“Most players that have a ‘B’ try to appeal anyway and find out that they can't. So tell them to try first. TennisLink lets them know immediately if they can appeal.” -- Mary Goins, USTA SC director of leagues
Benchmarks and Benchmarks
The Ratings – After a Week of Sinking In, the Roster Shuffling Begins
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Despite a year of warnings, it still came as quite a shock for the number of “benchmarked” USTA League players who have been booted up a rating level. Likewise, the point that a benchmark player cannot appeal a rating upgrade for one year.
After a couple days of dust settling, here are a few points to highlight:
-- ’08 year-end ratings came from a player’s rating at the start of the year, plus results in the ’08 spring senior and adult local league, district (state) and section championships, the summer mixed doubles local season and fall’s super senior local season. Not counted in the ratings: ’07 super senior local, district, section, national championships; combo local and advanced seasons; mixed doubles and super senior district (state) playoffs.
-- Any player advancing beyond the local season schedule is designated a benchmark “B”. That player cannot appeal for a year. A benchmark is not allowed to appeal to have a rating lowered or raised.
-- A player whose team was involved in a local playoff to determine which teams went to Districts (States) is designated a “BF”, although only “B” appears after the name on TennisLink. A “BF” player is able to appeal. The “BF” is something only TennisLink uses, explains Mary Goins, USTA SC director of leagues.
-- Matches played at district (state), section and national level carry more weight than local league results.
-- Any player who thinks he/she has been designated a benchmark incorrectly should notify Goins A.S.A.P. at mggoins@charter.net.
HOW TO APPEAL YOUR RATING – Go to http://www.sctennis.com. At the top of the webpage, select “Ratings/Appeals” and follow directions. Entering your USTA membership number is the quickest way. If using any other method, be sure to insert your USTA number. If going to “Find a Rating” on the TennisLink main page; enter your USTA number in the top box; your name and rating comes up and beside it are clickable blue words that say “appeal rating”. This does not come up when you are looking up ratings by name; only by individual USTA #. If you can’t work by either method, email us and we’ll try to help.
An appealing email from Senior Men’s Coordinator Don Grider to State and Section officials:
“From the Hilton Head (Island) Senior and Super Senior Men's teams I have 49 benchmark players who were upgraded to the next level. Of these, 18 are players over the age of 70 who were upgraded from 3.0 to 3.5. Of this number, four are 75-78; three are 79 and one is 80. They cannot appeal this rating for one year.
“By the time some of them can get back to a 3.0 (where most should be), they could be on Cloud Nine carrying St. Peter (heaven only knows if he is a 3.5!!) in a doubles match!!”
You owe it to your local and state coordinators to at least go to http://www.usta.com and select TennisLink, then Leagues, then (top right) NTRP Rating Help and then “Understanding Your Year End Rating”. It’s a bit “soupy” but listen closely.
