Hogg Doggs Finish 2-2 But Play Spoilers at Southern Combo Championships
BATON ROUGE LA (TENNIS E-News) -- Things were a tad damp for the start of 2007 BMW Combo Doubles Southern Sectional Championships, washing out the first day’s matches and prompting the event’s website to “welcome” players out early Saturday for “good exercise squeegying courts” in order to get matches started. For then on, it was pro-set city for the 1,700 players competing from nine Southern states.
Hilton Head Island’s Port Royal Hogg Doggs, under Captain Wes Breinich, went 2-2 in the Senior Men’s 7.5, losing a tight 2-1 match to the eventual champion Mississippi/Pine Belt. The Doggs were playing as South Carolina “B” team, having finished behind the state champ in last fall's playoffs. Pine Belt swept the SC entries, winning the final title match 2-1 over SC “A” Gatewood Underdogs.
The Hogg Doggs finished third in group, while Pine Belt and Alabama/Anniston tied at 3-1, with the HHI team administering 3-0 Anniston’s only loss. Pine Belt advanced to finals based on most courts won – 9-3 vs. 7-5 for Anniston.
