Stephens, McAbee, Itkor Take Adult Singles Titles
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The guys wrapped it up in a hurry, but the gals, well, a third-set match tiebreak had to settle the final in today's action of the David M. Carmines Memorial Tennis Championships at Van der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club.
Islander's Anneliza Itkor and Cindy Knight split the first two sets in the Women's 3.5 final, with Itkor coming through in the match tiebreak 10-8. Harold Stephens lost just six games in two weekend matches, taking a 6-1, 6-2 win over Brian Casey in the Men's 3.5 final. Wiliam McAbee lost one game in the quarterfinals, got a walkover in the semis and ran the table 6-0, 6-0 in the Men's 4.0 title match over Bob Awrey.
The afternoon doubles finished the tournament that benefits the medical research in the name of the young HHIslander who lost his life to cancer. Island Rec Center also was a beneficiary. Tom Jilly was tournament director; Sandra Morrissette was tournament referee.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Brent Lett, Sam Trimble and Lindsey Burke each won singles and doubles titles in a very busy finals day in the Carmines Memorial Tennis Championships at Chaplin Public Tennis Center. It was a record draw with almost double the number of entries as last year.
Lett and Trimble won their respective singles divisions -- 14s and 12s -- then teamed to win the 14s doubles. Burke captured the 16s singles, then teamed with Kendal Drake for the doubles title in that division.

Main Draw Starts Monday
Wheelchair Tennis Exhibition, Clinic at Family Circle USTA Day Wednesday
DANIEL ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Family Circle Cup, with main draw matches beginning Monday, will have a wheelchair tennis exhibition and clinic on Wednesday, which also is USTA Member Appreciation Day.
Hilton Head Island’s Julie Jilly of the Professional Tennis Registry will emcee the event with PTR South Carolina’s Bob Masella and Dave Rogers as wheelchair players in a one-up, one-down exhibition at 3 p.m., followed by a drill clinic. The SC players are top-ranked nationally. During the clinic, anyone can try out the special tennis wheelchairs.
USTA members get a $10 discount on tickets that day and can attend a free reception from 1:30 to 3 p.m. by showing the USTA card. Kids’ Day court activities will run from 4 to 5 p.m.
Jelena Jankovic is #1 seed for the championships and Bausch & Lomb (Amelia Is.) champion Maria Sharapova is #2, with Anna Chakvetadze #3, Elena Dementieva #4, Serena Williams #5, Marion Bartoli #6, Patty Schnyder #7 and Dinara Safina #8. Williams is scheduled to play the first night match of the tournament on Tuesday.
Men’s Playoff Continue
3.0, 3.5 Senior Women's Playoffs Set To Decide Teams, Seeding for State Championships
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – USTA League Senior Women's 3.0s and 3.5s will play off Apr. 22 and 23 to determine the HHIsland lineup of teams and seeding in the South Carolina State Senior Championships that will be played here May 10-12.
On Tuesday the 22nd, the 3.0s will have the Dataw Darlins hosting Beaufort Low Country Lobsters to determine HHI #1 and #2 seeds for States. Competing for HHI’s third team at States will be the SC Yacht Hotsie Yachtsies at PD Dynamic Duos. Both matches are at 2 p.m.
The 3.5 women will play Wednesday the 23rd, with Spring Lake Roaring Rackets playing host to Port Royal Glory Girls for HHI’s first and second place and Sun City Swingers will meet SCYacht Nauti-Gals for third and fourth.
Some 1,000 SC seniors will be competing in the state championships on 2.5 through 4.5 levels, with winners and a couple wildcards advancing to the Southern Championships July 19-27 in Mobile AL.
