Riske Ride Ends in Semis of $50,000 Boston Tournament
BOSTON MA (TENNIS E-NEWS via usta.com) – Hilton Head Island women’s tour player Alison Riske got to her second $50,000 tournament semifinals of the year, but could not advance any farther, losing to Rebecca Marino of Canada 6-3, 6-1. That match Saturday was Riske’s seventh in as many days in the Empire Loan USTA Women’s Tournament.
Riske had won three rounds of qualifying and three in the main draw leading to the semis. In the Spring, she had reached the semifinals of a $50,000 tournament in Florida. In the Fall, she will enroll as a freshman at Vanderbilt University, following the tennis steps of her sister Sarah McGlamery, a four-time all-American there who now lives on Hilton Head Island.
In another HHI connection, International Tennis Federation Tour Supervisor for the Boston championships was Missy Malool, former HHIslander and now of Greater Bluffton. Also, Alison Riske worked with, among others, Islander Yves Boulais, who formerly coached Canadian Marino.
$1,500 Goes to Courts
Ey-land Player Wins USOpen Tickets in Fundraiser for Chaplin Tennis Courts
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) – Active Chaplin Public Tennis Center player Wolfgang Ey now will have a chance to sit and watch some pretty good tennis, having had his name drawn in the Public Tennis Inc. fundraiser Sunday. The effort raised more than $1,500 for the court-expansion fund at Chaplin Park.
Ey now has two courtside seats for the 2009 US Open on his choice of days during the first week of play. Pennsylvanian Giancarlo Mazzoleni was high bidder in a silent auction for President’s Box seats at the Open.
PTI is midway through a 10-year plan to pay for the court-building project that expanded the facility to six lighted courts.
Combo Players Wanted
5.5 women's – A women’s combo team is being formed at Chaplin Public Tennis Center. A volunteer captain also is being sought. Interested players (and captain) should contact Tim Ryan at chaplinroundrobin@hotmail.com.
