Play at Chaplin Park, Shipyard

PTR/ROHO $15,000 Wheelchair Championships Begin Today; Feature Matches Thursday Night

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The PTR/ROHO Wheelchair Tennis Championships rolls out today and will run through Sunday at Chaplin Public Tennis Center and in Shipyard Plantation. The $15,000 prize-money event has attracted players from throughout the country as well as overseas. Admission is free to spectators at both sites.

A Run/Roll event (wheelchair and able-bodied player) will take place today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Chaplin, with wheelchair players paired with local partners. Twenty-six teams are competing.

Thursday will be feature-match night, beginning at 7 p.m. with WHHI-TV’s Ed McCollough (a beginner tennis player) taking on the #1 female junior wheelchair player in the world, Emmy Kaiser, in a four-game set. That will be followed by a Run/Roll winner vs. finalist demonstration four-game set. Top feature match is set for 7:30, with men’s open doubles involving top world-ranked players. Stefan Olsson of Sweden will be wearing his Silver Olympic Medal which he won in Beijing.

The Men’s B & C divisions are scheduled to play early rounds at the Evian Courts in Shipyard Plantation. The Quads will play at the Van Der Meer Shipyard Indoor Courts next to the Crowne Plaza Resort. Play for the Women’s Open and Men’s A will begin Thursday morning.

The tournament off-court activities will include a Quickie Welcome Reception tonight, a ROHO Awards Banquet Friday evening to honor the Player of the Year and Sportsmanship winners and a Saturday evening Beach Party at the Holiday Inn Oceanfront deck.

3 Area Tennis Leaders To Receive 2008 Annual Honors from South Carolina Tennis Association
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Bluffton junior coordinator Bob Brown and HHI’s tennis official Sandra Morrissette and Special Olympics volunteer Myron Meister have been selected for South Carolina honors that will be presented in December at the SC Tennis Association’s annual award ceremonies in Myrtle Beach.

The breaking news awards will be to Meister as Special Olympics Volunteer of the Year, to Morrissette as Pete Conklin Official of the Year and Brown as Junior Team Tennis Coordinator of the Year. Also to receive an award is former HHI teaching pro Joey Eskridge as John Newcomb Pro of the Year.

Each year players, volunteers, events and officials are nominated from awards that range from most-improved juniors to tennis sponsors. Honorees are chosen by a USTA South Carolina awards committee. The annual meeting, held for the last several years at Westin Hilton Head Island Resort, this year will be Dec. 11-14 in Myrtle Beach. Meetings and workshops set up programs, league rules and formats and such for the following year. Climax of the weekend is the Saturday night South Carolina Tennis Patrons Hall of Fame Banquet, during which the SC awards are presented and Hall of Fame induction is held.
