Typically the return date of summer vacationers, that holiday being at its latest possible date may rob Super Senior schedulers of a week of play this year and rob team captains of players still out of the area. The Fall schedule always is much shorter than the Spring league season, sometimes necessitating two-a-week matches. Just a note to put on your bewares.

Mueller Outpowers Riske in Final at Head/Tail $10K
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Tower of power Alexandra Mueller won the Head/Tail USTA Women’s $10K at Van Der Meer Tennis Center today, but not before Alison Riske extended the top seed deep into the third set, only to fall 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
Ranked #292 in the world, the Philadelphia area native five years on the pro tour blasted her way to a 5-0 first set start against the recent Pittsburgh area high school graduate. Riske began picking up on the pace and outrallied Mueller to go up 4-1 in the second set. With no power to match on serve, Riske placed hers well and forced the top seed into rallies that often ended in a Mueller error – deep or into the net but NEVER soft.
Time and again, Mueller smacked a serve that brought her back from a rally she lost. In the middle of the second set, the 21-year-old served consecutive balls off the sideline, then center line for the game. Riske didn’t blink and started the next game to two straight serves off lines.
Riske’s serving consistency set up winners crosscourt and down the line as she won the second set 6-3. The serve, however, didn’t hold up in the third set. After Riske recovered from two double faults to hold for 2-all, she wasn’t able to repeat that after two double faults at 2-3. There was no letup in the groundstroke exchanges, but Mueller was able to maintain her serving power advantage through the final game.

South Carolina Holds Lead Going Into Southern Senior Cup Finals in Alabama
HUNTSVILLE AL (TENNIS E-NEWS VIA Internet) – South Carolina maintained the lead Saturday to defend its championship in the Southern Senior Cup, the nine-state competition in men’s and women’s age divisions 35, 45, 55, 65 and 75. Hilton Head Island and Bluffton seniors are playing key roles. The team event was to be completed today, but results were not posted by our deadline.
Here are results from Saturday matches. Teams play two singles and one doubles in each age division, with points awarded for every court won. The points accumulate for the overall championship.
In Women’s 45s consolation semifinal, HHI’s Nancy Szen defeated Kim Tatum 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 at #2 singles as South Carolina won 3-0 over Mississippi in that age division.
In the Women’s 55s SC 2-1 semifinal over Alabama, Donna McKenna of Bluffton lost to Laura Fuller 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 at #2 singles.
In Women’s 65s, SC defeated Alabama 3-0. HHI’s Ann Hunt won 6-0, 6-0 at #1 singles over Claire Magruder and Judy Levering won 6-0, 6-2 at #2 over Caffy Lithenhaus.
Georgia won 2-0 over SC in the Women’s 75s semifinal. HHI’s Gloria Henninger and Jeanette Weiland lost 7-5, 6-0 to C. McGuire/M. Park.
HHI’s Scott Nichols won in singles and doubles in SC’s 3-0 consolation win over Louisiana. He won 6-0, 6-0 over Rick Profitt at #2 singles, then teamed with Al Cannon to defeat D. Meyer/H. Gorman.
For the second day, Pat Child of HHI won singles and doubles, this time in SC’s 3-0 win over Louisiana. in Men’s 55s. He beat Steve Benton 7-6, 6-0 at #1 singles then teamed with Jim Hinson for a 6-1, 6-1 win over W. Campbell and M. McNulty.
In Men’s 75s semifinal, Alabama won 2-1 over SC. Bob Koenig of Bluffton and Joe Roberts won 6-4, 6-2 over .C. Johnson/B. Johnson, but Rich Lawson defeated Frank Meade of HHI 6-4, 6-2 at #1 singles.
