Sole HHI Team in Finals Loses 2-1

Spanish Wells Women 5.5 Finalist at SC Combo States Championships

DANIEL ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- Hilton Head Island's Spanish Wells Combo needed just one third-set match tiebreak Monday in the USTA League South Carolina Combo State Championships. Not to be.

The Wellsians, captained by Bethanne Carroll, went 3-0 in group play, then took a 2-1 semifinal win, but couldn't pull out that final match against Lowcountry's Pine Forest Azalea Chicks, losing 2-1.

Spanish Wells finished better than any of the nine other HHI league teams competing among 158 teams at Family Circle Tennis Center. How the other HHI teams finished is listed by category below. If for nothing else, check out the creative names of the combo teams.

As a side note on the competitiveness of the Combo weekend, HHI's Wexford Ladies of the Net (Arlene Fader, captain) went 0-4 in Super Senior 6.5 team matches. All four matches were lost 2-1. In at least two of the playing categories in which straight round robins were played, the championship came down to same team record, same won/loss record, same number of sets lost and championship decided by the winner having two fewer games lost than the #2 finisher.

Semifinal: Spanish Wells Combo 2, PD/Oakdale CC 1

#1 -- Lynne Button-Zachrich/Valerie Muehleman lost 6-0, 6-4

#2 -- Laura Reilley/Gena Kobleur won 6-4, 6-4

#3 -- Bethanne Carroll/Kimberly Caroline Boyce won 6-1, 7-5

Final: HHI/Spanish Wells Combo 1, LCTA #1/Pine Forest Azalea Chicks 2

#2 – Lynne Zachrich/Valerie Muehleman lost 6-4, 4-6, 1-0

#3 – Laura Reilley/Gena Kobleur lost 6-2, 6-2

Here is the rundown of their match results and the remainder of the Adult, Senior and Super Senior divisions, a few of which have not been finished because of the rain-induced schedule backup. HHI team records are also listed:

Local Players Capture Singles, Doubles Titles in Vacation Co. Adult Championships

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The USTA-sanctioned Vacation Co. Locals Pat Child and Keith Whitlow won singles and doubles championships and Ann Hunt won two doubles titles.

Match-of-the-Day honors had to go to the Men's 70 doubles final in which Neil Vroegop of Rembert SC and HHIslander Lee Butler won 7-5; 6-7(5); 7-6(6) over HHI's Frank Meade and Jim Norton. Southern's Champion 3.0 Women Drop Semifinal

Sun City Hot Shots Long Victory String Runs Out at National Championships

INDIAN WELLS CA (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- The Sun City Hot Shots went unbeaten through the Hilton Head Island league, the South Carolina States and Southern playoffs plus two rounds of the National Senior 3.0 Women's Championships before encountering their first defeat Saturday.

That loss, however, didn't keep the Hot Shots from winning their group and advancing to the semifinals. There the trail did end at the hands of Caribbean/Puerto Rico 2-1. All you have to do was check the final set scores to see how close the matches were. The #1 court ended in a third-set match tiebreak; #2 court's second set was a tiebreak and on #3 court it was 7-5.

The Sun City came that close to the Puerto Ricans who smacked Pacific Northwest 3-0 in the division finals.

Here is the match succession of how the Hot Shots made it through the Nationals:

Southern/Sun City Hot Shots 2, Midwest/Five Seasons Sports Country Club, Indianapolis 1

Ct. 1 -- Karen Benedict/Diane Craig won 6-2, 6-1

Ct. 2 -- Sandra Maylen/Joyce McGaughan lost 6-3, 4-6, 1-0

Ct. 3 -- Jerrilyn Brennan/Toni Valenstein won 6-4, 4-6, 1-0

Southern/Sun City Hot Shots 2, Florida/Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club 1

Ct. 1 -- Joyce McGaughan/Jean Bergenthal lost 7-5, 6-7, 1-0

Ct. 2 -- Karen Benedict/Diane Craig won 6-3, 5-7, 1-0

Ct. 3 -- Jerrilyn Brennan/Toni Valenstein won 6-4, 6-4

Sole HHI Team to Advance (We think)

Spanish Wells Women in 5.5 Finals at SC Combo States Championships

DANIEL ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- The rain-wracked South Carolina Combo State Championships crammed its way through a backed-up schedule toward Monday finals, with Hilton Head Island's Spanish Wells Combo going 3-0 in group play and then taking a 2-1 semifinal win.

With 158 teams entered, the weather upset scheduling that included 10 HHI league teams competing in Adult, Senior and Super Senior levels. The Spanish Wells gals, captained by Bethanne Carroll, defeated PeeDee/Oakdale Country Club of Florence in the semis and go to the finals against the Pine Forest Azalea Chicks of Summerville.

Semifinal: Spanish Wells Combo 2, PD/Oakdale CC 1

#1 -- Lynne Button-Zachrich/Valerie Muehleman lost 6-0, 6-4

#2 -- Laura Reilley/Gena Kobleur won 6-4, 6-4

#3 -- Bethanne Carroll/Kimberly Caroline Boyce won 6-1, 7-5

(Actually, we don't think those were the real scores of the matches. We are guessing the teams played pro sets as in the earlier rounds to make up for rain-delayed scheduling. Those were the scores as entered in TennisLink.)

Here's our best guess at results. The times are probably all incorrect and rescheduled, this shows what matches are yet to be played:
