Parente New President of Public Tennis, Inc.; Ryan To Serve as VP/Chaplin

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Jacque Houck handed over a check for $7,500 to the Town of Hilton Head Island Tuesday, then passed on the gavel as president of Public Tennis, Inc., at its annual organization meeting.

The check, presented at Town Council meeting, was for PTI's 2008 obligation to the town on a 10-year payback plan for the expense of adding two courts at Chaplin Public Tennis Center. Income from league teams and other fund-raising activities go toward the annual payment.

John Parente was elected president of PTI, to take over Houck's expiring term at the end of this month. Tim Ryan, creator and author of The Chaplin Chatter, among other activities, will take on the duties as vice president/Chaplin. Catherine Ghys was returned as secretary and Larry Wiener as treasurer. Gavin Cox is vice president/Bluffton and David Riedmayer is vice president/Beaufort.

The PTI board discussed 2007 activities that saw an increase in USTA League teams as well as USA Adult and Junior Team Tennis. In 2008, Ryan said that Chaplin will continue its Sunday mixed doubles round robins that were held about 40 times last year. Also, the center's second Woody Tournament -- all players using wood rackets -- will be played Memorial Day weekend, May 24-25.

Second Organizational Meeting Wednesday in Bluffton for New League Area

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- A second organizational meeting for the new USTA League playing district will be held Wednesday (23rd) at 5:30 p.m. at the Palmetto Electric New River Center, with choice of a name for the district one of the topics. The meeting was planned for Bluffton Public Library, but that was unavailable.

Local League Coordinator Jackie Reynecke said today that minutes of Saturday's initial meeting will be sent to all who attended that session and others requesting them. (*Names of attendees at the first meeting are at the end of this story.)

South Carolina State League Coordinator Mary Goins conducted Saturday's meeting and presented overall plans on how and when the Hilton Head Island and Beaufort County leagues would be split. Attendees, representing tennis communities throughout the area, approved "The Bridge" as dividing line for the two districts. Further detailing of plans and setting up personnel to administer the district will be major points of next Wednesday's meeting.

An open invitation for names of the district drew a flurry of instant replies, most popular of which was "Coastal Carolina" or some variations of that. More suggestions have come in since the last issue of TENNIS E-News. In keeping with the theme-established Traditions Hilton Head, Sun City Hilton Head, Super Wal-Mart Hilton Head, here is one emailed suggestion: "Hilton Head Tennis Association" (That's a TENNIS E-News tweekie favorite into which could fit everyone with "Hilton Head SC" in USTA membership data.)

Here are the latest nominees arriving in our inbox -- listed in the order the names arrived, with the most recent on top:

Mainland Tennis Association (MTA)

South Coastal Carolina Tennis Association (SCCTA) or Coastal Carolina South Tennis Association (CCSTA)

Anyone interested in joining the organizing effort and/or in continuing in one of the official roles should contact Reynecke at jackie@palmettodunes.com.

"Lowcountry" is not one of the possible names because that already is the Charleston area designation. Got a suggestion? Email it to TENNIS E-News at banana@hargray.com and the name will be passed on to the league organizers.

Saturday Open Session for Views on Tennis Courts at Buckwalter Tract

BLUFFTON SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The public forum Saturday at the Community Center of Shultz Park will cultivate citizen ideas for the proposed development of a town park on the Buckwalter tract. Forum hours will be 9 a.m. to noon.

The proposal for a 13-court public tennis facility has been part of the discussed development for the new park that would include a stadium court and a clubhouse. This facility is aimed at providing for the expanding Bluffton tennis community and to help attract tennis tournaments to the area and the revenues created by them. Bluffton coach and tennis activist Bob Brown is encouraging tennis enthusiasts to attend the forum and let the Bluffton Town Council and Beaufort County Parks and Leisure know the importance such a public tennis facility is to the community. For more information, contact Brown at 290-2833 or by email at randdbrown@hargray.com

Winter Senior Men's Interclub Overlapping With Start of USTA Spring Season

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- As Senior Men's Interclub comes down to its last week of play in 3.0s and 3.5 playoffs, the schedule is headknocking with the start of USTA Leagues spring season.

"There will be a conflict for the last two weeks of the regular interclub season," Interclub Coordinator Dick Sonberg said. He has recommended that the remaining interclub matches be moved so that USTA matches can be played as scheduled.
