Van der Meer Open -- Stokke Takes Men's; Wong Battles to Women's Title

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) -- Top seed Jonathan Stokke won in straight sets, but #1 Keri Wong had to fight through a marathon three-setter in today's finals of the Van der Meer Open. The tournament drew 60 players representing more than 15 countries at VdM Tennis Center

Stokke defeated #3 Christophe Bonadona 6-4, 6-2 in the men's final. Wong took on #2 Maria Brito and the two battled through a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(8) final.

The tournament players ranged from age 14 through 50s and included local academy level juniors, teaching professionals, local adults and players currently playing the professional satellite tours in the United States and internationally. It was the first of three Open events to be held by Van der Meer in 2008 and was highlighted by singles and doubles finals featuring teaching professionals for Van der Meer Tennis Center and Sea Pines Racquet Club.

Van der Meer will next host top 12-14-year-olds from around the Southeast in the Bullfrog USTA Sectional Designated Event Apr. 26-28. For more Information, contact VdM Director of Events Justyn Schelver at 785-8388 ext 119.

Crosby Wins Singles & Doubles in Fripp Spring Clay Courts

FRIPP ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) -- Greg Crosby of Beaufort won Men's 4.0 singles and, teamed with William Dalton, took the 4.0 doubles in today's finals of the Spring Clay Court Championships at Fripp Island Racquet Club. The USTA-sanctioned event with 132 players was littered throughout with high-scoring third-set super tiebreaks -- especially in doubles.

Fripp, under Tournament Director Troy McMullen, also will host a Fall Clay Court Championships Sept. 26-28.

HHI Junior Heading to Russia as U.S. Federation Cup Practice Partner

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Alison Riske, a 17-year-old from Pittsburgh PA and currently residing on Hilton Head Island, was selected as a practice partner of the U.S. Federation Cup team against Russia Apr. 26-27 in Moscow. Riske will join the team with Lindsey Davenport and the others to be announced.

Riske has been ranked #1 in the Girls' 18s USTA national rankings this past year and reached the finals of the USTA Girls' 18s National Hard Court Championships. She has wins over players in the top #150 WTA and reached the second round of the US Open qualifying in 2007.
