Moss Creek Wins Super Senior States 2.5 Championship; Sectionals Next??

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – With more cuts and slices than you’ll find in a Publix meat case, the Moss Creek Raging Bulls won the South Carolina Super Senior 60 Men’s 2.5 State Championship Friday afternoon at Sun City, ending the playoffs that saw Hilton Head Island and Coastal Carolina teams winning 10 of 12 contested state divisions.

Ironically, Moss Creek, lobbying early this year for inclusion in the HHI leagues, ended up in a combined division because numbers were lacking for separate leagues. All 2.5s played under CCTA. The Raging Bulls of HHI thus won their first championship under the CCTA wing. Moss Creek was the CCTA #2 team and won Friday to take the deciding match in a best-of-three from #1 Country Club of Hilton Head. While the rest of the state playoffs were last weekend at Wild Dunes, the 2.5s had only two entrants and the matches were played here.

The Raging Bulls will be South Carolina’s representative at the Southern Section Championships Mar. 20-22 in Pelham AL, providing some other of the eight states in Southern produces a 2.5 champion.

Champions and players in the Super Senior States should keep an eye on www.sctennis.com for the championship story and photos of winning teams as well as action shots of play. Yes, you and your forehand may be on the Internet. Scary!!!

Here are Friday’s final match results:
CCTA #2/Moss Creek Raging Bulls 3, CCTA #1/Country Club of Hilton Head Court Jesters 0

Ct. 1 -- Doug West/Charles Dattelbaum def. Imants Zeidlickis/Roger Rathbun 6-1, 6-3
Ct. 2 -- Wayne Effron/Bob Davis def. John Nowacek/Stuart Enscoe 6-1, 6-2
Ct. 3 -- David Teschner/Alan Calderon def. James Brissenden/Alan Bikson 4-6, 6-3, 1-0

HHI High Girls Win 2nd Straight State Championship

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – With local Super Seniors winning championships up the beach at Wild Dunes, the Hilton Head Island High School girls’ varsity tennis team won their division South Carolina State Championship for the second year in a row.

The team had a flawless season and breezed through the playoffs to encounter the same foe as last year in the finals – the JL Mann High School Patriots. The Lady Seahawks lost only one match at the state championship -- the #5 singles -- in pulling out their 6-1 win over JL Mann to clinch the 3AAA title. The High School Leagues end at State and there is no national or regional title. This year’s team had only three seniors and is looking to be back at the state championships again next year.
