Sun City Senior Doubles Gets Early Start on Long Weekend

BLUFFTON SC (TENNIS E-News) -- With 158 players in the draws, the Sun City Senior Doubles got a hot start Thursday, then rolled through a full schedule today of USTA-sanctioned doubles in age and rating divisions. Remaining quarterfinals and semifinals are set for Saturday, with finals to start Sunday morning.

Only the larger draws got a start Thursday. Here are those results:

HHI Juniors Win Girls', Boys' Sportsmanship Awards at Palmetto Championships

BELTON SC (TENNIS E-News via Rex Maynard) -- Jeri Reichel of Hilton Head Island was named the recipient of the Malloy Evans Memorial Sportsmanship Award (for the overall tournament) and HHI's Jack O'Koniewski was the recipient of the Matthew Strange Memorial Sportsmanship Award (for the Boys' 12s).

Reichel finished fourth in the Girls' 18s and was a finalist in doubles. O'Koniewski finished seventh in the Boys' 12s. Reichel is the second straight Hilton Head Island player to receive the Malloy Evans Award; Zachary Sprouse of last year's recipient. Hilton Head Island leads the way with 7 recipients in the 28-year (25%) history of the award. Other Hilton Head Island recipients are: 1981 (first year)-John Crenshaw; 1984-Brad Arberg; 1988-Trevor Brown; 1997-Trevor Smith; 2004-Lara Stephens.

Sprouse was the recipient of the $2,000 Dunlop Scholarship which is presented each year at the Palmetto. He will attend Presbyterian College this fall, where he will continue his tennis career. Sprouse finished seventh in the Boys' 18s singles and won the 18s doubles, his first Palmetto title.

Fund for Building Chaplin Courts

3 Sets of US Open Tickets Up for Draw by Public Tennis Inc.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News via Chaplin Chatter) -- Three sets of US Open tickets will be grand prizes in the annual US Open fundraiser conducted by Public Tennis Inc. that last year helped raise $3,775 for the new court fund at the Chaplin Public Tennis Center. (US Open dates: Aug. 25-Sept. 7)

The first part of the fundraiser will include a chance to win two different sets of US Open tickets. A minimum tax-deductible donation of $25 will get a chance to win one first-place prize -- a set of courtside seats valid for the second, third or fourth day of play. These tickets have a retail value of $950.

The grand prize consists of two tickets in the Presidents Box during the same time frame. The winner will be able to choose either a morning or evening session at the event. Tickets will also entitle the winner to either lunch or dinner in the President's Suite.

Tickets are now available at Players World of Sports in Fresh Market Shoppes and PTR's International Headquarters at the Van Der Meer Shipyard Tennis Center. They will also be available at team practices and Sunday Round Robin Socials at Chaplin Park. Checks made payable to People For Parks can also be mailed to: PTI c/o PO Box 4739, Hilton Head Island SC 29938. New this year is the option of calling into PTR at 785-7244 and paying by credit card (MC,VISA,AMEX).

The winning tickets will be drawn on July 5 during a special Round Robin at the Chaplin PTC. The event, sponsored by Custom Water Solutions, will include a free cookout, a 50/50 raffle as well as tennis.

US Open Tickets: Silent Auction

A third set of US Open Tickets will be made available through a silent auction. The two tickets also are courtside seats with a retail value of $950 that will be valid for either the second, third or fourth day of the tournament. "Serious bids" will be accepted by emailing your name, bid amount, address, and phone number to chaplinroundrobin@hotmail.com This donation is tax deductible and will also be used to help pay off PTI's annual obligation of $7,500 for the two new courts at Chaplin.

The deadline to submit a bid will be July 4 with the winner being announced at the July 5 round robin event. High-bid amounts will be posted weekly.
