THE BANANA OPEN -- Sailing into the Finals Sunday

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News via Jackie Reynecke) -- Three-setters piled upon three-setters as The Banana Open slid through most of its quarterfinals and semifinals today at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center. Play will resume early Sunday and wrap up in the afternoon.

Two Weekends, Two Finals, Same Players: Cecil vs. Logar … This Time at Van der Meer

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News via VdM's Justyn Schelver) -- Last Sunday in the Palmetto Pro Open in Sumter, Mallory Cecil of Spartanburg went three sets to defeat her opponent Theresa Logar. It was the first pro circuit final for both players. Sunday at 10 a.m., the two will face off in the finals of the Kaelin/Diadora Championships at Van der Meer Tennis Center. Admission is free to spectators.

Cecil was last Sunday's match 3-6, 7-6(6), 6-4. She defeated Megan Moulton-Levy 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the final. Meanwhile, Logar won 6-2, 6-3 over Nicola Slater of Great Britain.

The Kaelin/Diadora doubles final today pitted two Hilton Head Island trainees, Nadia Gilchrist and Keri Wong, against each other. Gilchrist and Jennifer Elie defeated Won and Carolina Salge 6-1 0-6 [10-5] for the championship.

Islanders Continue Pacing South Carolina Senior Cup Team in Georgia

COLUMBUS GA (TENNIS E-News via STA's Marilyn Sherman) -- South Carolina men and women continued on their pace into the finals of the Southern Senior Cup, with crucial wins posted by Hilton Head Island and Bluffton players. Finals will be Sunday with overall championship and men's and women's champion teams to be determined.

HHI Juniors Advance to Semifinals in Palmetto Championships

BELTON SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Five Hilton Head Island junior girls today advanced to the singles semifinals of the Wachovia Palmetto Championships, the premier tournament for South Carolina players. Several others are advancing in doubles.

#1 seeds Molly O'Koniewski in Girls' 16s and Hayley Carter in Girls' 14s advanced, as did Michelle Green #2, Jeri Reichel #3 in Girls' 18s and unseeded Leyla Erkan in Girls' 16s.

O'Koniewski defeated #5 Meghan Blevans 6-2, 6-2. Carter beat #5 Katherine Lee 6-0, 6-1. Green won 6-1, 6-2 over Sally Bartelmo. Reichel went 7-5, 6-3 over #5 Amanda Malatek. Erkan won 7-6(3), 6-2 over #5 Carin Hallman.

Falling in the quarterfinals among HHI juniors were Zach Sprouse, #5 in Boys' 18s, losing to #4 Cal Hinsman; Nicholas Kunz #4 in Boys' 16s, losing to #4 Joel Cook; Connor Burke, co-#5 in Boys' 12s, losing to #3 Austin Heinz; Jared Woodson, co-#5 in Boys' 12s, lising to #2 Wood Benton; Amanda Schwarz, #5 in Girls' 18s, losing to #4 Alex Martin; Ashley Kitchen, #4 in Girls' 14s, losing to Meagan Evans; Brooks Busby, #5 in Girls' 14s, losing to #3 Ansley Speaks; and Natalie Kitchen, #5 in Girls' 12s, losing to #1 Ivey Welborn.
