Wexford, PDTC, Port Royal Win Mixed Doubles State Championships

CHARLESTON SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- The 5.0 Adult Wexford Dream Team played its dream match and the 7.0 Senior Port Royal Topspinners and 8.0 Senior PDTC simply put on a show of coooooooool in third-set match tiebreaks, capturing three finals for Hilton Head Island league teams in the South Carolina State Mixed Doubles Championships that ended today.

The Dreamers didn't monkey around with those third-set histrionics and took two straight-set courts in a 2-1 final over Spartanburg area's Westside Blue. Team captain Cal Navis and Carrie Vormohr won 6-3, 6-1 and Les Jones and Eliza Hall won 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the championship.

The 7.0 Senior Topspinners took two straight-setters in winning a 2-1 semifinal this morning over LCTA's Walterboro Silver. In the final, however, it was a TSMT by George Cooper and Dorothy Taylor that salted away Port Royal's championship. It was their second win of the day and was complemented by Dave Dockum and Team Captain Janet Goldin winning 6-2, 6-4 for the 2-1 finals victory.

8.0 Senior PDTC seemed bent on a Guinness record in the trail to the championship. The HHIslanders won five courts in TSMTs in their first two in-group matches. They swept through their third and four team matches winning mostly in straight-set courts. Just for excitement sake no doubt, PDTC's Sally Harvey and Roscoe Chambers no Court 1 and Kathy Jensen and Bobby Tillison on Court 3 both lost first sets 6-2 in the final. They recovered, however, and came back to win second sets and then the match super tiebreak.

The 6.0 Senior Spring Lake Odd Couples, captained by Tom Larkin, went 1-2 in group play but got a wildcard into the semifinals. It all ended there as Columbia's #1 Parklane Real Mixed Up won 2-1. All three matches in the semi-final went to third-set match tiebreaks.

Here are today's the results. These are incomplete, but we'll get to that later this week:

This is no "Found Money" list. It's a "Lost Reader" list of folks who aren't getting TENNIS E-News now and may be wondering why. If you know any of these folks, all help is accepted in reconnecting with them. Thanks.
