Inaugural Season Closes

Shipyard, Sea Pines To Meet for 3.0 Super Senior 75s Championship Wednesday

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The inaugural season of the USTA League Super Senior 75s will conclude with the Men's 3.0 championship match Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Port Royal Racquet Club. Read that: Nation's first USTA League Super Senior 75s season -- to our knowledge.

On Monday, the Shipyard Beach Boys defeated the Sun City Spoilers 2-1 and Sea Pines CC took all three courts from the Wexford Juvenilities, with the winners advancing to Wednesday's championship match.

Spectators will be admitted free. Local League Senior Men's Coordinator Don Grider, a co-creator of the original Super Seniors back in the last century, is anticipating an expanded season next year, with advanced playoffs with other South Carolina local league teams.

Sole HHI Team in Finals Loses 2-1

Spanish Wells Women 5.5 Finalist at SC Combo States Championships

DANIEL ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- Hilton Head Island's Spanish Wells Combo needed just one third-set match tiebreak Monday in the USTA League South Carolina Combo State Championships. Not to be.

The Wellsians, captained by Bethanne Carroll, went 3-0 in group play, then took a 2-1 semifinal win, but couldn't pull out that final match against Lowcountry's Pine Forest Azalea Chicks, losing 2-1.

Spanish Wells finished better than any of the nine other HHI league teams competing among 158 teams at Family Circle Tennis Center. How the other HHI teams finished is listed by category below. If for nothing else, check out the creative names of the combo teams.

As a side note on the competitiveness of the Combo weekend, HHI's Wexford Ladies of the Net (Arlene Fader, captain) went 0-4 in Super Senior 6.5 team matches. All four matches were lost 2-1. In at least two of the playing categories in which straight round robins were played, the championship came down to same team record, same won/loss record, same number of sets lost and championship decided by the winner having two fewer games lost than the #2 finisher.

Semifinal: Spanish Wells Combo 2, PD/Oakdale CC 1

#1 -- Lynne Button-Zachrich/Valerie Muehleman lost 6-0, 6-4

#2 -- Laura Reilley/Gena Kobleur won 6-4, 6-4

#3 -- Bethanne Carroll/Kimberly Caroline Boyce won 6-1, 7-5

Final: HHI/Spanish Wells Combo 1, LCTA #1/Pine Forest Azalea Chicks 2

#1 – Bethanne Carroll/Kimberly Boyce won 6-1, 6-2

#2 – Lynne Zachrich/Valerie Muehleman lost 6-4, 4-6, 1-0

#3 – Laura Reilley/Gena Kobleur lost 6-2, 6-2

Here is the rundown of their match results and the remainder of the Adult, Senior and Super Senior divisions, a few of which have not been finished because of the rain-induced schedule backup. HHI team records are also listed:
