Cecil, Wong, Gilchrist Advance at Kaelin/Diadora; Singles Semifinals Saturday 10 a.m.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Spartanburg's Mallory Cecil advanced to the singles semifinals and local trainees Keri Wong and Nadia Gilchrist are in the doubles final as opponents at the $10,000 Kaelin/Diadora Championships at Van der Meer Tennis Center.

Cecil, coming off her first pro circuit title in last week's Palmetto Pro Open in Sumter, defeated Nathalia Rossi of Brazil 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 today to advance to Saturday's 10 a.m. semifinals. Nicola Slater of Great Britain will meet the U.S.'s Theresa Logar in the other semi. Admission is free to spectators. ITF Supervisor Bunny Williams of Bluffton is directing the event.

Following the semis will be the doubles final, scheduled for noon, pitting two Heritage Academy graduates on opposite sides of the net. Clemson signee Keri Wong and Carolina Salge will face Georgia signee Nadja Gilchrist and Jennifer Elie. Wong trains at Van Der Meer and Gilchrist at Smith Stearns in Sea Pines.

About 50 local children, ages 4-12, took part in Van Der Meer Tennis Center first annual Quickstart Kid's Day at midday. Local pros focused on giving the youngsters skills that can be used to develop their game. The clinic highlighted the USTA's Quickstart program which uses adjusted nets, balls, and rackets and is designed to be easy for all ages.

HHI, Bluffton Players Put SC on Winning Side in Southern Senior Cup in Georgia

COLUMBUS GA (TENNIS E-News via STA's Marilyn Sherman) -- South Carolina, bolstered by key players from Hilton Head Island and Bluffton, leads after Day One in the nine-state Southern Senior Cup being played in men's and women's team competition on age levels of 35, 45, 55, 65 and 75.

Two singles and one doubles are played on each level in the team vs. team rounds. South Carolina compiled 21 team points today, with Georgia and North Carolina just behind with 19 each. The state teams are competing for men's and women's team titles and an overall combined championship.

HHI Junior Seeds on a Roll at Wachovia Palmetto Championships in Belton

BELTON SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Eleven of 12 Hilton Head Island juniors seeded at the Wachovia Palmetto Championships advanced through Rounds of 32 and 16 today and the 12^th lost to an unseeded HHI junior. Play will continue in all age divisions through the weekend.

Two HHI junior #1 seeds -- Molly O'Koniewski in Girls' 16s and Hayley Carter in Girls' 14s -- won Round of 32 and 16 matches. Also winning in the same rounds were Zach Sprouse, #5 in Boys' 18s, Nicholas Kunz #4 in Boys' 16s, Connor Burke #5 in Boys' 12s, Ashley Kitchen #4 and Brooks Busby #5 in Girls' 14s and Natalie Kitchen #5 in Girls' 12s.

Winning their Round of 16s matches and advancing to quarterfinals were HHI's Michelle Green #2, Jeri Reichel #3 and Amanda Schwarz #5 in Girls' 18s.
