First Call Out for HHI Split Senior Men’s Interclub: Will CCTA Have an Interclub Too??

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Another foot is coming down in the transformation of area league tennis, with the initial call for the Senior Men’s Interclub season that will begin late next month. Dick Sonberg, inveterate Interclub coordinator, is organizing a Hilton Head Island-only format* for the November-through-January season. (Hilton Head Island now appears in the standing records with an asterisk* meaning Moss Creek included.)

Following the lead of TAHHI/USTA leagues, Men’s Interclub will now be limited to teams playing with a site on Hilton Head Island*. Teams with playing sites off-Island will have to organize their own league ... and that effort may already be under way. Ernie Clark, senior men’s coordinator for Coastal Carolina Tennis Association, has emailed Bluffton, Sun City, Beaufort, the islands, etc., team captains to check on interest interclub competition for those areas.

Should both sides of The Bridge get it together, a season-end playoff between the respective champions is likely. Levels 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 are involved in Interclub, all much more laid back compared to the spring, summer and fall USTA League seasons. (Yes, the women also have an interclub, but no one is supposed to know because it is “just for fun” and everyone is cool with that.)

The interclub season, though set in the USTA rating and three-courts formats, has no bearing on year-end ratings. Also, the new ratings that appear at the end of November will have no bearing on interclub. A player’s rating as of the start of interclub will carry through the complete season.

For the Hilton Head Island clubs, captains from last year have been emailed by Sonberg for information on the ’08-’09 season. The data that needs to go to rtsiws@aol.com:

1. Name of team

2. Level of play (3.0, 3.5, etc.)

3. Site of matches and starting time (should be either 2 or 2:30 p.m.)

4. Name of captain with telephone number and email address

5. Name of assistant captain with telephone and email address

Deadline for team registration is Friday, Oct. 3. Also requested is a reply if a team that competed in ’07 does NOT plan to compete this year.

For CCTA clubs and tennis centers, that same information should be emailed to Clark at tennisracquets@yahoo.com.

Register by Oct. 6

Deadline Approaching for Adult Team Tennis

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) –Public Tennis Inc. is approaching final registration for its Adult Team Tennis fall season. Deadline for registering teams is Oct. 6 for the season that will begin late next month. More than 150 players are expected for the all-mixed-doubles league.

Coordinator Ray Hardy and associate Tim Ryan plan for the season to run through mid-January and again culminate in a season-ending District Championship and Player's Party. New this year will be the addition of a fifth court that will include play at the 7.5 level as well an increase to a 12-game pro set. The matches will include mixed doubles play in 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0 and 7.5 with all games counting towards the match for a total of 60 points up for grabs. The team with the most games won at the end of the season will receive the #1 seeding at the District Championships.

Cost to register for a team is $34 plus a $3.05 TennisLink fee and includes all court fees and balls. Proceeds from the league will benefit the PTI program fund as well as the new court funds at both Bluffton and Chaplin. Team Captains interested in fielding a team must contact either of the coordinators – rayhardy36@aol.com or chaplinroundrobin@hotmail.com.
