Alley Cats Take Two Breakers for First-Round Win in Mobile

MOBILE AL (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- Winning a pair of third-set match tiebreaks is worthwhile any time. Winning them in the opening round of the Southern Section Championships is almost priceless. Almost. In the finals, that would be priceless, but today the Adult 2.5 Women's Bluffton HS Alley Cats took the first step in a 2-1 victory over the Louisiana Lafayette Margarita Mommas.

The Alley Cats didn't make it easy on themselves, losing the first set on all three courts. However, Aimee Stephens and Captain Dianne Austin took the second set at #1 doubles 6-2 and ran through the super tiebreak for the win. Meanwhile, Iris Petrillo and Allison Caggiano, down from a 4-6 first set, recovered for a 6-4 second, then won the match tiebreak. (Of course it was much more exciting than that, but USTA/TennisLink refuses to set it up so tiebreak scores can be posted in league play.)

The Alley Cats will be back on court early tomorrow against Kentucky/Louisville Blairwood.

The Bluffton team is one of three from Hilton Head Island leagues competing at Southerns. Senior 3.5 Men's Indigo Run Golden Bear Claws, captained by Don Ross, will not begin play until Thursday. The 5.0 Hilton Head Islanders, captained by Mike O'Regan, will start Friday.

Super Senior Numbers Are Up as First SPLIT Season Approaches

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The growth in tennis in the Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, Beaufort area was the base rationale for separating the on-island and off-island USTA Leagues beginning this fall. Guess what: Senior tennis is continuing its growth spurt.

The first compilation of teams for the Tennis Association of HHI and Coastal Carolina Tennis Association shows a significant increase over the previous year, continuing the trend since start of the league program. In Super Senior 60s alone, the number of teams have jumped from 63 in '07 to 71 as of current totals. Compile the men's and women's 60s, 70s and 75s of the two districts and it comes to 100 teams. Last year's total was 86.

The fall season is Step One of the new format. Not all rating divisions will be split this season. The transition will continue in early 2009 with the Adult and Senior Spring Leagues, then progress into Mixed Doubles and Combo.

Monday the 13th was deadline for pre-registration of teams -- TAHHI and CCTA. Here is the way the teams stack up in the split divisions by our current court of Super Seniors:
