Season Finale for 3.0 Men's 75s League

Shipyard Tops Standings; Sea Pines CC Wins Playoff in Another HHI First

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The regular season championship went to 5-0 Shipyard Beach Boys, but Sea Pines Country Club won the playoff in what is likely the nation's first Super Seniors 75s league.

Seed for the pilot league, like its predecessor Super Senior 60s and 70s, was planted in the fertile Hilton Head Island tennis soil. Look for Local League Senior Men's Coordinator Don Grider to have an expanded season in 2008, joined by teams organized by Senior Women's Coordinator Mary Ellen Arboe.

Wednesday's championship playoff resembled something out of the spring BillyBob Century Cup Doubles. Two Bobs (Hilton and Craig) won for Sea Pines and two Bobs (Brown and Simes) won for Shipyard. A Bill (McCaffery) was another Country Club winner over a Bob (Pentz), plus partners, of course. Another Bill (Zervoulis) was on the losing end.

Look for the HHI success of the 75s to attract attention on state and section levels for next season. National? Well, they're pretty slow at catching on to things that actually work. In any case, here as how things worked out here:

Final 75s Men's 3.0 League Standings

Shipyard Beach Boys 5-0

Sea Pines Country Club 4-1

Sun City Spoilers 3-2

Wexford Juvenilites 2-3

Country Club of Hilton Head 1-4

Sun City Codgers 0-5

Playoff: Sea Pines CC (Bill Zervoulis, captain) 2, Shipyard (Bob Pentz, captain) 1

Ct. 1 -- Eric Smith/Bill McCaffery (SPCC) def. Jack Holcombe/Bob Pentz 6-2, 6-1

Ct. 2 -- Bob Hilton/Bob Craig (SPCC) def. Jim Manella/Leighton Dodd 6-3, 6-3

Ct. 3 -- Bob Brown/Bob Simes (Shipyard) def. Howard Rice/Bill Zervoulis 6-2, 7-5

Meanwhile in the 3.5s Men's 75s … the Sun City Bashers completed the season with a 3-1 record and the championship in that first-ever division. Captain Ernie Clark led that cast of characters.

Falcons, Raging Bulls To Clash for 2.5 Super Senior 60s State Championship

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- No matter whether it's 4.5 Men's, 3.5 Women's or, in this case, 2.5 Men's, those bloody third-set match tiebreaks most always raise their ugly/pretty heads in USTA League advanced playoffs.

With HHI leagues fielding the only Super Senior 60s Men's 2.5 teams, it did seem to make sense to hold the USTA League South Carolina State Championships here. The rest of the divisions will be battling next weekend on Seabrook Island.

The Sea Pines Falcons, first-place finisher in the regular season, defeated the Dataw Dyna-Sores 2-1 and the Moss Creek Raging Bulls won 2-1 over the Country Club of Hilton Head Court Jesters this week. That set the stage for the the state championship Tuesday between the Falcons and the Bulls.

Being a state championship series meant that, instead of playing out the third set, a 10-point match tiebreak was played. And you really don't have to ask how each of the two team wins were decided, do you?

Meanwhile, the search continues throughout South Carolina, the rest of the South and even the country to find 2.5 players. Right now they all must be in the HHI area or they just quit playing. Here we know that, 2.5 or 4.5, it's just FUN.

Fall Adult Team Tennis Under Way with Record Numbers of Players, Teams

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (from the Chaplin Chatter) -- The Fall Adult Team Tennis Season is set for its second weekend with a record number of participants registered for play. With 118 players already signed for the eight teams, the number is expected to grow over the following weeks as teams try to add enough players to field the 5.5, 6.0, 6.5 and 7.0 combined mixed doubles levels. Last year's Fall Team Tennis attracted 71 players on five teams.

The increased participation this season has tremendously helped Public Tennis Inc.'s fundraising efforts. After court fee and ball expenses, more than $3,000 will have been raised to assist funding ongoing court-building efforts at Chaplin Public Tennis Center and the Bluffton Bobcat Public Tennis Center.

Expanded Junior Team Tennis League Set to Begin with Record Numbers of Players, Teams

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- As teams start practices, mid-November will see the first matches of an

expanded Junior Team Tennis season. In its fourth season, JTT , a USTA product, has seen growth every year, but this year participation has skyrocketed from 5 to 16 teams plus additional league sponsorships.

Three new divisions have been added; 14 and Under Beginner, Intermediate, and 12 and Under Beginner which join with the previous 18 and Unders. Combined, that could bring 200 youth into program.

League Coordinator and Coach Robert Brown credited the addition of new quality coaches (PTR President Dan Santorum, Beaufort Academy's Gregg Crosby, Beaufort's Floyd Johnson and David Reidmayer) to go along with Wexford's Patrick Mason, Chaplin Park's Tim Austin, HHI teaching pro and player Scott Nichols with bringing needed attention as well as big numbers to the program.

The Bluffton Badkatz, now with three teams, has added Boys' Assistant and Armstrong Atlantic standout Kristen Kelly, joining Brown to work with the 14s. The league has added sponsors Weichert Realty (Nichols) and Players World of Sports, which will assist with uniforms, prizes and a year-ending banquet.

Between Nov. 17 and Jan. 16 about 50 matches will be played with all divisions except the beginners vying for a shot at the State Championship in July in Sumter. Last July, Nichols' "Villains" and Bluffton Badkatz represented our area at those championships.

For information on the league and its format, match schedules and more, go to http://www.sctennis.com and select "Junior Team Tennis" or contact Brown at 290-2833.
