$2,000 Raised for Court Project

US Open Seats Go to Islander & Former Wimbledon Player

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Marty Gleason of HHI will be sitting in the USTA President's Box; Jaime Kaplan of Macon GA and a late '80s Wimbledon performer, will be seated courtside at the US Open. They are winners of drawings Saturday evening at Chaplin Public Tennis Center's special July 4th weekend round robin.

With odds about 100,000 to 1 better than Publishers' Clearing House, the winning tickets were drawn by a member of the TENNIS E-News staff from a total 72 tickets sold @$25 each to benefit the Public Tennis Inc. court-building fund.

About 40 players took part in the round robin, drawings and picnic spread under threatening skies. King and Queen of the courts were Heather Galvin and Brian Casey for the round robin. A silent auction for a third set of tickets will be completed this week and will bring the total funds raised to more than $2,000.

Neither of the US Open seat winners was present for the drawing. Gleason is an active local league and tournament player. Kaplan played Wimbledon and reached the Round of 16 in Mixed Doubles in the late '80s. She bought her fund-raising ticket from PTI President John Parente, a roundrobin sponsor who lived in Macon several years and maintains contacts there.

Round robin coordinator and PTI Vice President Tim Ryan and Julie Jilly of the Professional Tennis Registry conducted the social and its related activities.
