USTA League Standings
Ms. Fits, Blaze, Slice Take Aim on States with Key Wins
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) – The way it’s s’posed to be: Down to the wire weekend matches broke first-place ties as USTA League teams set the lineup for upcoming South Carolina State Championships in Charleston and Greenville.
The SC Yacht Ms. Fits proved how important that third court is when #3 doubles Cara Py and Andrea Messier won 7-5 in the third set to clinch a 2-1 win over the Spanish Wells Love Means Nothing and thus the championship spot in the Adult Women’s 2.5s.
In Adult Men’s 3.0, Wexford Blaze of Glory used a 4-1 win to squeeze past Chaplin Park Rattlers for that division championship. The Rattlers were upset by the SC Yacht Working Stiffs and, although tied 6-3 with Wexford, ended up second by virtue of courts won/loss.
Tied 11-0 in Adult Women’s 3.5, Indigo Run Indigo Slice settled the score with a Long Cove Covettes 4-1 to take over first place.
Bring on the States!!!

Two years ago TENNIS E-News ran a well-received series of excerpts from "The Code, The Players' Guide for Unofficiated Matches". You have asked for a repeat? You got it.
Repeating by request from 1/30/09 E-News: HINDRANCE ISSUES: Talking during a point. A player shall not talk while the ball is moving toward the opponent's side of the court. If the player's talking interferes with an opponent's ability to play the ball, the player loses the point. Consider the situation where a player hits a weak lob and loudly yells at his or her partner to get back. If the shout is loud enough to distract an opponent, then the opponent may claim the point based on a deliberate hindrance. If the opponent chooses to hit the lob and misses it, the opponent loses the point because the opponent did not make a timely claim of hindrance.
*Note: TENNIS E-News is not making up these items. All are taken word-for-word from USTA's "The Code" that can be found in the "Friend at Court" handbook or as a stand-alone leaflet -- available by going to http://www.usta.com and selecting "USTA Shop" and then "Books" on that page.
