"Can't you guys do any better than show us taped tennis matches? What's wrong with broadcasting live tennis? If the players are alive, you should bring us live matches."

First Season of ‘The Split’

Yep. It's That Time Already: Signup Starts Monday for Super Seniors 60s, 70s

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The USTA League Super Senior Men's and Women's 60s and 70s will be open for pre-registration on Monday for Hilton Head Island and Moss Creek teams. Forms will go out to captains, with completion deadline of July 13.

The late summer/fall season will be the first of “The Split” that has created the Coastal Carolina Tennis Association for league play ‘cross the bridge, except for Moss Creek. Some rating levels will remain combined because there are not enough teams for a split. Whether Tennis Association of HHI or CCTA coordinates those levels has yet to be determined.

Don Grider is coordinating Men's 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0, as well as the 75s 3.0 and 3.5 league. Mary Ellen Arboe is coordinating Women's 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0, as well as the 75s, and 2.5 men.

If you want to play for a Super Senior team or are a captain forming a team and need a pre-registration form or additional information, contact Grider at dmgrider@roadrunner.com or Arboe at tennisbeachbums@aol.com

Super Senior season will begin in late summer – early September for most teams and possibly late August for larger rating divisions.

TENNIS E-News was started more than seven years ago because of disgruntlement over The Island Packet's lack of tennis coverage, inconsistency and errors if covered. TIPacket's Sam McDowell did a nice story and interview on the Kaelin/Diadora Championships at Van Der Meer. Now if TIPacket is cited by us for a good job and TENNIS E-News screws up, does that mean it's time for TENNIS E-News to fold its laptop?

Maybe we all just need a rest after that one -- the computer included.

1. We did a major screwup … and even bragged about our cleverness.*

2. The computer fought, objected and didn't send out half the issues until 3:15 a.m. Monday.

*That great-appearing lead about Mallory Cecil and Rafael Nadal having something in common -- like winning the final set of a championship 6-0. Cecil's final set actually was 6-2. Yes, we were there. Maybe it's time for the hearing aid.

READER REQUEST

Q: We are going into the summer heat and we are all playing a lot and drinking a lot. What exactly are the rules, either USTA or tournament, on going to the bathroom? And are the rules different from USTA and/or a tournament?

From USTA's Friend at Court -- Rule 29 Continuous Play

c. … A limited number of toilet/change of attire breaks may … be allowed, if this is announced in advance of the event.

Under “USTA Comment” accompanying the above rule: “No limit (on toilet/change of attire breaks) but official must decide that need is genuine and not because of general fatigue. Play continues if request is not granted. The player has a reasonable amount of time for the break.”

"(That ruling) allows one or more “genuine” toilet or change of attire breaks. When possible, these breaks should be taken during a set break. If this is not possible, then the break should be taken at an odd game changeover. Breaks taken at other times should be limited to true emergencies. (The ruling) does not allow a tournament to limit the number of breaks. Gastrointestinal problems are medical conditions that are governed by Medical Time-Out provisions and not by Toilet Break provision.
