Sanctioned Event Ends Sunday

63 HHI Area Juniors in Draws for This Weekend's Van der Meer Championships

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- Van der Meer Tennis Center is hosting its annual USTA-sanctioned Junior Championships this weekend and, if you want to see some great-hitting young folks, get yourself over to the DeAllyon Road center for the action that is open free to spectators.

The tournament has 24 juniors from Hilton Head Island, 24 from Hilton Head, 8 from Bluffton and 7 from Beaufort amidst the total draw of 131 players from throughout the Southeast.

Two local players are top-seeded in the 18s: Caroline Gerber (HH) in Girls' and Alexandru Pasareanu (Bluffton) in Boys', while Valerie Droop (HHI) is #1 seed in Girls' 10s.

#2 seeds from the area are: Andrew Bonnell (HHI), Boys' 18s; Samantha Sullivan (Beaufort), Girls' 16s; Zaynep Mafa (HHI), Girls' 14s; James Bachety (Beaufort), Boys' 12s; Ellie Czura (Bluffton), Girls' 10s.

Quarterfinals, Semifinals Set Today in Fripp Island Clay Court Championships

FRIPP ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- The Fripp Island Clay Court Championships rolled through its Round of 16 and Quarterfinals Friday at the Fripp Island Racquet Club. The USTA-sanctioned tournament has 129 players competing in age and rating divisions of singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

Remaining quarters and semis are set for today, with finals Sunday. The tournament is the autumn version of the spring championships held in early March.

Monday Last Date for Adding Players in Super Senior Leagues

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- With USTA League Super Seniors heading into the heart of their seasons, the final deadline is Monday for adding players to team rosters. The 60s, 70s and 75s will be wrapping up their schedules by the end of October in preparation for South Carolina State Championships Nov. 8-11 on Seabrook Island.
