$2,050 Final Take on PTI Fundraiser for US Open Tickets
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News via Tim Ryan/Chaplin Chatter) -- A grand total of $2,050 was raised by Public Tennis Inc. in its US Open ticket promotion that ended with drawings and a silent auction Saturday.
The silent auction winner was Bob Coleman of Hilton Head Island. He is a longtime volunteer at the Professional Tennis Registry's Wheelchair Tennis Tournament and Special Olympics events. He has always dreamed of taking his Dad to the US Open. The PTR made the highest silent auction bid of $250 and give Coleman the courtside tickets for his volunteerism.
Marty Gleason of Hilton Head Island won the grand prize set of tickets to the USTA President's Box. Jaime Kaplan, a tennis pro from Macon GA and a former Wimbledon player, was the winner of the set of courtside seats. Kaplan was a "classmate" of HHI's Patricia Hy-Boulais at Nick Bolletieri Tennis Academy "in our youth" (Patricia's quote). See attached story by Kaplan of Wimbledon special days.
The auction bid along with the raffle tickets that were sold have given PTI a total of $2050 in funds that will be used towards reaching the 2008 goal of $7,500 for the new court fund.
Assurance From Packet Sports:
'Do Not Panic. Everything Is Fine'
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- "Yes, my column was every two weeks, and I know what you're thinking ... But you shouldn't be thinking it." That's from Island Packet's Justin Jarrett, now ex-tennis columnist, on our noting that new tennis guy Sam McDowell's tennis column will be every THREE weeks.
"Sam's column will be every three weeks," Justin emailed, "but he's also going to have a tennis-related blog on islandpacket.com that will be updated between columns, and we plan to try to do more features and enterprise stories from the local tennis scene.
"In the long run, I think there will be more local tennis coverage, despite the column running less frequently.
"Do not panic. Everything is fine."
Jarrett, shifting to other IPack sports duties, will continue his volunteer www.tennisenews.blogspot.com service where you can access current and back TENNIS E-News issues.
If you are at a tennis event and see a very young-looking guy with a notepad, that's probably Sam McDowell. He's our new official tennis guy. Say hello.
