ISLE OF PALMS SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) – What more needs to be said?! The South Carolina Super Senior State Championships turned into a bash by Hilton Head Island and Coastal Carolina players, as they combined to win nine of 11 contested divisions that wrapped up finals today at Wild Dunes Racquet Club. In one of the two categories that went elsewhere, an HHI team was runnerup and another HHI team placed second to an HHI team champion.
No time yet to check the record books. We’ll leave that to Guinness and the accountants compiling overall won-loss totals.
After sweeping the women’s and men’s 70s categories Saturday, the Sea Pines Country Club 75s got up early today and took three courts for the first-ever state championship in that age division. Captained by Bill Zervoulis, SPCC clinched the two-team division over Lexington’s Topspin Ancients.
Bill Cale’s Long Cove Super Retreads won an early semifinal today, then stepped aside while Barbara Steiger’s Port Royal Senior Moments and Allan Zak’s Port Royal won their finals. The PR Moments took one of those pesky third-set tiebreaks to clinch the 60s Women’s 4.0 championship over the Lowcountry Super Women 2-1. The PR guys, competing as HHI #2, won the 60s Men’s 4.0 final with a pair of straight-setters over Upper Piedmont/Spindle Tree.
The Long Cove ‘treads came back out at high noon and won the 60s Men’s 3.5 final over Grand Strand/Riverfront of Conway 2-1, doing it on straight-set decisions.
Surely a future Trivial Pursuit question will deal with which team was the first Coastal Carolina state champion – the 60s Men’s 3.0 Sun City Court Jesters, captained by Bill Flack. And the tiebreaker question will be which doubles team won two third-set match tiebreaks that clinched the semifinal and final: Alex Tan and Paul Naef. (Some day USTA will report third sets by something other than the idiotic “1-0” result.)
With 28 Hilton Head Island and Coastal Carolina teams are competing and completing play today, the Men’s 2.5s will play this week, with only two teams – Moss Creek and Country Club of Hilton Head.
Here are today’s team results (+ individual results in Saturday championship clinchers) involving HHI and CCTA teams. There are some funky names/spellings/etc. and we’ve tried to follow what’s posted:
