Loss to Mississippi 'B'

SL The Odd Couples Go 2-2, Finish 2nd in Group at Southern Mixed Doubles Championships

NEW ORLEANS LA (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- Hilton Head Island's SL The Odd Couples took a must-win on finals day of the USTA League Southern Mixed Doubles Championships, but got no help from other teams in its Senior 6.0 Group I. That left the Spring Lake team 2-2 in second place behind Mississippi's state runnerup Fernwood Country Club.

The Spring Lake team, captained by Pat Kenworthy, was again led by Larry and Paula Legrand, who turned in their fourth straight win of the weekend. Tom Larkin and Patty Diggs added a second court win in Sunday's match.

As things happen, the MS "B" team went 4-0 in topping The Odd Couples for Group I first place. Mississippi's state champion, playing in Group II, went 1-3. The MS Fernwood mixers fell 3-0 in the final to Kentucky''s Versailles Woodford Parks & Rec that won Group II.

HHI's Gilchrist, O'Koniewski, Carter Win Girls' Singles Titles in Sea Pines Junior Championships

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Three girls playing under the HHIsland banner won singles finals today in the Sea Pines Junior Championships at Sea Pines Racquet Club. Another HHI girl was runnerup; two more placed third and two won consolation finals. Best that the local boys could do was one fourth-place finish.

From among the Southeast's more than 200 top juniors, the strong showing by top-seeded Island junior girls ended with championships by Girls' 18s Nadja Gilchrist over (3) Whitney Kay of Alpharetta GA 6-3, 7-5; Girls' 16s Molly O'Koniewski over (1) Dylan Windom of Tifton GA 6-4, 2-6, 6-0, and Girls' 14s Hayley Carter over (3) Ashley Kitchen of Hilton Head Island 6-1, 6-2.

Islanders who lost in the semifinals but took #3/#4 playoff matches were (5) Bethany Dyar, who defeated Kendal Woodard of Stockbridge GA 6-4, 6-4 in Girls' 16s and (3) Ashleigh Antal, winner over (1) Elizabeth Klyachkin of Macon GA 6-1, 6-3 in Girls' 14s. HHI #3 seed Zachary Sprouse lost to John Schmitt of Raleigh NC d. 6-3, 6-1 in Boys' 18s.

In consolation finals, Jeri Reichel defeated Margaret Ann Boyette of Watkinsville GA 6-1, 2-6, 1-0(9) in Girls' 18s and Zeynep Mafa downed Haleigh Morgus of Cary NC 6-2, 6-1 in Girls' 14s.
