New HHI High School Courts

"Last night the Board approved the re-building of the HHI tennis courts. I was told they should be available for play by December 15th. Is there any way to recognize this in your next issue of TENNIS E-News?"

Winners' News Always Appears in RED in TENNIS E-News

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- You read the message above. That's the complete email received this morning from Joan Deery, Beaufort County School Board member and HHIsland tennis player.

We are awaiting further details from Larry Wilson, executive director of operations for Beaufort County Schools and a HHI tennis player, and from court architect Barry Taylor, HHI tennis player.

If you have been gone a long time or are new to HHI, you might not know that the HHI High tennis courts have disintegrated once again and are in such bad condition that they have been declared unsafe for play. The high school girls' team has negotiated alternate playing sites for this fall's season.

Stay tuned.

5 Wexford Teams, 3 Others Go for SC Mixed Doubles Championships This Weekend

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- You have it right: If you are a Wexford tennis player, you are leaving town for the weekend. The USTA League South Carolina Championships will be played Saturday through Monday in Charleston and six HHI league team winners and two #2 teams will be competing.

Ninety teams from throughout the state are in the Adult and Senior draws, using a preliminary round robin group format playing Saturday and Sunday. Group leaders, plus a few wildcards, will advance to Monday semifinals and finals. Champions will advance to Southern Sectionals later this fall.

Hilton Head Island teams competing in the championships:

Adult 5.0 -- 8 teams entered -- Wexford Wildcats (Mary Navis, captain)

Adult 6.0 -- 16 teams entered -- Wexford 6.0 Adult (Debra Brown, captain) (HHI #1); Wexford Racquets (Nick Esposito, captain) (HHI #2)

Adult 7.0 -- 16 teams entered -- Bluffton 7.0 Adult (James Stiteler, captain)

Adult 8.0 -- 12 teams entered -- SCYC Anglers (John Lewis, captain)

Adult 9.0 -- 5 teams entered -- none from HHI

Adult 10.0 -- 3 teams entered -- none from HHI

Senior 6.0 -- 12 teams entered -- SL The Odd Couples (Charles Costabell, captain) (HHI #1); Wexford Seniors (Catherine Forlenza, captain) (HHI #2)

Senior 7.0 -- 12 teams entered -- Wexford Topspinners (Janet Goldin, captain)

Senior 8.0 -- 8 teams entered -- none from HHI

One thing we have to do is spark more originality in team names. We have some great ones that SHOULD spark imagination of captains and players. "Wexford Adult" … "Bluffton Adult" … come on, gang, you can do better than that!!! And if you don't, TENNIS E-News will give you a name.

The Tennis Channel: Good News, Bad News

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The good news is that The Tennis Channel is succeeding. The bad news is that The Tennis Channel is succeeding.

Got that right. The success of TTC has brought more and more live tournament action, including Grand Slams, to that channel and not to much of the area's basic cable service. Which is great if you get TTC. Some area views got TTC at no addition charge with their local cable provider. Others have access to TTC as part of premium packages.

What's new? TTC is now available on Direct TV. Get out your checkbook.
