Senior Men's Interclub in Full Swing in 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 Divisions

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The 4.0s got started last week, but all the other Senior Men's Interclub League teams waited until the buses returned home Sunday from Seabrook Island and the Super Senior State Championships. Longtime Interclub Coordinator Dick Sonberg already has his whip out making sure teams play their best partners on Court 1, second best on Court 2, etc. Someone even has suggested trying a format from another region in which winning Ct. 1 gets a team three points, winning Ct. 2 gets two points and a Ct. 3 win earns one point. Whatever. Game on.

Two 12-team divisions started the season this week in the Men's 3.0; the 3.5s are under way with eight teams in one flight and 10 in the second. At season's end, division leaders will play off for their respective championships. Yes, Women's Interclub also is playing, but Homeland Security does not allow us to know about that.

Here is the start of the results:

Jack's Jokers on Top After 3 Weeks of Team Tennis Action

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- It's a format that rewards most overall games won and Jack's Jokers are leading the pack after the first three weeks of USA Adult Team Tennis at Chaplin Public Tennis Center.

The Jokers, captained by Jack (of course) Abernathy, hold a 109/62 games won/lost lead over second place L.C. Nap-sters of Captain Joe Sabbatino standing with 105/76. The Jokers are 3-0 in team matches, followed by four teams at 2-1.

The all-mixed-doubles league has 125 players on roster for the eight teams competing -- a significant increase from last year's 71 players on five teams. The season will run through Jan. 5, 2008.

Champions 'cross the Border

SAVANNAH GA (TENNIS E-News via special correspondent David Hayes) -- Cindy Knight, who captains a 3.0 HHI team and another in Combo 5.5, hit paydirt across the border over the weekend when a Savannah team she captains won the Georgia State Championship at the 5.5 level. She started a team of players from Savannah that won the Savannah league and went to Bainbridge GA for the State Championships. They went undefeated in their group and, in the finals, they pulled it out 2-1.

The team now advances to Sectionals in Baton Rouge LA.

Upper and Lower State Teams Dominate at Super Senior Championships

by Dennis Malick -- written for www.sctennis.com

SEABROOK ISLAND SC (11/12/07) -- The USTA League South Carolina State Super Senior Championships wasn't exactly another war between the North and the South. For one thing, no cities were burned to the ground and it was more a battle of the Grey and the Bald -- women excepted, of course.

Plenty of netcords were singed, however, and there were walking wounded in knee braces, thigh wraps and ice packs when the sun finally set on the fourth beautiful day of super action tennis at The Racquet Club at Seabrook Island. The final tally from the 85 teams and 787 players showed Upper Piedmont and Hilton Head Island each with four team championships of the 11 contested divisions.

The championships marked the eighth and final year at Seabrook and Kiawah. (Bids are out for next year's site.) "Fantastic tournament -- good weather; great hospitality; super Seabrook staff under Mike Kiser," said State Super Senior Coordinator Bonnie Sue Duncan. "Play was phenomenal, with many matches being determined by third-set match tiebreaks."

UPTA dominated in the 60s, with champions in Women's and Men's 3.0 and Men's 4.0 and the 70s Women's 3.5. HHI won three 70s championships -- Men's and Women's 3.0 and Men's 3.5 in addition to the 60s 2.5. The latter was played earlier in the week on Hilton Head Island among four HHI teams that were the only entries.

Low Country, Grand Strand and Lexington each won one division in the 60s. In addition to its four champions, Hilton Head Island had five finalist teams -- three in 60s and two in 70s. LATA and LCTA had two finalists each and UPTA and GSTL one each. Aiken, Columbia, Foothills, Greenwood, PeeDee, Spartanburg and York County teams also competed but didn't make the finals.

Next stop: Southern Sectional Super Senior Championships, Columbus GA, March 28-30, 2008, then the Nationals in Mobile AL, April 25-27, 2008 (6.0 & 8.0 Levels) and April 28-30, 2008 (7.0 & 9.0 Levels).

And now the 75s --

State Coordinator Duncan noted that this year showed increased play, especially in the Men's 3.0 70s, with a 6% overall increase in participation from 2006 to 2007.

New this year: Don Grider, Hilton Head Island senior men's coordinator and a Super Senior co-founder, started a pilot 75s league with six teams playing a double round robin in 3.0 and two teams competing at 3.5. Of the eight teams, 20% of the players are in their 80s. If senior memory serves correctly, that's how Super Seniors started late in the last century. Grider anticipates more than 100 players in next year's 75s and hopes that other local leagues across the state will have teams. HHI Senior Women's Coordinator Mary Ellen Arboe has women clamoring for a 75s league in '08.
