3 Sets of Tickets

JULY 5TH DRAWINGS for US Open Tickets in President's Box & Courtside

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Three sets of tickets for a day during the US Open's first week will be up for grabs in Saturday's drawings and silent auction at Chaplin Public Tennis Center. Seats are for the USTA President's Box and courtside and are part of a Public Tennis, Inc., court-building fund benefit.

Silent auction bidding for one of the sets of tickets is at $250. Two other sets of tickets, with a minimum $25 tax deductible donation, are available. Both of the latter will be awarded at a special Round Robin Social Saturday at Chaplin. A cookout sponsored by Custom Water Solutions and Public Tennis Inc. will get started at 5 p.m. Besides the drawing for the US Open tickets the event will also include a 50/50 raffle with door prizes also being awarded.

Tickets are now available at Players World of Sports in the Shoppes on the Parkway and PTR's International Headquarters at the Van der Meer Shipyard Tennis Center. Checks made payable to People For Parks.

Deadline Extended for Adult, Senior Men's Combo + Sr. Women's 6.5s

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The deadline to register teams for Adult and Senior Men's combo has been extended by Coordinator Kathy Foulke. Also, time has been extended for 6.5 Senior Women.

"I know you are out there!!!" Foulke said in reporting numbers for the upcoming season that will begin in August. More teams are especially wanted in divisions that have only one or two teams. To register or to get on a combo team, contact Foulke at kathyfoulke@netscape.net.

Bring Out the Kids & Grandkids

Kid Zone Tennis Tournament July 13 for Under 8s and Under 12s -- Signup Deadline Sunday

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Parents and grandparents, get the kids off the sofa and onto the tennis court Sunday the 13th for the island's first Quickstart Tennis Tournament for boys and girls in 8 & Under and 12 & Under categories. Special balls and shorter courts will be used in the competition aimed at beginning youngsters.

Conducted by Wimbledon recordholder* Patricia Hy-Boulais and Yves Boulais, the all-day event will feature the Under 8 on a 36-foot court with foam balls. Registration fee $15. Under 12s will play on a 60-foot court with low compression balls. Registration fee $25. Registration deadline is Sunday the 6th. Youngsters will receive a T-shirt, lunch and a minimum of two matches.

All proceeds from the one-day event will go to Public Tennis, Inc. and Island Recreation Center.

*Patricia Hy and Chanda Rubin hold the Wimbledon record for most games played in a women's match -- a 1995 thriller that went 7-6, 6-7, 17-15 over almost four hours to Rubin.

160 Players in Program

Junior Team Tennis Champions Decided; Next Up Is State Championships

BLUFFTON SC (TENNIS E-News) -- USTA Junior Team Tennis has wrapped up its most successful season in the area with 160 players and the Bluffton Badkatz atop the 18 & Under and 14 & Under final standings. Next up will be the South Carolina championships in Sumter.

Local League Coordinator Robert Brown reports that 14 teams competed in four age graded divisions. Finalists will be guests at a season-ending banquet later this month, then on to the state championships and a chance to advance to a national title. Last year a South Carolina 18 & Under Intermediate team won Nationals.

This summer season winners will be joined in Sumter by the previous season winners: Racquet Club Villains – 18s and 14s and Coach Dan Santorum's 12 & Unders, totaling 6 local teams (about 60 juniors) trying to advance to a Sectional Championship. Sportsmanship Awards for one boy and one girl from each division will be awarded on July 12 as will a travel stipend for the teams advancing.

The league was administered by Public Tennis Inc. and sponsored by Players World of Sports and Weichert Realty – Scott Nichols. Junior Team Tennis is a USTA league format which allows kids to compete as a team in singles, doubles and mixed doubles at all levels. The next season will be November through January 2009.
