Semis, Finals Sunday

Spring Lake Cruisers Win Super Senior State Championship; More HHIs Contending

SEABROOK ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – The Spring Lake Cruisers brought the Hilton Head Island league players a third championship today in the USTA South Carolina Super Senior State Championships.To win the Men’s 70s title, they had to defeat fellow Islanders Sea Pines Imposters. The 70s division Women’s 3.0 Sun City Golden Girls and Men’s 3.5 Indigo Run Golden Bear Claws won their respective championships Friday.

The SL Cruisers, captained by Bob Pentz took all three courts from the Imposters, captained by Bob Hilton. Two of the sets were in the infamous third set match tiebreaks. Here is how the championship match came down:

#1 doubles – Frank Flaumenhaft/Richard Clapp def. Hudson Fesche/Sal Zuccolo 6-7, 6-4, 1-0

#2 doubles – Don Coleman/Hale Mayer def. Dick Saunders/Bill McCaffery 6-4, 4-6, 1-0

#3 doubles – Bob Pentz/Dick Bloom def. Bob Hilton/Murray Hallett 7-5, 7-5

Four HHIsland league teams advanced to the Sunday 60s semifinals – HHI #3 Dataw dawgs in the Men’s 3.0; HHI #1 Long Cove Super Retreads in Men’s 3.5; HHI #3 PD Golden Girls and HHI #2 Country Club of Hilton Head Tiebreakers who will face each other in Women’s 3.0.

Twenty HHI league teams were among 81 competing from throughout the state. Champions of each division will advance to the Southern Sectionals early next year and go against winners from eight other states.

Here are today’s results and the Seabrook schedule involving HHI league teams. Reporting again from an Internet-impaired Seabrook condo, TENNIS E-News will provide more complete results Sunday.
