SC Yacht Ms. Fits Win 2.5 Adult State Chamionship in Greenville
GREENVILLE SC (TENNIS E-NEWS via TennisLink) – Tracy Castricone won her fourth singles match and the Groetzinger/Kemper team their fifth doubles of the long weekend and PRESTO! the SC Yacht Club Ms. Fits were South Carolina 2.5 Adult State Champions today. They will be climbing on the women’s-only bus to Southerns next month with the PDTC 4.5s of Hilton Head Island and the 4.0 Beaufort Sea Islanders, winners of States last month.
The Wexford Player Slayers, captained by Teri Rohan, had high hopes rolling into today’s 3.0 semifinals, but came up short in a 4-1 loss to Columbia Tennis League’s Spin of the Racket.
The Ms. Fits, captained by Lynda Halpern, went with what got them through three in-group wins Saturday and Sunday. Castricone did not lose a set in her four singles matches and also teamed with Vaiden Stubbs for a straight-set doubles win. Likewise, Kaitlen Jane Groetzinger and AnnMarie Kemper did not lose a set in five matches.
Picking up a championship and a semifinalist spot looks good on the books relative to the history of Hilton Head Island league teams in Adult States. The area teams often are salt-‘n’-peppers with senior players who are competitive locally but not so much in advanced competitions.
Here is how the other HHI and Coastal Carolina teams fared in Greenville:
Women’s 3.5 – HHITL/Indigo Run Slice, captained by Tracy Breinich, went 2-2; CCTA/Beaufort Red Hot Chili Peppers, captained by Cathy McGill, were 0-3
Men’s 3.5 – HHITL/Sea Pines CC The Old Guys, captained by Tim Duffy, were 1-2; CCTA/Beaufort Smashers, captained by Larry Wilson, were 0-3.
Men’s 3.0 – HHITL/Wexford Blaze of Glory, captained by James Sewell, went 0-3.
Adult States Footnotes
Two Columbia Tennis League #2 teams won championships, one defeating the CTL #1 team in the category.
Ace Kickers and Smart Aces were among the more popular nicknames of competing teams.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – With a busy schedule of wildcard and qualifying out of the way, the $10,000 Head/Tail USTA Women’s Championship moves into its main draw Tuesday, with singles matches beginning at 9 a.m. at Van Der Meer Tennis Center. Admission is free to spectators throughout.
Sixty women took part in this evening’s Luke Jensen clinic that was followed by a player party and doubles exhibition featuring local pros Tommy Shimada and Juliano Ciriambelli teaming with $10K players Nicola Slater of England and Ali Riske of Pittsburgh who trains on HHI. Of note, Riske had a 2007 US Open first round win over Sorana Cirstea, who today defeated French Open #1 seed Jelena Jankovic.
Saturday the 6th will be International Kids Day featuring a USTA Quick Start program at 11 a.m. A pizza party will be held following the women’s tournament singles semifinals and doubles final Saturday.
The main draw that begins Tuesday will play with singles in the morning and doubles in the afternoon.

Two years ago TENNIS E-News ran a well-received series of excerpts from "The Code, The Players' Guide for Unofficiated Matches". You have asked for a repeat? You got it.
May the server hit the serve just as the receiver looks up after getting into the ready position? No. The receiver is not ready until the receiver is in the ready position and has a second or two to make eye contact with the server.
*Note: TENNIS E-News is not making up these items. All are taken word-for-word from USTA's "The Code" that can be found in the "Friend at Court" handbook or as a stand-alone leaflet -- available by going to http://www.usta.com and selecting "USTA Shop" and then "Books" on that page.
